What’s new Month on Month to the UK’s Top 20 Etsy keywords
As always, we’ll focus our analysis on the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20. We do this because these are the shopper searches that have been climbing highest the fastest. Benchmarks: on Etsy, a turnover rate fewer than five new is stagnant. More than nine suggests considerable volatility. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before.
July was nuts for you guys! You had 15 climbers in July! And six of them were screamers. (So called because they seem to scream to the top out of nowhere.) In fact, your No. 1 keyword in July was a screamer. Let’s take a minute to see how that one is doing now.
Ever see a result like this in a Search Trend line chart? It’s rare! This is what you see if the result is nil. “Bruno mars shirt” went from 31,150 searches in July to zero. And we’re dropping it here as an object lesson. Never jump on a sudden spike like this. Wait and watch it awhile. Add it to a Keyword List; let that tool track it for you.
And phew! Some of that unprecedented (and weird) search activity has settled down since. In August, you had 12 climbers. A lot but after 15, it seems less shocking. And only one screamer. So without further ado, let’s get to them.
August’s climbers and screamers
#2 mugs, up from #24
#3 birthday gift for her, up from #77
#4 tshirt, up from #39
#7 halloween, up from #51
#8 mens clothing, up from #83
#11 lighting, up from #53
#12 earrings, up from #27
#13 deadpool (screamer: not in July’s Top 1000)
#15 bedding, up from #425
#16 art, up from #81
#18 phone case, up from #59
#20 pokemon, up from #37
Too many to talk about! (We know you’re busy.) And two are easy to dispense with. Because we here at eRank are data geeks not lawyers and thus unqualified to give legal advice. But regarding Deadpool and Pokemon, just a word to the wise: “Warning!” (As in our standard disclaimer: Beware of trademarked terms. This report may contain keywords that are trademarked. USPTO Trademark Database”)
Others we can skip are your frequent flyers – the keywords that are regulars on your Top 20 lists. Like mugs and earrings. Those two just got nudged out by July’s unprecedented 15 climbers.
Which leaves us with eight to investigate. Let’s!
Ranking 3rd: birthday gift for her, up from #77
The US had this same climber. So we knew to go straight to Etsy’s UK homepage in incognito mode. And sure enough: behold!
Just as we expected to see (it was the same for the US): Etsy’s promoting birthday gifts. And it’s working!
We’re including the pie chart to show that you have a larger slice than is typical for you: 20.9%. And on the left, you can see that “birthday gift for her” is currently at a 15-mo high. And it’s quite a high! Year on Year, it’s up by, geez Louise: 446%! Thanks, Etsy!
Ranking 4th: tshirt, up from #39
Conversely, “tshirt” had its 15-mo high 15 months ago!
That said, it’s got our bright green banner waving that it’s been popular with you lot this past week. And Year on Year, August 2023 v August 2024, it’s up 62%. Looks healthy.
Ranking 7th: halloween, up from #51
We recall when first starting to do these UK reports that Halloween seemed not quite as epic there? At least when compared with the US, where there are lots of people into it year round! And we don’t mean Goths. Rather, Halloween fans; it’s its own thing. Have a gander: here’s US data for the keyword “halloween.”
As you can see, even in February, its lowest ebb in 15 months, “halloween” still got 7,570 searches. Compare that with your data.
Your 15-mo low for “halloween” search volume was in March: 50 searches. But you know what? Otherwise, your trend line tracks pretty closely with the US’s. And your Keyword Statistics look a lot better in two ways. This search has a better Average CTR (click-through rate), 110% to their 101%. And a way better figure for Etsy Competition. Just over a quarter million UK listings use this keyword – which is a lot. But look at the US figure: well over four million! Now that is scary!
Ranking 8th: mens clothing, up from #83
This search had higher to climb. Notice anything else?
That is a low Average CTR: 78%. And even when calculated for just the month of August, it’s only a bit better: 86%. For Etsy, which has the highest CTRs of any of our top marketplaces, even 86% is on the low side.
Quick tutorial: CTRs and “purchase intent”
New to online selling or eRank?
Click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers using a given keyword clicked on listings in their search results. We care about this because CTRs signal purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).
A comparatively low Average CTR suggests shoppers aren’t clicking much on the search results Etsy serves. One possible cause that we’ve been seeing recently is this.
To get here, first we had to click “Gifts for Him” on the UK homepage, which took us to this page. That other Etsy UK promotion, third-ranked “birthday gift for her,” has a 99% Average CTR, and for August, 103%. But for whatever reason, not as many shoppers clicked listings this promo for Men’s Clothing showed them. No big deal though. “Mens clothing” is too broad a search for mere mortals to rank for anyway.
And speaking of CTRs, we have a treat in store for you! So far, we’ve only been doing roundups of high CTR keywords in our Amazon and eBay reports. Starting this month, we’ll include one for you, here at the end. Let us know if you like it! If they work for you, we’ll make it a regular feature.
Ranking 11th: lighting, up from #53
Well: the good news is that “lighting” is way up Year on Year: by 380%. And it’s got that green banner telling us that lighting is popular now.
But ouch! That Average CTR: only 74%. So we checked and yep: at the top of the UK homepage, just under Halloween, is this.
To be clear, Etsy has ever so much data! So they know what they’re doing. Rather, it’s likely that lighting’s low CTR reflects something else, literally. Many shoppers who clicked that promo were on Etsy that day for something else. Hopefully, they’ll be back when they’re shopping for lighting.
Ranking 15th: bedding, up from #425
See what’s just to the right of Vintage Lighting in that screenshot above? “Striped Bedding.” Might the same apply? Have a look.
Just like “lighting,” it’s got our banner indicating that bedding’s popular with UK shoppers now. But that Average CTR: it’s only 63%! That said, when calculated just for August, it’s 100%. So there is purchase intent right now. If you’ve got it, get it listed! Last year it didn’t begin climbing until October and had its 15-mo peak in January. Are we seeing an early start?
Ranking 16th: art, up from #81
Better! At least in terms of its Average CTR: 106%.
Of course, art is also the poster child for “broad keyword.” You’ll need to niche down.
New to eRank? “Niche down” means identifying products you can rank for high enough in search for yours to be found. Here’s how to niche down. Enter a broad keyword (say, “wall art”) in Keyword Tool, then scroll down to the Keyword Ideas table. There you’ll find lots of ways to filter and sort your results to reveal opportunities. Here’s a short YouTube video we made to show you how.
Speaking of, “wall art” is one of your most frequent Top 20 frequent flyers. It’s your No. 1 now and it ranked No. 2 in your 2024 second quarter. Art is very popular indeed with the UK’s Etsy shoppers. You know the interest is there. You just have to research a bit to identify a niche product with good purchase intent. Let’s see if we can help you with that in just a bit! Right after we do this last climber, “phone case.”
Ranking 18th: phone case, up from #59
Yet another with our “popular now” banner and a lower-than-average Average CTR: 87%.
Anyone happen to see “phone case” being promoted on the Etsy UK homepage? This has the hallmarks. Phone cases do make ideal affordable gifts, and it’s an item that’s fun to change up. Something new for the new school year? For the seasonal change to autumn? Or to fit a new phone? Looks like Google released three Pixel 9 models in August.
But with 82,644 UK listings using this keyword, you’ll need to niche down in any case (ouch). Let’s see if there are any phone-case related searches in your Top 250 with better CTRs, shall we?
Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now
We’ll end with our insider’s roundup of the most promising keywords. That is, a list of the UK’s most-searched keywords on Etsy that also have the highest CTRs. Now, even on Etsy, CTRs above 125% are rare. So these keywords should have the most purchase intent with UK shoppers.
We expect that most of these shopper searches will be too competitive for small shops to rank for. So if you’re researching products to sell, just use Keyword Tool to niche down from these. Also note that these calculations are based on their August 2024 search volume and clicks. Which means that regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs may be, these keywords are hot right now. We hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!
