IMPORTANT: Universal Analytics stopped working at the end of June 2023. At this time, it looks almost certain that Etsy will not support GA4 and that you will no longer be able to independently verify your shop stats with Google Analytics.

Google Analytics is a highly useful tool that can provide you with valuable insights into your Etsy shop. However, there are so many options it’s easy to get lost. So join us as we walk you through our top four favorite Google Analytics Reports.

It’s not too late to save your Google Analytics data. Learn how to Connect Google Analytics to eRank.

1. Realtime reports

What it is was: This handy report shows you who is visiting your shop in realtime as they shop. If you were in a retail shop then you could just look around the store and see who is shopping. This is the digital version of that.

How to get there: Realtime > Overview

You should see something like this:

Realtime Reports in Google Analytics

It will show you interesting stats like:

  • How many people are looking at your listings right now
  • How many people have visited your shop in the past 30 minutes
  • What listings people are looking at
  • Where the people are located

2. Site Search reports

What it is: This is an amazing report because it can tell you what keywords people are using to find your listings. It also shows how many visits are coming from means other than search such as direct traffic or from similar items.

How to get there: Behavior > Site Search > Overview

You will see something like this:

This report will show you the most popular keywords buyers use to find your listings. You can pick any date range as far back as the day you installed Google Analytics in your shop. This will help you determine which keywords were bringing you visitors at different times of the year such as the changing seasons or holidays.

3. Site Content reports (overview)

What it is: This is a very powerful report in Google Analytics because it will tell you what keywords people use to find specific listings in your shop.

How to get there: Behavior > Site Content > All Pages

You will see something like this:

Google Analytics Site Content reports

By adding Search Term as a secondary dimension, you can see how many times people looked at each of your listings and what search terms they used.

The real power here is that you can find out what keywords worked best for your listings at different times of the year. For instance, if you are getting ready for Mother’s Day for 2022, modify the date range to include 9 April 2021 to 9 May 2021. You will get a good idea of what keywords worked well last year, and you can apply these to any new Mother’s Day listings you are creating for this year.

4. Content Drilldown reports for Your Listings

What it is: This is (in our opinion) the most powerful report in Google Analytics for Etsy sellers because it tells you what keywords people used to find a specific listing.

How to get there: Behavior > Site Content > Content Drilldown

You will see something like this:

Google Analytics Content Drilldown Etsy listings summary

From this screen, click on any of your Etsy listing IDs to see it’s drilldown report.

A typical drilldown report for one of your listings will look like this:

Google Analytics Content Drilldown report page level view

Things to look at in this report are:

(a) The Search Term (click on secondary dimension and add search term)

(b) How many pageviews each search term generated

(c) The average time people looked at your listing

Good keywords will generate lots of pageviews and a high Avg. Time on Page value. Bad keywords will have a very low Avg. Time on Page value.

The two big reasons why we love this report:

1. It gives you great keyword ideas for new listings

2. If you messed up your keywords during a crazy SEO experiment, you can look back at what keywords worked in the past, and add them back to your titles and tags.
