What’s new Month on Month to your Top 20 Etsy keywords

We always focus our analysis on the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. We do this because these shopper searches have been climbing highest the fastest. So, what’s new for you this month? In terms of Top 20 turnover, lots! In fact, so much so, and for so many months in a row, we’re changing our Etsy benchmarks. For all four of our top countries we report on here.

It used to be that we’d occasionally see Top 20 keyword turnover as low as five new Month on Month. And conversely, that nine+ new keywords meant considerable volatility. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before. Now though? Having nine new is the new normal.

For October, you have 11 shopper searches in your Top 20 that didn’t make September’s Top 20. But no screamers! In September, four of your 13 climbers were screamers. So-called because they seem to scream to the top out of nowhere. Those hadn’t ranked in August’s Top 1000 at all.

In September, your top screamer took third place, “adult halloween costume.” That continued to do well; it ranks #22 now. But the next highest-ranked screamer was “pet costume.” And here’s how that one looks now.

Update: this was September’s 7th-ranked keyword, “pet costume”

Oh dear.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Canada’s keyword stats on Etsy for “pet costume.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

But it does provide a nice demonstration of why we caution not to act on sudden spikes like this. Which screamers often are: single-month spikes. And so we’re calling your 11 screamer-free October climbers within the (new) nicely normal range. Especially given that we’re in the annual upheaval of Halloween and Christmas!

So without further ado, let’s get to them, shall we?

October’s climbers

Here are your 11 climbers, listed in order with their current rank first.

#2 christmas, up from #394

#5 wall decor, up from #41

#9 earrings, up from #57

#10 art, up from #55

#11 clothing, up from #876

#12 sweatshirt, up from #102

#13 dress, up from #878

#14 poster, up from #36

#16 prints, up from #72

#19 womens clothing, up from #119

#20 crystals, up from #397

Now, those of you who’ve been with us awhile may remember this. How, once upon a time, Canada’s Top 20 conformed closely with the US Top 20. That is no longer true. Instead, it’s the UK list which month by month has drawn closer to the US list. They shared three Top 20 climbers this month: personalized gift; halloween decor; wall decor.

For you, “personalized gift” ranks #46, and “halloween decor” is all the way down at #315. You do share one climber: “wall decor.” But otherwise, Canada, you are clearly going your own way. And a couple of these new climbers really surprised us. And we’ll get to those.

But given how many you have, plus how busy you must be, we’ll skip your frequent flyers. Because we want to leave time at the end for another “High-CTR Roundup” like we did for you last month. (If you’re new, we’ll explain more about that in a bit.) Meanwhile, let’s do just your climbers that leapfrogged the most in rank.

Ranking 2nd: christmas, up from #394

The US and UK both had “christmas” as a climber in their September Top 20 lists. But with all your September climbers and screamers, we didn’t notice it was missing from yours. And not only that, but that it was still ranking so low! So we’re eager to have a look.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “christmas.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canada’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The bright-green banner indicates it’s still popular with Canadian shoppers now (November 6).
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “christmas.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canada’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The bright-green banner indicates it’s still popular with Canadian shoppers now (November 6).

Indeed, “christmas” is running late for Etsy Canada this year! In August it was down by 69% Year on Year. By September, it was down by 91%! Now, it’s only down 54%. And of course, Month on Month it’s nicely up: by 1000%, in fact. But what the heck?

On the other hand, it’s got a lovely Average CTR. (Are you reading along on a small screen? Its Average CTR – Click-Through Rate – is 114%.) And especially for a seasonal keyword and given that the stat’s a 12-mo average, 114% is quite good.

Ranking 11th: clothing, up from #876

Like “christmas,” clothing is another ridiculously broad keyword. Which is to say, no mere mortal can rank for it. Nevertheless, it’s been popular among our Top 4 Etsy countries we report on here. Back in September, “clothing” ranked in both the US and UK Top 200, and in Australia it ranked 23rd. We were surprised to find it ranked so low for you. Guess we’re just not used to Canada being an outlier! Let’s see how it’s doing for you now.

No bright green “trending now” banner here. And Year on Year, “clothing” is down 50%. But once again, what a nice Average CTR it has: 119%! And for those of you who are new, either to eRank or Etsy, here’s a tip. On shopping sites, CTRs are an indicator of purchase intent.

Click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. We care about these stats because CTRs signal purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).

Of all the top marketplaces, Etsy has the most shopper searches with high CTRs. As for why? We eRank data geeks have our theories, but suffice to say: even on Etsy, a CTR of 119% is high. And speaking of high, check out the spike (above right) that “clothing” had last November: nearly 59,000 searches! For all of you in this category, we’ll be hoping for a repeat.

Ranking 13th: dress, up from #878

More clothing! But unlike “clothing,” we don’t recall ever seeing this keyword make a Top 20 list. Especially not at this time of year. And most especially not in The Frozen North: brrr!

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “dress.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canada’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The trend-alert banner indicates it’s still popular with Canadian shoppers now (November 6)

Interesting! “Dress” performs erratically for you, but it does perform! This is, however, the first time since we’ve been reporting on your data that it’s cracked your Top 20. The closest it’s come before was this past June when it ranked #31. “Dress” has got a lovely 106% Average CTR, too. And when we calculate its CTR for just the month of October, it soars to 124%! Very pretty indeed.

And now, the last of your boldest October queue jumpers.

Ranking 20th: crystals, up from #397

“Crystals” is the opposite of dress. This shopper search was on many Top 20 lists just a few years ago.

Backstory: In 2020, a craze for rocks and minerals set in. Mostly, it was driven by interest in their purported metaphysical properties. The pandemic made many of us feel at a loss to protect ourselves. These, now referred to as “crystals,” stepped into that void. Then, gradually, as vaccines were deployed and people were less afraid, the crystal trend cooled.

Well, it’s clearly heating up again for Canadians!

It climbed last fall too, but not until November. There’s no mystery as to why it’s climbing. Some people who got their introduction to rocks and minerals in those years have fallen in love with them. They’ve kept up collecting and we bet will get them as gifts at Christmas. Year on Year, “crystals” are up 115%; MoM they’re up 356%!

Anyone here looking for what to sell on Etsy?

What makes rocks and minerals a promising niche for online sellers is that many specimens are small and light. Given how expensive shipping is in Canada, that’s a big plus. Another is that if the buyer interest in these is as metaphysical crystals, most are inexpensive to buy wholesale. And of course, there are those stats! Average Searches are over 4,000/mo; Average Clicks over 5,500; and an Average CTR of 135%. Calculated just for October, crystals’ CTR is 149%!

So, don’t let the one stat that’s in the red (Etsy Competition) deter you. Because this niche lends itself especially well to niching down.

Are you new? “Niche down” is industry jargon. It’s identifying keywords (and products!) you can rank for high enough in search for yours to be found. Even if you’re new!

Here’s how.

Tutorial: how to use Keyword Tool to niche down

First, we scrolled down the “crystals” results page to its “Keyword Ideas” table. But when we tried our usual filters and sort, we came up empty! The problem?

Keyword Ideas table showing keywords and data related to the Etsy Canada shopper search “crystals.”
Keyword Ideas table showing keywords that include the Etsy Canada shopper search “crystals.”

To include searches with the word “crystals,” we chose the “Phrase” filter. October search volume dropped precipitously! From top-ranked crystals’ 5,700 searches to only 50 for second-ranked “metaphysical crystals”! What to do?

Simple: we changed our filter back to the default for this table. This shows us related terms according to their relevancy to the shopper search “crystals.” Even searches without the word “crystals.” (Keyword Tool’s so smart!)

We didn’t need to scroll down far to discover two specific types of crystals: amethyst and sunstone.

“Amethyst” and “sunstone”

That was simply a variation on niching down. And it’s a good one to add to your product-research skill set. If at first you don’t succeed, try a different filter! Here, we kept the sort the same – by the Search Trend column, to see what’s trending now. And we discovered that in October, “amethyst” had 1,450 searches. Much better! And “sunstone” had 1,050.

Note that the popularity of specific types of crystals, especially in the metaphysical niche, is volatile. Moldavite, for instance, had quite a run in 2022-2023. But genuine moldavite is rare. Whereas amethyst is much easier to get, much less expensive, and it’s currently trending in Canada! In fact, it ranks #301 in your Top 1000 keywords for October. Amethyst also has an Average CTR of 114%. And when calculated for the month of October, that jumps to 146%.

Now, sunstone’s stats could go either way. In 15 months, it’s had only two single-month spikes: 1,150 searches in Sep 2023 and this October’s 1,050. But boy it does have low, low competition! Only 2,237 Canadian listings use this keyword. Maybe add it to a Keyword List; have that tool report on where it goes from here.

Clearly, we could go on and on. But you must be so busy: T’is the season! And we want to see which of your Top 250 searches show the most purchase intent. If you’re here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now, this lightning round is for you.

Roundup! Canada’s top Etsy keywords with 125+% CTRs now

As we mentioned, yes Etsy does have by far the most keywords with high CTRs. But even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% are rare. Note too, these calculations are based on their searches and clicks in October, our last full month of data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, these should be what’s most popular with Canada’s Etsy shoppers now. We hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!

Oh, and one last thing before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether it be prohibited by Etsy or protected by intellectual property rights, please look before you leap!

Ranking 1-50

There are five in your Top 20! That’s up from three last month. Christmas has an October CTR of 150%; then halloween shirtsstickersearrings; and crystals which has 149%. (To keep this as easy to read as possible, we’ll only shout out the sky-high ones.)

In the rest of your Top 50, there’s cat; then shirt (149%). Next, ranking #31-32, a pair: maplestory, and mask; both have CTRs of 149%. Skip one, then another pair with 149% CTRs: canvanike. Skip five then a singleton, tapestry. Next, at #43-44, another pair: phone casebaby gift, both with CTRs over 148%. And closing out October’s Top 50, a trio with 149% CTRs: womens tshirtshalloween jewelry, and helldivers.

Ranking 51-100

That last trio was actually a series of seven in a row, all but one with CTRs above 148%. The remaining four, ranked 51-54: kindle caselionengagement rings (it has 137%, which is still mad high!), and digital planner with 149%. Skip just one and then #56 cosplay also has a 149% CTR. Skip three and there’s yet another with 149%: keycaps. Then #61 one piece; skip five and at #67 is placemat with 148%. Just after that at #69 is scrunchies.

And then there’s not another until the pair at #86-87 wedding band, and wedding invitation; the latter has 148%. The pace picks up again closer to the finish of your Top 100. Ranking #91-95, a whole quartet with CTRs above 140%: 3d printed3dsbrooch, and bracelet men. Then the rest all have 148% CTRs: #96 anime nike, and a pair #98-99 planner, and embosser.

Ranking 101-150

Right off the bat, a pair: #101-102 miata, and magic the gathering, both with CTRs above 147%. And then between #107 and #122, there are six with CTRs of 148%! Attack on titan merchbalaclavachatgptwalletcustom pet portrait; and backpack. Next is cross necklace. Then, ranked between #126 and #150, six with 147+% CTRs: zipposcarf ringsanta beard wigowldeskmat, and silver.

Ranking 151-200

Again, right out of the gate is #151 peridot, and #153 toyota, with both 147% CTRs. But then there’s nothing at 125% or above until a trio at #185-187 wedding dresswall tapestry (150%!) and vintage sweatshirt with 147%. Skip four places and at #192 is engagement gift. And then at #198-199 a final pair, both with 145+% CTRs: diaclone, and deadpool costume kids.

Ranking 201-250

Yet again, straight away we start strong with five in a row, all with CTRs 146+%. They are dog coatbookmarkbookmarksbyblos, and bucket hat. Skip ahead to #211-212 and there’s a pair with 146% CTRs: chrome hearts necklace, and christmas sweatshirt. These are followed by a quartet at #214-217, all above 145%: aquascutumcustom air force 1custom stickers, and custom stamp.

We skip just one then at #219-222 we get yet another a quartet, all with 146% CTRs: colornchicscrochet dollscustom dog coat, and weiss schwarz. Skip one and there’s a trio, all with 146% CTRs: vkeiwarhammer40k, and watches. Skip one and then a pair, both 145+%: tablecloths, and terraforming mars.

At #232-233: moonstone necklace, and mocassin [sic]; the latter has a CTR of 146%. Skip one and then there’s a trio with 146%: moissanite watchzori, and wooden temple. Skip three, then a pair, also with 146% CTRs: roccobarocco, and shaker ornament. And all the rest also have CTRs of 146%. Ranked #245 outsole; and your final pair, #248-249 pads, and stainless steel necklace.
