G’day, Australians! You win for most climbers in January: 14! And for the fourth month in a row, three are screamers. (So-called because they scream to the top seemingly out of nowhere. Just a month back, these didn’t even crack the Top 1000.) Haha, the UK had seven screamers this month.

These Top 20 searches climbed highest fastest

Here are all 14 in order by current rank, their former rank (if any) last.

#1 stickers, up from #21

#3 gift for him, up from #23

#4 personalized decor gift (screamer: didn’t make December’s Top 1000)

#5 wall decor, up from #28

#6 mushroom (screamer)

#8 home decor, up from #51

#9 rug, up from #412

#10 valentines gift for him (screamer)

#13 sword, up from #97

#14 wedding invitation, up from #322

#15 ring, up from #25

#18 rings, up from #89

#19 fidget, up from #206

#20 vintage, up from #108

All three of the other Etsy countries we cover here have these same two screamers.

  • personalized decor gift
  • valentines gift for him

So, let’s take a quick look at these first.

“Personalized decor gift” is an all-round dud.

Here are your stats.

By mid-month, all keyword search counts and rankings get confirmed; some ranks may change a bit but not by much.

For all four countries, it’s the same. Same single-month spike; same low Average Searches; same low Average CTRs. So, given those stats, it’s mystifying why everyone has the same high Competition. We gave them the same advice we’ll give you: skip this one. The game is not worth the candle.

And as for “valentines gift for him”? This one appears this time every year, and no mere mortal is going to rank for it. So, let’s skip that one, and any others lacking in opportunity or interest. Because we’re itching to get a look at your fun ones! And after those, we’ll do your insider Monthly CTR Roundup, see what it can tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy Australia now.

Ranked 6th: mushroom

Your third screamer, and you’re the only ones to have it.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “mushroom.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. We’re a bit baffled. The only mushroom search you had in December’s Top 1000 was #269 “magic mushrooms spores.” Google informs us that selling those is very much illegal in Australia. (And prohibited by Etsy to boot.)

That search vanished in January and now you have “mushroom,” ranking way, way higher. And check out that Average CTR: 143%! Wildly high! Calculated for the month, mushroom’s also got the second-highest CTR in your Top 20: 149%! Something’s up.

So we did a little digging: mushroom made your Top 1000 back in July at #132. It even made your November Top 1000 – the year’s most competitive – at #130. Next, we did an incognito search on Etsy Australia.

Loads of adorable stuff! So many that Etsy suggests narrowing down our search to Home Decor, Lighting, Furniture, Bedding or Outdoor & Gardening. Looks like all things mushroom are just trending now in Australia. As they have been in the US, UK, and CA off and on in recent years. Yours is just the first mushroom search we’ve seen make a Top 20. So if you’re interested, add it to a Keyword List; see where it goes from here.

Ranked 9th: rug, up from #412

Rug is back!

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “rug.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert banner indicates it’s popular with your shoppers this week (through February 10, 2025).

We remember when this keyword first appeared in your Top 20 a few years back. It surprised us; we thought Australia’s high shipping would discourage people from buying rugs online. But soon after, we saw “furniture” start climbing in Australia and in Canada too, also notorious for high shipping. Could the same reason shipping costs are high be why these get purchased online? In the less-settled vastnesses of Australia and Canada, local selection must be limited. People in remote areas who want something special may have to find it online.

Whatever the case, as you can see above right, rug’s 15-month performance is irregular. And while it’s got a respectable 103% Average CTR, its monthly CTR for January is just 71%. Low for Etsy. (That said, back in December when it only ranked #412, rug’s CTR for the month was a stellar 144%!) So, overall, we’d say this product is worth researching.

Ranked 13th: sword, up from #97

How popular is cosplay Down Under? Because we know it’s huge in the US, and lots of the gear for it comes from Etsy.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “sword.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Etsy shoppers in Australia over the past 15 months.

We routinely see anime, game, and fantasy sword searches when we’re reviewing our Etsy Category Top 100 lists. So, while this is the first time “sword” has made any country’s Top 20, we’ll assume it’s for cosplay. Have fun!

Ranked 14th: wedding invitation, up from #322

After “rug,” this climber covered the most ground in one month to reach the Top 20.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “wedding invitation.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert indicates it’s popular with your shoppers this week (through February 10, 2025).

What we love best here is that in 15 months, wedding invitation’s search volume hasn’t dropped below 1,200/mo. (And if we tick the option to include near matches, searches haven’t dropped below 2,450!) Just about tied for our affections is wedding invitation’s Average CTR: 106%. Plenty of purchase intent!

Are you new to selling online? On ecommerce sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs can be an indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one who’s still just browsing).

If you’re looking for what to sell on Etsy, this product shows promise. Competition for the broad term is moderate, so you’ll probably need to niche down. Simply put: find a way to specialize. Have a look through the Keyword Ideas table in Keyword Tool. We saw some entries there that showed potential.

Ranked 19th: fidget, up from #206

Last one! And it’s another we like the look of.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “fidget.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Etsy shoppers in Australia over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “fidget.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Etsy shoppers in Australia over the past 15 months.

“Fidget” has sword’s low Competition, but a far better Average CTR: 128%. And for January, fidget’s monthly CTR is 149%, third-highest of this Top 20. Definitely a niche worth researching!

And next, let’s get to your Monthly CTR Roundup. For these, we analyze your Top 250 keywords to determine which have the highest monthly CTRs. So if you’re here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now, this lightning round is for you!

Roundup: Australia’s top Etsy keywords with 125%+ CTRs now

Of all the marketplaces we cover, Etsy has the most keywords with high CTRs. Even on Etsy though, CTRs above 125% are rare. Keep in mind too that these calculations are drawn exclusively from their January data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, some of these keywords should still be popular with shoppers now. As for the Valentine-related searches, we recommend adding them to a Keyword List to revisit ahead of next year’s.

Another tip! Do you sell giftables? When your cut-off for Christmas shipping has passed, switch to optimizing for Valentine’s Day shoppers. Remember, Etsy’s algorithm needs a good six weeks to see how shoppers respond to your SEO changes.

One last thing before we begin. Some of the following shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be protected by intellectual property rights or prohibited by Etsy, please look before you leap!
