Amazon trends climbing highest fastest in October
Amazon’s Top 20 turnover averages about five new Month on Month. “Climbers” is our term for current Top 20 searches that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. The reason we focus on these? Because in terms of climbing the ranks, these queue jumpers have outperformed their fellows. They indicate way more shoppers searching for stuff they weren’t as much just 30 or so days ago.
We expected a slightly higher rate of Top 20 turnover for October. Due to Halloween shopping, of course. “Halloween” and related searches don’t start climbing on Amazon as early as on other platforms. It’s that fast Prime shipping. Shoppers wait until the last minute.
Also in October, Amazon hosted its fourth annual “Big Deal Days,” a 48-hour sale for Prime members. Held seven+ weeks ahead of Black Friday / Cyber Monday sales, it’s intended to get the jump on gift buying.
And according to Amazon’s reporting to its 3P sellers:
“More Prime members shopped this year’s Prime Big Deal Days compared to last year’s event, with higher sales and more items sold during the two-day event than any previous October shopping event.” Amazon, “Prime Big Deal Days was our biggest October shopping event ever.”
Seller News, October 31, 2024
The sale was marketed as featuring early holiday deals from popular brands and categories. So we’ve been eager to get this data. See if we could spot what the hottest gifts and Black Friday buys might be this year. We were so surprised! Amazon has only three searches new Month on Month.
#2 halloween costumes, up from #71 in September
#10 lego, up from #27
#18 halloween, up from #80.
Let’s see what light Keyword Tool can shed upon these. Then, here at the end, we’ll analyze what Amazon’s top shopper searches tell us about what might be selling best now.
Ranking 2nd: halloween costumes, up from #71
Prime shipping or not, we were surprised Amazon had no Halloween searches in its September Top 20. The September before, Amazon’s No. 2 search had been “halloween decorations” with 1,171,780 searches. This September? “Halloween decorations” was still the highest-ranking Halloween-related search. But it only ranked 40th. And Year on Year, it was down 70%.
So, we’re eager to see how October’s No. 2 “halloween costumes” looks.
Ugh, that Average CTR: only 54%. Now that’s scary. Otherwise, stats aren’t bad. Down a little (just 12%) Year on Year. Maybe a few more Halloween fans have figured out that Etsy’s best for Halloween?
Ranking 10th: lego, up from #27
“Lego” is a fairly frequent flyer on Amazon’s Top 20 lists.
“Lego” is slightly up over its performance during July’s Prime Day (a “Day” which actually lasts at least a week). And granted: Year on Year it’s down a couple thousand searches. But we expect “lego” is already on its way back up to the two million+ it had last November and December.
Ranking 18th: halloween, up from #80
Here’s an updated screenshot that includes the data from November 2024.
“Halloween” is down Year on Year more than twice as much as halloween costumes’ 12%. Halloween is down 28%. So, being data geeks, we took a quick peek again when we had November’s data. Comparing November 2023’s data with this November, it’s up by 38%. Odd, right? That is to say, odd for Amazon. On Etsy, Halloween trends year round.
And that’s with October’s paltry three climbers! As mentioned, we’ll finish with a lightning round of Amazon’s most popular products that show the most promising purchase intent.
New to online selling? On marketplace sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs are an indicator of purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).
And speaking of which! Here’s your insider round-up of Amazon’s top keywords that have the highest CTRs. Are you here to find out what to sell on Amazon? Then this lightning round is for you!
Amazon’s Top 250 keywords with 100%+ CTRs now
Note that we calculated these CTRs using only October’s data. That means that regardless of what their 12-mo average CTRs are, these should be hot with shoppers now.
Of the top 250 keywords, all these have October CTRs of 100% or higher. Note that for Amazon, CTRs this high are exceptional. As we go, we’ll shout out any mad-rare ones with 125+% CTRs.
We know it’s hard for new and small Amazon sellers to identify product niches in which they can succeed. But we do see some here that even Handmade sellers might be able to get in on. And finally, our usual word to the wise: a good number of these are trademarked. Or are otherwise off-limits or tricky to sell on Amazon. But we hope there are also worthwhile leads here that prove to be profitable for you.
Ranking 1-50
None in the Top 20 this month! The closest to qualify is #13 iphone 16 pro max case with a CTR of 99%. The first that that meets our criteria is #33 creatine. And there are two more in the Top 50: #37 iphone 16 pro case, and #41 water bottle.
Ranking 51-100
Holy cow, none in this group until the end where there’s a pair. Ranking #98-99: standing desk, and crocs.
Ranking 101-150
Here we have #110 shower curtain; #120 steak; and then another pair: #132-133 owala, and bidet. And there’s only more more in this group: #142 anker power bank.
Ranking 151-200
The first here is #166 pillow, followed by #174 hand soap, and #178 iphone 12. And that’s it for the Top 200. Interesting! October is turning out to be sparse.
Ranking 201-250
Our final section begins with a pair ranked #222-223: floor lamp (with a CTR of 136%) and govee. Skip just two places and there’s a trio at #226-228 desk lamp (with a 127% CTR), mousepad, and rug. And just two more: #240 honey, and #242 computer desk.
Good luck, everyone!
