How To Get More Reviews on Etsy

Reviews can make a big difference on Etsy. They help shoppers feel more confident about buying from your shop, especially when they’re looking for something handmade, personalized, or meant as a thoughtful gift.

Positive reviews build trust, support your shop’s reputation, and help you reach your Star Seller goals. But as an Etsy seller, getting more reviews isn’t about chasing customers and pressuring them to buy. It’s about making the whole experience easy and enjoyable, from the moment someone discovers your listing to the excitement of receiving their order.

In this blog post, we’ll look at simple, policy-safe ways to get more reviews on Etsy. We’ll discuss how to improve your listings, how to politely ask for reviews (without begging), and how to handle negative feedback when things don’t go to plan.

Why Etsy Reviews Are Important

Reviews help potential customers feel safer buying from your Etsy shop. When they see that others were happy with your shop’s customer service, they feel more confident placing an order.

They can also support your Star Seller goals. Your shop’s average rating (from customers’ reviews) is an important criterion for this program. To meet the review requirement, you need a rating of 4.8 or higher over the last 3 months. So, while one lower rating usually isn’t a problem, steady positive feedback makes it easier to keep a strong average. Every shop has a star rating average. This is calculated using all reviews that a shop has received, with newer reviews carrying more weight.

Reviews are useful for you as well. They show what buyers love, what questions keep coming up, and where your listings, photos, packaging, or customer service may need improvement.

💡 TIP: You don’t need perfection to earn good reviews. Focus on clear, concisely worded listings, reliable shipping, honest communication, and a product that matches buyers’ expectations.

How AI Highlights Etsy Review Details

Etsy uses AI to help shoppers assess product reviews. In this Seller Handbook article, Etsy explains that “Buyers can now see quick, AI-powered highlights from your reviews – making it easier for them to spot what others loved about your item, decide faster, and feel confident in their purchase.” These highlights point to common things customers mention in real reviews, like “fast shipping,” “gift-worthy,” or “very well made.”

For Etsy sellers, this is one more reason reviews are important. When customers talk about things like quality, packaging, shipping, or how perfect the item was as a gift, it helps future shoppers see why your product stands out. External AI sites such as ChatGPT also use Etsy reviews when suggesting products to shoppers, making positive, detailed reviews an asset to your business.

Set Clear Expectations Before the Sale

Many 5-star reviews start before the order is even placed. When buyers know exactly what they’re getting, there’s less room for confusion or disappointment.

Make sure that your listings include:

  • Photos that answer questions: Show the product from different angles, with close-ups for texture and simple props for size and scale. If you sell vintage items, include photos of any flaws so buyers know exactly what to expect. You can also add up to two videos to highlight details that photos may not show clearly. Check out this eRank blog post for more ideas. For digital sellers, consider adding a how-to-download graphic that shows buyers how they can access their purchase.
  • Accurate descriptions: Use your description to answer questions buyers may have before ordering. Include measurements, materials, care instructions, personalization details, and clear notes about what is or isn’t included. This eRank blog post has more advice on writing descriptions.
  • Simple variations: Use clear labels for options like color, size, finish, or hardware, and link photos to variations where possible.
  • Realistic shipping times: Avoid over-promising. Shipping on time, or earlier than expected, can make a big difference.

It’s also worth checking your policies and FAQs. Buyers may not always read everything, but clear information about how your business handles exchanges, custom items, delivery timeframes, etc., can help set expectations before there’s a problem.

How To Ask for Reviews on Etsy

Deliver excellent customer service by responding to messages quickly, sharing helpful updates, and providing clear care instructions for your products. When customers feel supported and valued, asking for a review feels like a genuine thank you instead of pressure.

If you decide to ask for a review, keep it simple and only ask once. A short follow-up a few days after delivery gives the buyer time to open the parcel, try the item, or download their file. Etsy already sends reminders asking buyers to leave reviews, so make sure your message is friendly, polite, and low-pressure.

How To Encourage Reviews Naturally

  • Ship orders on time: Give yourself enough time to properly make, pack, and send each order. If something unexpected causes a delay, let the buyer know with a quick, personal message before they reach out to you.
  • Add a special touch to each order: You don’t need fancy packaging to earn a great review. Packing the order neatly, including a simple card, or adding a small, thoughtful gift can make the experience feel more personal.
  • Include a personal thank you note: A short handwritten message with the buyer’s first name feels genuine. You can also add a gentle reminder that they can leave a review on Etsy from their “Purchases” page or through the “Reviews” tab.
  • Highlight the invoice note: If you include a printed invoice, highlight Etsy’s review reminder at the bottom. This helps buyers know exactly where to leave a review.
  • Make digital orders easy to use: If you sell downloads, include clear instructions so buyers know how to access, print, and use their files.
  • Solve issues quickly: Buyers can edit reviews for 100 days, so offering kind and helpful support can sometimes turn a disappointing experience into a good one. Remember, once you reply publicly, the review is locked, and the buyer can’t edit it anymore.

💡 TIP: Once an order has been shipped, check the tracking from time to time so you can spot possible delays early, especially during busy seasons or bad weather. In these situations, giving your customers a simple heads-up can prevent frustration and help keep your reviews positive.

What Not To Do When Asking for Reviews

  • Don’t offer discounts, coupons, refunds, gifts, or extras in exchange for a positive review. That’s called “shilling,” and it’s not allowed on Etsy.
  • Avoid sending buyers too many messages. Multiple reminders can feel spammy, and Etsy already sends reminders. One well-timed message is enough.

If you’re not sure, ask yourself: “Would this message feel helpful if I were the buyer?” If the answer is yes, go ahead and send it. If it feels pushy, don’t send it.

What To Do When Reviews Go Wrong

Getting a negative review on Etsy can hurt, and it’s normal to feel upset or defensive at first. Take a moment to breathe and avoid replying in public right away.

Start by checking if the review breaks Etsy’s Seller Policy. Etsy can remove reviews that include harassment, threats, private information, spam, fake reviews, or complaints about things you can’t control, such as problems with the shipping carrier (when mentioned by name).

If the review follows Etsy’s rules, consider sending the buyer a private message. Stay calm, polite, and clear. Ask what happened, apologize if needed, and offer a solution like a replacement, refund, repair, extra instructions, or an explanation. Many buyers just want to know you’re listening. If you solve the problem, they might update their review.

If you can’t fix the issue, use it as a learning experience. Figure out what went wrong and update your listings, photos, or policies to help prevent it in the future. Mistakes happen to every seller. Treat each one as a chance to learn and keep moving forward. It doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It’s feedback you can use to make the next order better.

If you choose to reply to the review, keep your message brief and professional. Remember, once you respond, the buyer won’t be able to edit their review anymore. Use this opportunity to show potential buyers how you handle situations and resolve the issue. For more advice, read our guide on how to respond to negative reviews on Etsy.

Keep It Simple and Let the Reviews Come

Getting reviews on Etsy usually comes from doing the basics well: clear listings, realistic shipping times, thoughtful packaging, and quick, helpful communication when buyers need support. Encourage customers to leave reviews gently and genuinely, with one follow-up message or a handwritten note in their package.

Some buyers won’t leave a review, even when they loved their order. That’s normal, and it’s part of doing business. Focus on what you can control, and make small changes when you notice the same questions or issues coming up.

Over time, using your customers’ feedback to fine-tune your shop’s customer service can help buyers feel more confident, lead to better reviews, and make your shop stronger. eRank can help you spot what needs attention, improve your listings, and keep building a shop buyers feel confident buying from.
