If you’re new to Etsy or struggling to get your products in front of potential buyers, you’re not alone. With so many shops and listings, standing out can be tough. That’s where SEO comes in.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is how you make sure your products appear in search results when buyers type in keywords. On Etsy, SEO works a bit differently than it does on Google. In this post, we’ll break down the basics of Etsy SEO and give you some tips you can start using in your own shop right away.

What Is Etsy SEO and How Does It Work?

Etsy SEO helps connect shoppers to your listings by using keywords (the words buyers type in the search bar) and other factors to rank products. Etsy’s search algorithm considers a few things when deciding which listings to show in a search, including:

  1. Keywords: Etsy looks for keywords in your listing titles, tags, descriptions, and attributes.
  2. Listing Quality Score: Etsy tracks how well your listings perform.  Things like clicks, favorites, and sales matter. The better your listings perform, the higher they rank.
  3. Shop Quality: The quality of your shop is important in building trust with your buyers. Having a shop icon which represents your brand as well as other graphic elements is important in building shop quality.
  4. Customer Service: Message response rate, case rate, and average review rating all have weight in how your products rank in Etsy search.
  5. Recency: Newer listings may get a temporary boost in search to test how they perform.
  6. Relevancy: Etsy favors listings that match what shoppers are actively searching for.

Now that we’ve got a basic idea of what Etsy SEO is, let’s dive into how you can improve your shop’s visibility with some actionable tips. For an extensive list of factors that affect your search visibility check out the Etsy Seller Handbook’s article on how Etsy search works.

Etsy SEO Basics You Can Implement Today

  1. Research Keywords That Buyers Are Actually Searching For

The first step toward  optimizing your shop is understanding what keywords your potential customers are using. You’ll want to use keywords that describe your product in the same order that shoppers would type them into the search bar. For example, if you’re selling handmade wooden trays, try using specific terms like “handmade wooden tray” or “rustic serving tray” rather than just “tray.”

Where to start:

  • Use Etsy’s search bar to see what autocomplete suggestions come up when you type in your product. This gives you an idea of what people are actually looking for.
  • Use tools like eRank to analyze keyword trends, see search volumes, and get ideas for keywords you may not have thought of.
  1. Optimize Your Titles and Tags

Once you’ve got a list of good keywords, the next step is making sure they show up in your listing titles and tags.

  • Titles: Your title should include the most important keywords, ideally near the beginning. For example, instead of just saying “Tray”, use something like “Handmade Wooden Tray – Rustic Serving Tray for Home Décor”. Avoid stuffing your title with keywords; Etsy recommends keeping titles concise and easy to read.
  • Tags: Tags are equally important. You get 13 tags on Etsy. We recommend using them all!  Make sure each tag is relevant to your product and reflects how buyers would search. For instance, your tags could include phrases like “handmade home décor”, “wooden tray gift”, or “rustic kitchen accessory”. Avoid single word tags when possible.
  • Superstar Keyword: These are short phrases that describes your listing. eRank uses these to provide more relevant information for each listing.

  1. Write an Effective Product Description

Although Etsy doesn’t directly index product descriptions for SEO, a well-written description can increase your conversion rates. This signals to Etsy that your product is relevant to shoppers’ searches, which can help improve your overall search ranking.

Your description should:

  • Describe your product clearly and in detail.
  • Mention your primary keywords in a natural way (without keyword stuffing).
  • Answer common customer questions like dimensions, materials, and usage.
  1. Use All Relevant Attributes

When creating your listing, Etsy allows you to choose attributes like color, size, material, and occasion. These      are used by Etsy to filter search results, so make sure you fill in all of the attributes that apply to your product.

For example, if you’re selling jewelry, use attributes like “gold”, “handmade”, or “wedding”. These attributes act like extra keywords that help your product appear in filtered searches.

  1. Pay Attention to Your Photos

Photos aren’t just about making your product look good; they can also affect your search ranking. Etsy favors listings with high-quality, clear images. Make sure your photos showcase your product from multiple angles and in use, if possible. Keep in mind that your first photo acts as your first impression to buyers. Make sure this photo clearly represents your product and entices customers to click through to the product.

Bonus tip: Etsy allows you to add a video to your listing. Videos give buyers a better sense of your product, which can boost engagement and help your ranking.

  1. Don’t Fall for the “Active Listings” Myth

There’s a common misconception among Etsy sellers that making changes to your listings or regularly updating them will give you a temporary boost in search results. While it’s true that newly created listings receive a short-term boost—so Etsy can test them in search results—simply tweaking existing listings doesn’t trigger the same effect.

That said, regularly updating your listings is still a good idea. It’s not for an SEO boost, but for other important reasons: refreshing photos, improving descriptions, or adding new keywords can make your product more appealing to buyers and lead to higher conversion rates. Higher sales and engagement signal to Etsy that your listing is relevant, which can help improve its ranking over time.

So, while updating listings won’t magically move you up in search, keeping your listings fresh and optimized for your audience will still benefit your shop in the long run.

Final Thoughts on Etsy SEO

Etsy SEO might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but once you start implementing these tips, it becomes second nature. By using the right keywords, optimizing your titles and tags, and paying attention to performance, you can help more people discover your products.

If you’re looking for more in-depth insights, tools like eRank can help you track trends and competition, making it easier to fine-tune your SEO strategy. Don’t forget to use Etsy’s own analytics to continually monitor and improve your shop’s performance.

With time, patience and a bit of experimentation, you can strengthen your shop’s SEO and get your items in front of more shoppers on Etsy!

If you’re an Etsy seller looking to boost your shop’s performance, increase visibility, and understand market trends, eRank is a valuable tool. eRank provides data-driven insights to optimize your Etsy listings, stay on top of trends, and improve your shop’s SEO strategy. If you’re a seller on platforms other than Etsy, eRank offers trend and keyword research to help you rank higher in your brand’s niche. Here’s how to get started.

  1. Sign Up for eRank and Connect Your Shop
  2. Explore Your Dashboard
  3. Analyze Your Listings
  4. Try the Keyword Tool and Save to a Keyword List
  5. Monitor Trends
  6. Download the eRank Browser Extension

Step 1: Sign Up for eRank and Connect Your Shop

Go to eRank and sign up for an account. Our free plan offers a variety of tools. However, sellers who want more in-depth insights, higher daily quotas, and access to a wider range of features should consider a paid plan. You can learn about the different options on the Plans page.

After signing up, you’ll need to Connect Your Shop to eRank. Connecting your shop allows eRank to analyze your listings and provide you with tailored recommendations. eRank only has the ability to read your shop’s data. It is not able to make changes to your Etsy listings in any way. When your shop is connected, you will gain access to features such as Listing Audits, Traffic Stats, and Health Check. These tools show you actionable steps to improve your listings and learn what keywords buyers use to find your shop.

Step 2: Explore Your Dashboard

Once you’ve connected your Etsy shop, you’ll land on your eRank dashboard, which is your go-to for daily insights. From Traffic Stats to Top Keywords, the dashboard provides a wealth of information about your shop’s performance. You’ll also find quick access to helpful features such as the eRank Blog.

Each time you make changes to your listings or want to see the latest data for your shop, click the “Refresh Data” button in the top right-hand corner to allow eRank to sync any updates onto your dashboard.

One of the first helpful features to dive into is the Health Check tool. This tool shows easy, actionable steps you can take to ensure that your listings are free of spelling errors, missing tags, missing photos, and one-word tags. Fixing these flagged issues improves the appearance of your listings. It can also help them rank higher in shoppers’ search results.

Another useful feature is the Spotted on Etsy tool. This report displays results stripped of Etsy’s AI personalization and paid ads, showing which of your listings eRank found among the first 100 listings for specific keywords while performing random searches on Etsy.

This feature also shows you the keywords that shoppers used to find your listings in Etsy search, how popular those keywords are, and how your items’ ranks for all keywords have changed over the past 14 days.

Please note that, in order for eRank to show you which of your keywords brought real shoppers to your listings, you will need to connect a Google Analytics account to your Etsy shop. For a step-by-step guide on syncing the two, read this eRank help article: How to set up Google Analytics 4 for your Etsy shop.

Step 3: Analyze Your Listings

Once you have connected your Etsy shop, use eRank’s Listing Audits tool to identify potential issues for individual listings. This tool evaluates nearly all parts of a listing and highlights how well they follow Etsy’s Best Practices. In addition, it offers suggestions on how you can tweak and improve your listings for better search visibility.

While using this tool and working on your listings, remember eRank’s Golden Rule: Never touch the SEO of a listing that is performing well for you.

Read Etsy’s Creating Listings That Convert and Etsy SEO Basics articles to learn more about crafting great listings and planning out your own SEO strategy.

Step 4: Try the Keyword Tool and Save to a Keyword List

One of eRank’s most powerful tools is the Keyword Tool. This tool helps you discover high-traffic keywords relevant to your products, showing search volume, competition, and trends. It’s a great starting point for SEO for beginners, You can use this data to improve your Etsy listings by finding high-performing keywords to include in your titles, tags, and descriptions.

Watch this short video to see a demo of the many features this tool has to offer, as well as how to use it:

When you’re ready to jump in, type any keyword into the search bar, and let the Keyword Tool do the heavy lifting for you!

Tip! Free members can save up to 5 keywords to one list, while paid plans have higher limits.

Stay ahead of the competition by keeping an eye on the latest market trends. Use our Trend Buzz and Monthly Trends tools to see what buyers are searching for right now, and plan for upcoming holidays or seasonal spikes with relevant product ideas.

Use Trend Buzz to see the most popular keywords on Etsy and over two dozen other platforms for the past 30 days. The Monthly Trends tool allows you to learn what was trending on Etsy for the past 15 months, in each of Etsy’s main categories as well as for POD (Print on Demand) products.

Take a few minutes to see what has been trending lately to help plan future listings or marketing campaigns for your shop.

Step 6: Download the eRank Browser Extension

Save time on keyword research and competition tracking with the eRank Browser Extension, currently available in the Google Chrome web store. This tools works while you are performing research on etsy.com. On the home page, the extension shows you insights such as trending keywords along with their search trend graph, illustrating their popularity over time.

When viewing an individual listing, the extension shows you the statistics for that listing. These statistics include estimated sales and revenue, the estimated conversion rate, and the tags that listing uses.

As with the Keyword Tool, use the star icon to save keywords straight to a Keyword List.

If you are viewing an entire shop, the extension displays the overall shop statistics for that shop. You can view their total sales, sales ranks, and sales history. By clicking the Tags tab, you can see the tags this shop uses along with their search volume and competition. Understanding Etsy as a Global Marketplace

Etsy isn’t just an American platform. It is a global community of buyers and sellers. While the United States remains the largest market, accounting for 75% of Etsy’s total sales in the first quarter of 2025, sellers have a huge opportunity to reach customers in many other significant countries (Source: Etsy, Inc. Reports First Quarter 2025 Results).

Beyond the US, the United Kingdom is consistently highlighted as Etsy’s most significant international market. Sellers on the UK Etsy marketplace generated £8.71 billion in sales in 2024, with buyer penetration among adult women comparable to the United States. Germany is also a key international market, historically ranking as the second largest after the UK and boasting a very active local market where domestic sales accounted for approximately 80% of its total sales in 2022 (Source: Etsy News – The Creative Entrepreneurs Behind Etsy’s Special Items).

These countries—along with Canada, Australia, and France—are among Etsy’s six primary areas where the company focuses its growth and localization efforts. This is great news for you because it means Etsy is actively investing in these areas, which can influence your product visibility and optimization strategy. The question isn’t, “Is Etsy available worldwide?” but rather, “How can I tap into these vibrant international markets?”

How eRank Tools Work for You, Globally

You might have heard that some of eRank’s data focuses on the US market. While this is true, eRank provides data for many other countries as well, giving you the insights you need to sell globally. Let’s see how our tools can help you specifically.

1. Find Keywords for Your Target Countries with the Keyword Tool

The Keyword Tool is your first stop for international success. It helps you discover what buyers in specific countries are searching for.

  • Go beyond the US: While the US market is large, you can easily change the country setting to see search data for countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, and more.
  • Find regional phrases: A buyer in one country might use a different word for the same item than a buyer in another. The Keyword Tool helps you find these specific regional terms. For example, a search for “beanie” in the US might show you related terms like “wool hat” in the UK.

2. Audit your listings for international success with Listing Audit

Once you have your keywords, you need to make sure your listings are perfectly optimized for your international audience. The Listing Audit tool helps you do this. It goes beyond a simple check by letting you analyze the performance of all 13 tags for a single listing, country by country, and language by language.

For example, if the main language of your shop is English and you’ve manually translated a listing into French, you can use this tool to compare the data for your English tags in a country like Canada with the performance of your French tags for the same country. This allows you to fine-tune your keyword strategy and ensure your listings are speaking directly to different international buyers. It’s a great way to check that you’ve included the right keywords and are following best practices for a truly global audience.

3. Analyze Your Competition with the Rank Checker

Want to see how your competitors are doing? The Rank Checker tool lets you see how your listings rank for specific keywords in different countries. This can help you understand what’s working for other international sellers and give you ideas on how to improve your own shop’s strategy.

Strategic Steps to Succeed Globally

Now, let’s look at some simple steps you can take today to use eRank to reach a global audience, whether you want to sell on Etsy in the USA from Canada or from Europe to the rest of the world.

Step 1: Discover Country-Specific Keywords

While Etsy automatically translates titles and tags, it doesn’t always account for every regional variation. For example, a buyer in one country might use a different word for the same item than a buyer in another. This is where the eRank Keyword Tool becomes your best friend. Use it to find the exact words and phrases that international buyers are using to find products like yours.

We’ve embedded the video below starting right at the section that’s relevant to this topic. Please note that while the beginning and ending cover other subjects, the part you’ll see first is the one connected to this blog post.

Step 2: Take Control with Manual Translations

Etsy provides automatic translations for your listings, which is helpful. However, manual translations are much better! Buyers trust them more and they often lead to more sales. This is because your own translations sound more natural and can capture cultural nuances that a machine might miss. If you are fluent in other languages, add your own translations for your shop title, listings, and tags. A simple tip: Keep your descriptions simple and direct, avoiding jokes or cultural references that might not translate well.

Step 3: Optimize for the Right Audience

To get found, you need to think like your customer. Use keywords in your listing titles and descriptions that match what people are actually searching for. This is true for all sellers, but it’s crucial for international sellers. Your location is a huge asset. Your “Made in [Your Country]” products have a unique value that many buyers specifically seek. Mention your country and the authenticity of your craftsmanship in your descriptions. Get shipping right: Most international buyers will only see items that ship to their country, so be sure to set up international shipping and be transparent about your policies and delivery times. This builds trust and helps your listings appear in their search results.

Final Encouragement: You Can Do This!

Selling internationally on Etsy can seem complicated, but it’s an exciting opportunity. Don’t let fear keep you from getting started. Every successful international seller started exactly where you are. Your unique perspective and craftsmanship are exactly what a global audience wants to discover.

The key is to combine your creative passion with a smart, data-informed strategy. eRank is here to help you get there.

If you’re new to Etsy or struggling to get your products in front of potential buyers, you’re not alone. Understanding what Etsy SEO is can feel overwhelming at first. With so many shops and Etsy listings, standing out can be tough. That’s where SEO comes in.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your products appear in Etsy search results when shoppers type in keywords. On Etsy, SEO works a bit differently than it does on Google. In this post, we’ll cover what Etsy SEO is and how it works, as well as share practical Etsy SEO tips you can start using in your shop right away.

What Is Etsy SEO and How Does the Etsy Algorithm Work?

Etsy SEO “explains” your listings to Etsy’s search algorithm and helps shoppers connect to your listings through the keywords they type into the Etsy search bar. Multiple factors determine a listing’s ranking in Etsy search results; we’ll discuss those shortly. There are two phases of Etsy search:

Query Matching

In this initial phase, Etsy’s algorithm takes a shopper’s search and matches it with listings that contain that keyword. This is where it’s essential to understand how Etsy SEO works and why keyword placement matters within your listings’ titles, descriptions, tags, attributes, and categories. There are two types of matching:

  1. Broad Matching: This happens when a listing contains two or more terms from a shopper’s search, but those terms are not positioned next to one another. For example, if a tag is “handmade wooden tray,” broad matches would include “handmade tray.”
  2. Exact Matching: This happens when a listing contains two or more terms from a shopper’s search, and those terms are positioned in the same order that a shopper typed them into the search bar. So, for the keyword “rustic wooden tray,” the exact matches would include “wooden tray,” “rustic wooden tray,” and “rustic wooden.” This type of matching sends a slightly stronger relevancy signal to Etsy, so listings that are exact matched to a shopper’s query rank slightly higher in search results. Use keyword phrases that are tailored to promote exact matching within your listings whenever it makes sense.

Ranking

After Etsy has found the listings that match a query, its algorithm uses various aspects of a shop’s quality and its listings’ details to rank the listings according to what best suits the shopper. This phase contains the personalization level of rank, catering results to each Etsy shopper individually.

Some of the things considered during the ranking phase include:

  • Listing Quality Score: Etsy tracks how well your listings perform. Things like clicks, favorites, and sales matter. The better your listings perform, the higher they rank.
  • Shop Quality: Your shop’s overall quality is important for building trust with your customers. Having a shop with a completed “About” section and an icon that represents your brand is important to building your shop’s quality. Completing your shop policies also sends positive signals to Etsy.
  • Customer Service: Message response rate, case rate, and average review rating all have weight in how your products rank in Etsy search. Great reviews can also improve your Etsy shop’s visibility over time.
  • Recency: Newer listings may get a temporary boost in search so Etsy can test how they perform.
  • Relevance: Etsy favors listings that match what shoppers are actively searching for.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what Etsy SEO is and how it works, let’s dive into how you can improve your shop’s visibility with some actionable tips. For an extensive list of factors that affect your search visibility, check out the Etsy Seller Handbook’s article “How Etsy Search Works.”

Etsy SEO Basics You Can Implement Today

1. Research Keywords That Shoppers Are Actually Searching For

If you’re learning how to do Etsy SEO, the first step is understanding what keywords your potential customers are using when they search for products on Etsy. You’ll want to use keywords that describe your product and, as we mentioned earlier, occur in the same order that a shopper would type them into the search bar. For example, if you’re selling handmade wooden trays, try using specific terms like “handmade wooden tray” or “rustic serving tray,” rather than just “tray.”

Use tools like eRank’s Trend Buzz, Keyword Tool, and Monthly Trends to analyze keyword trends, identify search volumes, and get ideas for keywords you may not have thought of, so you can improve your Etsy SEO.

2. Optimize Your Etsy Listing Titles and Tags

Once you’ve got a list of relevant keywords, the next step is making sure that they show up in your listing.

Titles

One of our most useful Etsy SEO tips is to write clear, concise titles that include your items’ most relevant keywords in a “natural” manner. For example, instead of just using “Tray,” use a phrase that is more specific to your listing, such as “Handmade Rustic Wooden Tray.” Keyword stuffing, or trying to fit in as many terms as possible, usually ends in a nonsense jumble that is difficult for many shoppers to understand. Instead, try using a few short phrases that clearly explain what the item is. Save keywords such as “gift for mom” for your tags, as this keyword doesn’t provide any insights into the item itself.

Tags

Etsy provides spots for 13 tags in each listing, and we recommend that you use all of them! Make sure each tag is relevant to your product and reflects how shoppers would search. For instance, if you sell rustic wooden trays, your tags could include phrases like “handmade home decor,” “wooden tray gift,” and “rustic kitchen accessory.” Avoid single-word Etsy tags when possible. Etsy takes all of the terms in each of your listings’ titles, descriptions, tags, categories, and attributes and mixes them up to match shoppers’ queries. Because of this, it isn’t necessary to repeat the same word multiple times throughout a listing.

Superstar Keywords

These are short phrases (also known as “long-tail keywords”) that describe your listing. eRank uses these within the Listing Audit tool to provide more relevant information for each listing.

3. Write an Effective Product Description

Although Etsy doesn’t use product descriptions during the first phase of Etsy SEO, it does consider them in the ranking phase. Since it is used during the second, more personalized phase, a well-written description has the power to potentially boost your listings’ conversion rates.

Your description should:

  • Describe your product in detail
  • Mention your primary keywords in a natural way (without keyword stuffing)
  • Answer common customer questions (What is it made out of? What are its dimensions?)

4. Use All Relevant Attributes to Improve Etsy SEO

When creating your listings, Etsy allows you to choose attributes like color, size, material, and occasion. These are used by Etsy to filter search results, so make sure that you add all of the attributes that apply to your product.

For example, if you’re selling wedding rings, use attributes like “gold” or “wedding.” These act like extra keywords and help your product appear in filtered searches.

Please note that you should only use the “Holiday” or “Occasion” attributes when they are relevant for your items. Etsy recommends leaving these blank if they don’t apply to an item, as adding them to an irrelevant item will miscategorize it.

5. Pay Attention to Your Photos

Photos aren’t just for making your products look good; they can also affect their search rankings. Etsy favors listings with high-quality, clear images. Make sure that your listings’ photos showcase your products a) in use, and b) from multiple angles, if possible. Keep in mind that a listing’s first photo acts as its first impression to shoppers. It should clearly represent your product and encourage them to click.

Bonus tip: Etsy allows you to add a video to each of your listings. Videos give shoppers a better sense of your products, which can boost engagement and help them rank higher in search results. If you need help with listing videos, try using eRank’s Create Video tool.

6. Don’t Fall for the “Active Listings” Myth

There’s a common misconception among Etsy sellers that making changes to your listings or regularly updating them will give you a temporary boost in search results. While it’s true that newly created listings receive a short-term boost (so that Etsy can test them in search results), simply tweaking existing listings doesn’t trigger the same effect.

That said, regularly updating your listings is still a good idea. It’s not for an SEO boost, but for other important reasons: refreshing photos, improving descriptions, or adding new keywords can make your products more appealing to shoppers and lead to higher conversion rates. Higher sales and engagement signal to Etsy that your listings are relevant, which can help improve their rankings naturally over time.

So, while updating listings won’t magically move you up in search, keeping your listings fresh and optimized for your audience will still benefit your shop in the long run. We recommend that you always check your listings’ stats before making any changes to their SEO, and never touch the SEO of a listing that is already performing well! You can use eRank’s Changes tool to track the changes you make to individual listings and determine whether or not those revisions are increasing the listings’ views, favorites, or sales.

7. Use Your Shop Stats and Traffic Stats tool

Etsy provides sellers with tools to track how well their listings are performing in search. In your shop dashboard, under “Stats,” you’ll find “Shop Traffic.” Click any listing within this section to see which keywords shoppers are using to find it.

If you have Google Analytics set up for your Etsy shop, sync it with your eRank account to access the Traffic Stats tool. This tool shows you your shop’s top keywords, where the traffic to your Etsy shop comes from, and buyer demographics.

Use this data to fine-tune your listings. If certain keywords drive a lot of traffic, try applying them to similar listings. If you notice that a listing isn’t performing well, consider adjusting its tags, title, or description based on what the data tells you.

If you’ve ever looked at your Etsy stats and wondered whether your conversion rate is “good” or “bad,” you’re not alone. Many Etsy sellers wonder what a good conversion rate on Etsy looks like. Unfortunately, it’s one of the easiest metrics to misunderstand without context.

In this blog, eRank explains what “conversion rate” means on Etsy, what ranges are considered normal for an Etsy store, and how to use your shop’s data to improve it.

What Is a Conversion Rate?

Your conversion rate is the percentage of visits to your shop that end in a purchase. A helpful way to conceptualize this statistic is to see how many sales on Etsy you make for every 100 visits to a) your shop, or b) to a specific listing of yours.

Etsy automatically calculates this important statistic for your shop, and eRank provides estimated conversion rates at the listing level. This data lets you see how individual products are performing.

Please note that Etsy’s search algorithm takes into account how a single listing performs for a specific keyword in search results, not your shop’s overall conversion rate. While it’s worth seeing and understanding your shop’s overall conversion, it isn’t something to stress about or monitor on a daily basis.

How Are Conversion Rates Calculated?

A shop’s or listing’s conversion rate is calculated by dividing its total number of sales by its total number of visits, then multiplying the resulting number by 100. For example, if your shop receives 200 visits and makes 5 sales, your conversion rate is 2.5%.

While it’s helpful to understand the formula, you don’t need to calculate this manually. Etsy shows your overall shop conversion rate, and eRank shows listing conversion data for individual active listings, giving you more detailed insights.

Where Can You See Your Etsy Conversion Rates?

On Etsy (Shop Conversion Rate)

Within Etsy, you’ll find your shop conversion rate in your Shop Manager. To view it, click “Stats” in the side panel on the left side of your screen, then click “Shop Traffic.” Choose your preferred timeframe using the dropdown menu at the top of the page.

Etsy Shop Manager stats showing visits, orders, conversion rate and revenue

On eRank (Listing Conversion Rate)

To find the conversion rate for a specific listing on eRank, go to the Main Menu on the left side of your screen and click “Listing Optimization.” Then, click “Listings.” This tool shows you all of your active Etsy listings.

Find the listing you’d like to view the conversion rate for and click its title to run a Listing Audit. This separate tool provides an in-depth analysis of its images, tags, description, and more. In the top row of data underneath the “Audit” tab, you’ll see “Conv. Rate.” This shows the estimated conversion rate for that specific listing.

This number reflects how that individual listing is converting, not your shop’s conversion rate. This makes it especially useful when you’re checking in on your shop’s listings and updating low-performers.

Average Conversion Rates on Etsy Shops

There isn’t one “perfect” conversion rate that applies to every Etsy seller. It varies depending on product type, price points, category, and buyer intent. In practice, most Etsy shops will see all kinds of different conversion rates across listings, and those figures will all fluctuate throughout the year. This is normal.

In this Etsy Seller Handbook article, Etsy shares that many shops see average conversion rates of between 1% and 5%, but this range is only a guideline. A digital download, a craft supply, and a high-priced handmade item will not convert at the same rate on Etsy. Again, this is normal and nothing to worry about.

Rather than comparing your store to big ecommerce websites or shops in unrelated niches, it’s far more helpful to monitor this stat for your own shop’s listings over time, assessing any significant changes as they happen.

Why Conversion Rate Matters for Sellers

Conversion rate matters because it directly affects how much revenue you earn from the visitors who purchase from your shop. When conversion improves, more of that traffic to your shop turns into sales.

Conversion also helps build keyword authority. Etsy’s algorithm is designed to show shoppers the listings that best match what they’re searching for. When a listing consistently makes sales for a specific keyword, it signals to the Etsy algorithm that shoppers find it relevant for that particular search.

Over time, Etsy is more likely to show that listing again for similar searches. This is especially important for competitive keywords. It may be difficult to rank for broad keywords like “wall art.” Listings often perform better when they focus on more specific, niche searches such as “custom nursery animal wall art” or “personalized pet portrait print.”

Do You Have Enough Data to Assess Your Conversion Rates?

Before worrying too much about your conversion rate, it’s important to consider how much data you actually have. Conversion rates based on a small number of sales or visits can be misleading, and this is where a lot of sellers start worrying too soon. With brand new listings in your Etsy shop, inconsistent conversion rates are, you guessed it, completely normal in the beginning.

Conversion becomes more meaningful once a shop or listing has received consistent traffic over time. Until then, it’s usually better to focus on improving the basics that impact your Etsy shop performance, like photos, product descriptions, pricing, and keywords.

What if Your Listings Haven’t Sold Yet?

This is very common, especially in shops with a large number of listings. In most Etsy shops, a small percentage of listings generates the majority of sales.

Listings without sales don’t harm your shop. Although, over time, they may appear less often in Etsy search results. If a listing has been renewed multiple times without selling, it may be worth reviewing how clearly the listing communicates value to shoppers and whether it matches their expectations in search results.

However, you might have a listing that has plenty of visits but no conversions (sales). This often means shoppers are interested enough to click, but something is preventing them from purchasing. Or, they may be buying a different item from your shop instead. If you’re struggling to convert clicks into sales, this eRank blog post offers tips on how to adjust your listings so that they are more appealing to shoppers.

How to Improve Your Etsy Conversion Rate

At the end of the day, improving your Etsy shop’s conversion rate means attracting the right shoppers and making it easy for them to feel confident about buying from you. Small changes can boost your Etsy conversion rate and help you get more sales.

  • Strong SEO: Use keywords and tags that closely match what Etsy shoppers are actually searching for. eRank’s Keyword Tool helps Etsy sellers identify real search terms, along with search volume and competition. More targeted keywords bring in shoppers with clearer intent and increase the chance of turning those visits into sales. Read this eRank blog post to learn more about SEO.
  • Clear product photos: Once a listing appears in Etsy search results, its main photo (also known as a “thumbnail image”) plays a major role in whether shoppers click and trust the product. If a listing doesn’t get clicks, it can’t convert, no matter how good the product is. Good lighting and clear images that accurately show the product help build trust and encourage purchases, two factors that are key to strong conversion rates. You can check out eRank’s Photo Guidelines for Etsy Listings here.
  • Readable listing titles: Clear, easy-to-read titles help shoppers quickly understand what you’re selling. Lead with your most important keywords and keep titles simple and descriptive. For more information on writing titles, read this eRank blog post.
  • Assess demand and competition: Make sure there’s real demand for what you’re selling. Items can’t convert if shoppers aren’t searching for them. Use eRank’s Keyword Tool to check search volume, clicks, and competition, and Trend Buzz to spot what’s trendy on Etsy and other marketplaces.
  • Review your pricing: Pricing affects conversion, but pricing well doesn’t mean pricing low. You can use the “Search Results Analysis” section inside the Keyword Tool to research optimal prices for your products. Simply search for a keyword or keyphrase that describes your item and scroll down to the “Price Range” graph. Here, you can see how similar items are priced, and adjust your price accordingly.
eRank Keyword Tool Price Range graph showing the distribution of Etsy listing prices for a keyword
  • Consider your category: Conversion rates vary by category. Higher-priced items, like original art or vintage furniture, usually require more views before a sale. Lower-priced or consumable items, such as stickers or craft supplies, tend to achieve a higher conversion rate more quickly.
  • Understand traffic and seasonality: Seasonal changes in traffic and sales are normal on Etsy. Many shops experience slower periods during parts of the year and higher activity in the fourth quarter. Using the Competitor Sales Tool to track competitors with similar products and pricing can help you tell the difference between a seasonal slowdown and a listing issue.
  • Drive qualified traffic: Traffic from social media, email lists, or repeat customers often converts at a higher rate. Shoppers who are already familiar with your brand and products tend to be more motivated to buy. Use your Share & Save shop link to send potential buyers to your shop.
  • Encourage repeat business: Returning customers are more likely to buy again. Clear shop policies, good communication, accurate processing times, and reliable service will help build trust and long-term shop growth.

💡 TIP: At eRank, we recommend not changing the SEO of listings that are already performing well. Focus your efforts where improvements are needed most.

Start Improving Your Conversion Rate Today

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Pick one area (images, keywords, etc.) to focus on that first. Make a small change and give it time to see how shoppers respond.

Improving conversion is more about steady progress than big, dramatic changes. Small improvements can help boost your conversion rates, increase your Etsy sales, and help you sell on Etsy more effectively using the traffic you already have.

Struggling to get your products in front of the right Etsy shoppers? Your tags might be the bottleneck. These 13 little phrases work alongside your title, description, and attributes to signal to Etsy’s search engine—and shoppers—exactly what you sell. Use every tag slot, and you’ll cast a wider net. Miss a slot, and you could leave money on the table.

Here is a “dos and don’ts” list for Etsy tags along with some handy eRank tools to help with your tag research.

DO Search for Keywords With High Search and Low Competition

To be found in Etsy search results, you need to incorporate terms into your listings that have high search traffic. In addition, make sure these terms are not being used by tons of other shops in your brand’s niche. If your shop’s SEO stands out from the crowd, your creations will as well!

Use eRank’s Keyword Tool to find tags that meet these criteria by accessing it in one of three ways.

  1. Type any keyword into the “Enter keyword” field at the top of the page and click the green lookup button on the right.
  2. In the Main Menu, select “Keyword Research” > “Keyword Tool.”
  3. Click on a keyword within many other tools such as Tag Report or Trend Buzz to load the Keyword Tool for that specific keyword.

Type any keyword into the “Enter Keywords” field in the search bar and use the dropdown menu on the right to select for which country you would like to view data. Select “GLO” to view global data. Click the green lookup button and start deep diving into the information.

Screenshot of the search bar in eRank's Keyword Tool.
Type any keyword into the “Enter Keywords” field in the search bar. Then use the dropdown menu on the right to select for which country you would like to view data.

Keyword Statistics

The “Keyword Statistics” section displays the keyword’s average number of searches and clicks per month, as well as its click-through rate (CTR). These numbers are based on the past 12 months of data collected for that keyword. If viewing keyword data from Etsy, you can also see the keyword’s estimated competition.

Screenshot of keyword statistics for the keyword "mom gift" using eRank's Keyword Tool.

Use the “Keyword Statistics” module in the “Search Metrics” section at the top of the page to view the keyword’s search data.

eRank color-codes this data to make your research easier. Green and yellow indicate that a term has relatively high average monthly searches, clicks, and CTR. They also indicate that items with the term have a relatively low amount of competition on Etsy.

If the keyword you entered is trending right now, the phrase “Trending in Search!” displays in yellow next to the keyword. Keywords with a high number of clicks and/or a high CTR means shoppers are interested in the search results they are seeing. These keywords may generate more views and sales than other choices.

Keyword Ideas

In the “Keyword Ideas” table (like the one below), you’ll see the keyword’s most popular related tags alongside their search data. Use this table to find strong keywords to add to your listings.

Screenshot of the "Keyword Ideas" table in Keyword Tool, providing possible tag ideas
In the “Keyword Ideas” table below, you’ll see the keyword’s most popular related tags alongside their search data.

DON’T Use One-Word Tags, if Possible

What’s so bad about one-word tags, you ask? Well, nothing is inherently “bad” about them. However, one-word tags tend to be less effective for two reasons. One, MANY other shops are using them. This means that many one-word tags have a very high level of competition on Etsy. These “saturated” tags are not likely to help your listings get found in search results.

Secondly, shoppers who search one-word terms tend not to know specifically what they are looking for. Consequently, the chances of a shopper clicking a listing in one of these searches is very low. This means that listings that rely on one-word tags to be found likely have poor conversion rates. In other words, they are less likely to be purchased.

Long-Tail Keywords

Even though long-tail keywords tend to be searched less often, they generally have a higher conversion rate. Long-tail keywords are descriptive phrases such as “925 sterling silver ring.” Typically, they consist of several words that “niche down” a search. These words may denote a particular style, material, size, purpose, event, or recipient. It’s common for shoppers to begin their search with a broad keyword like “ring” or “gift.” Then, as the person gets a clearer picture of what they want, the keywords they use become more specific. eRank recommends using these longer, more descriptive keywords whenever possible.

It’s also important to note that long-tail keywords are made up of broad keywords. Therefore, Etsy’s algorithm shows your listing to the large pool of people who are browsing with one-word keywords as well as the smaller group who know what they want to buy.

eRank’s Health Check Report

eRank’s Health Check Report shows you which of your listings are missing tags or images. It also lets you know which listings contain spelling issues and one-word tags. Use this feature to find listings in your shop that may need some additional work to perfect their SEO. As you find better tags for your Etsy listings, you can gradually replace the one-word tags this tool finds.

eRank’s Health Check Report shows you which of your listings are missing tags or images. It also lets you know which listings contain spelling issues and one-word tags.

DO Use Tags That Successful Competitors Use

Want to assemble a strong set of “tried and true” tags for your listings? Check out the top-selling shops within your brand’s niche! Multiple factors can determine whether or not a shop thrives on Etsy. However, having solid SEO is the foundation for success.

eRank’s Top Sellers ranks Etsy’s top-selling shops by their total volume of sales. This tool provides the ability for you to browse by country, category, and year opened. Use this feature to gain inspiration from successful shops in your category. View their total sales and monthly sales over the past 15 months.

Click any shop’s name to analyze their tags and study their recent listings using the Shop Info feature. Click any tag to open the Keyword Tool and perform a detailed analysis of the top 100 listings found in Etsy search results for that particular keyword. Do you see any tags that might work for your items? If so, do those tags have high search volumes and low competition levels?

Screenshot of the top row of the "Listings" section for a shop in eRank's Shop Info tool showing the Etsy listing title and tags
Click any shop’s name to analyze their tags and study their recent listings using the Shop Info feature.

DON’T Copy and Paste Tags Into Your Listing Descriptions

You’ve found some relevant popular keywords with appropriate competition levels for your listings and added as many as possible to their tags. Include every keyword from your listing title in your tags. However, most likely, not all tags will appear in your listing title.

But should you copy and paste your keyword tags directly into your listing descriptions as well? Well, no, not in the way that you’re thinking. You may occasionally encounter an Etsy listing with tags that the seller pasted into the description. Perhaps in a cluster at the top. This is called “keyword stuffing.”

eRank does not recommend this practice because it looks unprofessional. And, more importantly, it doesn’t help shoppers understand what you’re selling. Instead, try working in some of the keywords you found in a way that looks “natural.” That is, incorporate them in complete sentences that accurately describe the item.

Want to continue to develop your items’ SEO? Use eRank’s Listing Audit tool to perform a comprehensive audit of any listing and see how well it complies with the guidelines in Etsy’s The Ultimate Guide to Etsy Search and Google Search Essentials. This feature provides a thorough analysis of a listing’s title, stats, attributes, tags, description, and more. The audit divides its results into sections, making it easy for you to assess each component of the listing and learn the basics of SEO.

Find High-Performing Keywords for Your Listings

Turn powerful, long‑tail keyword tags into your shop’s secret sauce. Every time you tag a listing with a high‑performing phrase, you teach Etsy exactly who should see your products, boosting your chances of landing in more search results. Keep this checklist at your side as you research new tags, update old ones, and watch your visibility—and sales—climb!

Whether you’re a seasoned Etsy seller or just starting a shop, it’s important to learn how to drive traffic to your business. For Etsy and other platforms, there are three main traffic sources: internal, external, and paid. Each has their own benefits and best practices, so let’s dive in and learn how you can set your shop up for success by using any or all of these pathways.

Internal Traffic Sources

Internal traffic refers to shoppers already browsing within the Etsy marketplace. Whether they’re searching with the Etsy search bar or revisiting their favorites, these visitors come to your shop directly from Etsy. To attract them, focus on optimizing your listings and shop for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and quality. Use relevant keywords, upload high-quality photos, and write clear, informative product descriptions to increase your chances of matching and ranking in search results. eRank’s Health Check tool makes this easier by scanning your listings for common issues like spelling mistakes, missing photos, or unused tag slots so that you can fix them quickly and improve your visibility.

If you’re new to SEO or want to learn more about how to optimize your listings, check out eRank’s blog post How Etsy SEO Works: A Beginner’s Guide, as well as Etsy’s Ultimate Guide to Etsy Search.

External Traffic Sources

External traffic includes visitors who arrive at your shop from outside of Etsy. They may come from sources like social media, email lists, or search engines such as Google. To attract this traffic, follow Etsy’s best practices for Google optimization. These include:

  • Using clean, single-image thumbnails instead of collages or text overlays
  • Placing the most relevant keywords at the beginning of your listing titles
  • Writing naturally and avoiding keyword stuffing

Learn more tips from Etsy by reading The Beginner’s Guide to Google SEO.

Sellers can also join Etsy’s Share & Save program, which rewards you when shoppers use your unique link to visit your shop and make a purchase. These external traffic sales can also improve your internal Etsy traffic, since every sale helps boost a listing’s quality score. If you haven’t signed up for Etsy’s Share & Save program, learn how to sign up and leverage this feature for your business with Etsy’s Share & Save Program: Boost Your Shop’s Visibility.

Paid Traffic Sources

Etsy offers two types of paid advertising: offsite ads and on-site Etsy ads. Offsite ads are optional for most new shops. Etsy promotes your listings on external platforms such as Google and charges a 15% fee on any sales that result from those ads. However, once your shop reaches $10,000 in sales within a 12-month period, offsite ads become mandatory, and the fee drops to 12%.

Etsy ads are internal, paid placements within the Etsy marketplace. You can opt in anytime and set a daily budget to have your listings appear in sponsored spots in search results. Every shop is different, so it’s important to calculate an ad budget that works for your business. eRank’s ROI Calculator can help you estimate how much you can comfortably spend. Keep in mind that sales aren’t guaranteed. Be sure to check out our blog post Are Etsy Ads Worth It in 2025? for a deeper look at what to consider before turning them on.

Bring More Eyes (and Buyers) to Your Etsy Shop

Driving traffic doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Whether you’re attracting browsers already on Etsy, connecting with shoppers through social media, or testing out paid advertising, every type of traffic has the potential to grow your business. The key is knowing how to use them strategically and staying flexible as your shop evolves.

Each serves a unique purpose in helping your listings appear in search results, but the true power lies in combining them strategically to maximize visibility and reach.

Query Matching

Query matching is the first step in how Etsy determines which listings to display in search results. For example, if a customer searches for “cat coffee mug,” Etsy scans the titles, tags, categories, and attributes of all available listings to identify those containing the full keyword phrase “cat coffee mug” or its individual components (“cat,” “coffee,” and “mug”). Once matching listings are identified, they proceed through Etsy’s ranking algorithm for further evaluation.

To increase your chances of being included in this process, use a variety of relevant keywords in your listings. A diverse keyword strategy ensures Etsy has more opportunities to match your listings with buyer searches.

Exact Matching

When a listing contains a keyword in the exact order a buyer enters into the search bar, it’s considered an exact match. For instance, if a buyer searches for “cat coffee mug” and a listing includes the tag “cat coffee mug,” it qualifies as an exact match.

Exact match keywords can appear in the title, tags, categories, or attributes of a listing. However, placing long-tail keywords in the title can be especially effective due to the greater character space available. Shows if a buyer queried "cat coffee mug," listing containing "cat coffee mug" would be an exact match but "cat mug" would not be an exact match.

Exact matches signal to Etsy that your listing closely aligns with what the buyer is searching for, which can potentially boost its ranking in search results. Learn more about how Etsy evaluates exact matches in their article How Etsy Search Works.

Broad Matching

Broad matching offers more flexibility compared to exact matching. It occurs when a listing includes some or all of the words in a buyer’s search query, even if they are not in the same order. For example, if a shopper searches for “cat coffee mug,” a listing with the keyword “cat mug” would be considered a broad match.

Broad matching is easier to achieve on Etsy because the platform scans all terms across the title, tags, categories, and attributes of a listing. Since many categories and attributes consist of single words, broad matching naturally allows for greater keyword variety. This flexibility makes it an essential component of your SEO strategy, complementing the precision of exact matches to maximize your listing’s reach.

Example Title Listing

Let’s explore a sample listing title to better understand how exact and broad keyword matches work in practice:

The first is "Exact Match: Uses words that are directly next to each other in the same order written" with a bulleted list of seven examples: Funny Cat Mug, Gift for Cat Mom, Coffee Mug, Home Office, Cat Mom, Cat Mug, and Mug for Home Office. Second column is "Broad Match: Uses all terms mixed and matched in any and all possible order" with a bulleted list of seven examples: Funny Mug, Cat Grandma, Ceramic Mug, Ceramic Cat Mug, Funny Gift for Cat Mom, Mug for Grandma, and Office Coffee Mug.
