Every January, we see a good amount of turnover in every Top 20 list. It’s the rapid shift from holiday shopping to shopping for Valentine’s Day. Still loads of gift searches though! All jockeying for position at the top – and increasingly, they need to compete with Etsy’s enticing homepage promos.

Let’s see which are which, shall we?
What’s new Month on Month to your Top 20 Etsy keywords
We always start with the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. These were the shopper searches that climbed highest fastest most recently. Back in November, you had 13 new Month on Month, seven of them screamers. (So-called because they scream to the top seemingly out of nowhere. Just the month before, they hadn’t even cracked the Top 1000.) Pretty sure seven screamers was a record.
December’s Top 20 was comparatively calm. Just nine climbers and only three of them screamers. More than the US or UK had, but way better than seven! And now? Same as November’s: your climber count is back up to 13. But fewer screamers; only four. (And this month, it’s the UK’s turn to have seven screamers.)
In order by current rank, here are your January climbers, their previous rank (if any) shown last.
No. 1 gift for him, up from #21
No. 4 housewarming gift (screamer; didn’t make December’s Top 1000)
No. 5 necklace, up from #46
No. 7 galentine gift (screamer)
No. 8 personalized decor gift (screamer)
No. 9 anime, up from #70
No. 11 earrings, up from #38
No. 13 bracelet, up from #52
No. 15 keychain, up from #34
No. 16 valentines gift for him (screamer)
No. 17 valentine (screamer)
No. 18 digital, up from #29
No. 19 wallet, up from #23
Way too many to cover here; we know you’re busy. So let’s do only the most interesting. That will leave time at the end for your insider Monthly CTR Roundup. If you’re new, for these we analyze what your Top 250 keywords tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy Canada now.
Ranked 4th: housewarming gift
The US and UK both had this same screamer. Here is your data.

“Housewarming gift” got zero searches this past December; it had 3,750 back in December of 2023. Then that January, it dropped to 1,200, and down to 50 in February. Back up to 2,250 in March but from there, it hasn’t risen above 1,500 – until now.
Odd. Shouldn’t this be a fairly steady year-round regular like “birthday gift” and “baby gift”? Which is why we think Etsy promos are behind the months with higher search volumes and clicks. And that affects the stats’ averages. So, when assessing them, just keep in mind the four months with zero to 50 searches.
As for gauging how it’s selling, housewarming gift’s average click-through rate is 91%; for January it’s 90%. Not bad at all; Canadian shoppers are definitely interested. And eRank’s Trend Alert banner tells us this keyword is also popular this week (through February 8).
TL;DR: sure, use this keyword in your listings, but don’t bother trying to rank for it. Too much competition from your fellow Canadian sellers vying for too small a prize.
Ranked 7th: galentine gift
While “galentine gift” had no search volume at all before now, “galentine” did make last January’s list at #531.

Now, this one we do think is worth adding to a Keyword List to optimize your listings for next year. Why? First: competition is at such an accessible level: fewer than 2,000 listings. And it’s got a 107% CTR, both 12-mo and for January; this suggests solid “purchase intent.”
New to selling online? On ecommerce sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs are an indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one who’s still just browsing).
And Etsy’s certainly keen on it. Did you happen to notice it, right at the very top of your Etsy homepage? Here’s that screenshot again. This time, we circled “Galentine Gifts.”

Etsy has ALL the data; it’s not likely to waste this prime a spot to showcase a dud.
Speaking of duds, we’re going to skip “personalized decor gift.” It’s another screamer the US and UK also had, and your data looks like theirs. Which is to say, a single-month spike with weak CTRs yet weirdly strong competition.
Ranked 11th: earrings, up from #38
“Earrings” is the one search that never leaves the US Top 20. Yours though dropped out of your Top 20 twice this past year: in September and December. But thanks to Valentine’s (and Galentine’s) Day shopping, it’s back.

That Trend Alert banner tells us “earrings” searches are popular now too. But wow, this keyword is undeniably not what it was. And that’s surprising. Because we expect style trends like “minimalist” and “mid century modern” to wax and wane. But not such a jewelry staple as earrings.
And while its Average CTR is 107%, when calculated for January its monthly CTR is a woeful 74%. For Etsy, that’s low. Third-lowest in this month’s Top 20, in fact. So we’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Meanwhile, you know what might be looking more promising than earrings?
Ranked 13th: bracelet, up from #52
As we just mentioned, “earrings” has the third-lowest monthly CTR in January’s Top 20. “Bracelet” has the third-highest.

As for that freakish spike it had last year in January: most likely due to an Etsy promo. Because, apart from that spike, its search volume has been reasonably stable. And while bracelet’s Average CTR is 10% lower than earrings,’ its current monthly CTR is 119%. That’s 45% higher than earrings has. (By the way, “ring” is right behind bracelet with a January CTR of 117%. Rings are always popular with Canadian shoppers!)
Ranked 17th: valentines
The highest monthly CTR for January though belongs to “valentines”: 149%!

This keyword did do much better last year. For January, it’s down 44% Year on Year. But gosh it’s got lovely CTRs!
Ranked 19th: wallet, up from #23
Last one!

Mostly, we’re showing you this so you can see how well “wallet” does ahead of every gift-giving holiday. Searches rise ahead of Mother’s Day, “Dads and Grads” (Father’s Day and Graduation gifts), Christmas, Valentine’s Day. We think wallets are a popular buy for men, for whom gifts can be challenging to choose. Did you notice your top search this January is “gift for him”? (Lol, “gift for her” ranks #252).
Opportunity?
Only 14,377 Canadian Etsy seller listings are using this term. For such a broad search as “wallet,” that’s low. So if you’re here looking for products to sell on Etsy, this one’s worth researching. Because 114% is certainly a handsome Average CTR rate, indicating these probably sell well.
And speaking of CTRs, it’s time for your Monthly CTR Roundup! We’ll analyze your Top 250 keywords to determine which have the highest CTRs for January. Are you here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now? Then this lightning round is for you!
Roundup: Canada’s top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now
Of all the marketplaces we cover, Etsy has the most keywords with high CTRs. Even on Etsy though, CTRs above 125% are rare. Keep in mind too that these calculations are drawn exclusively from their January data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, many of these keywords should still be popular with shoppers now. Add any Valentine-related searches to a Keyword List to revisit ahead of 2025’s holiday shopping season.
A word of caution before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be protected by intellectual property rights or prohibited by Etsy, please look before you leap!

Ranking 151-200

At #170 is telecaster body white (148%). Then at #172-175, yet another quartet: twitch overlay (148%), warhammer, venom (148%), and yarn (147%). Skip one and there’s a pair, both with 148% CTRs: #177-178 bingo and chrome hearts ring. Again skip one and there’s another with 148%: #180 alexandrite.
The next is the pair at #185-186: therian and glass; the latter has 148%. And all the rest of the qualifiers in this group have 147%+ CTRs! At #188 personalized shirt, then the trio at #192-194: vintage home, vintage decor, top selling t shirts. Then #197 sapphire, and #199 beaded curtain.
Ranking 201-250
All those have made it look easy! It isn’t, and from here, there are far fewer. The first is #210 pink with 148%. The next has 147%, it’s #225 racoon [sic]. And then, only two more in the Top 250: #246 amethyst with 146%, and #248 pottery with 142%.
We hope some of these prove to be profitable leads for you!
