What’s new Month on Month in your Top 20

Well, well: this is a lovely change! You’ve got only seven keywords on this Top 20 that weren’t on your last Top 20. In November, you had 15 new Month on Month! Two of which were screamers. (So called because they scream to the top seemingly out of nowhere. These didn’t manage to crack even the Top 1000 the previous month.) For December, you’re screamer-free!

We always begin our analysis with the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. We do this because in just a month these shopper searches leapfrogged the most.

Of course, in November there were holiday-related searches we only see this time of year. That contributed to its high climber count. For instance, two of your November climbers were “christmas ornaments” and “advent calendar.” And all five of November’s Top Five had the word “gift.”

December is the same, only more so: its Top Six shopper searches have the word “gift.” In all, half of December’s Top 20 have “gift,” two more than November’s. Without further ado then, here are December’s climbers in current rank order, their former rank last.

#8 gift for him, up from #224 (but “gifts for him” ranked #3)

#10 necklace, up from #49

#13 stickers, up from #34

#15 baby gift, up from #47

#16 grandma gift, up from #67

#17 mugs, up from #52 (but “mug” ranked #40)

#18 signs, up from #88

The US has three of these climbers too.

Ranking 8th: gift for him, up from #224

Year on Year, “gift for him” is down 60%… but wait!

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “gift for him” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The pale-green banner indicates it’s popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Jan. 11). NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

When we tick “Include Near Matches” to fold in the plural’s data, it’s only down 37%. The plural ranked third in November, and still ranks 12th now. And the combined Average CTR (click-through rate) is better too: 94%. Furthermore, “gift for him” is still trending now. Valentine gifts?

Overall then, we’d say this is still a healthy keyword. Its Year-on-Year drop could be due to shoppers preferring to start with a more specific search. And given that no mere mortal can rank on Etsy for “gift for him,” why waste a tag? We sellers should be choosing a more specific keyword too!

Ranking 10th: necklace, up from #49

“Necklace” didn’t have nearly as far to climb as “gift for him.” This shopper search is a frequent flyer on your Top 20 lists year round.

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “necklace” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The trend alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Jan. 10).

It’s also doing better Year on Year: down just 10%. That is not concerning; again, the dip could be ascribed to shoppers starting with a more specific search. Rather than, say, the broad terms “gift for him” or “necklace,” many shoppers entered “mens necklace.” That search ranks #170; Year on Year it’s up 48% with an Average CTR of 115%! And when calculated for December, its monthly CTR is 144%: now, that’s some lovely purchase intent!

Are you new to selling online? On marketplace sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs can be an indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one who’s still just browsing).

When we finish with these climbers, we’ll do another of our insiders’ CTR Roundups for you. New here? For these we analyze what your current top searches tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy UK now.

Ranking 13th: stickers, up from #34

Wow: look at “stickers!”

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “stickers” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The trend alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Jan. 10).

Year on Year, it’s got about the same number of searches. And sticks more consistently above 10,000 searches/mo than most. In 15 months, only once did “stickers” dip below 10,000 – and that just down to 9,650. Which outdoes even your trusty “mugs.” (We’ll get to mugs in a bit.) And at 110%, stickers’ Average CTR is the clear champion of these climbers.

Ranking 15th: baby gift, up from #47

Gracious, this has to be up for Spike of the Month!

Bet Etsy’s been promoting this on its UK homepage. And for the US, too: its search trend line shot up a lot like yours. But there, “baby gift” is up Year on Year by 459%. Yours is up 1,606%!

(Update: yep. We opened an incognito window on Etsy’s UK homepage. Right at the top, a Baby Gifts promo.)

We’ll keep an eye on this one. Its Average CTR is quite good; its December CTR only slightly lower. Worth adding to a Keyword List.

Ranking 16th: grandma gift, up from #67

“Grandma gift” has a spike nearly as high. As it does in the US: they have this same December climber.

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “grandma gift” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The trend alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Jan. 11).

And theirs has the same trend alert banner. In writing that report, we ascribed its popularity continuing into January to Valentine gifts for grandmas. But now we’re seeing that you’ve got the trending-now banner for baby gifts also. Do grandmas and babies get Valentine’s gifts in the UK? Guess we’ll see how these do the rest of the month and get back to you on that.

Unlike “baby gifts,” neither your Etsy homepage nor the US homepage has a promo for grandma gifts. Not even when we drilled down a ways. Maybe there was in November and December though: anyone recall seeing one? Because in December, Year on Year “grandma gift” was up 429%. And in November, it was up 875%.

Happy for grandmas! We’re all for grandmas. It’s just the suddenness of popularity we find a trifle odd.

Ranking 17th: mugs, up from #52

Either “mug” or “mugs” and sometimes both are a fixture on your Top 20 lists.

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “mugs” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The trend alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Jan. 10).
On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “mugs” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The trend alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Jan. 10).

And “mugs” is up a healthy slug Year on Year: 43%! (As is the combined search, mug + mugs: those got 48,650 searches in December, up YoY by 20%.) And that’s another honey of an Average CTR: 104%!

Ranking 18th: signs, up from #88

The US had this same climber too. We were a little surprised. It didn’t seem all that Christmas-y a keyword to fight through to the top in December. But then we checked Etsy’s US homepage. And we found the same clue on yours.

Screenshot taken 01/09/2025 of Etsy’s UK homepage featuring a promo for signs.

So signs are probably up this much because Etsy is promoting them on the US and UK homepages. Right there beside “wall decor,” which is always popular.

But no “trend alert” banner for this climber. According to interior designers opining online, word signs (“live laugh love”) are no longer in style. Especially not as wall decor. And going by that 63% Average CTR, UK shoppers appear to agree. When calculated for December, signs’ monthly CTR is even worse: 55% – by far the lowest in your Top 20.

And on that subject: time for your Monthly CTR Roundup! We’ll analyze the UK’s top Etsy keywords to find the highest CTRs in December, our last full month of data. Are you here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now? Then this lightning round is for you!

Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now

Of the top online marketplaces we cover, Etsy has the most keywords with high CTRs. That said, even on Etsy, CTRs above 125% are rare. We did these calculations based exclusively on their December search volume and clicks. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, some of these keywords should still be popular with shoppers now. And the seasonal and gift searches are worth adding to a Keyword List to revisit ahead of 2025’s holiday shopping season.

One last thing before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be protected by intellectual property rights or prohibited by Etsy, please look before you leap!

Ranking 1-50

Interesting! There are no keywords in your Top 20 that qualify. But that was the case for you back in November too. In this Top 20, only two are above 100%: #9 arcane with a December CTR of 108%. And #11 earrings, with 101%. (From here, CTRs have to be at least 125%. And for readability, we’ll only shout out individual CTRs of 140% and up. Because that’s sky-high!)

Moving on, the first to meet our criteria is the pair at #30-31: bookmark (150% CTR!) and christmas card. Then we need to jump to the end of this section. But it’s a pair: #49-50 funny gifts and keycaps, the latter another with a CTR of 150%.

Ranking 51-100

At #52 is taylor swift; skip one and at #54 there’s 3d printed. Next is #58 giftsforwomen (yep, all one word) with 150%! Skip five and at #64-66 you have a trio, all with CTRs above 149%: personalised stocking, stl, and skyrim.

Skip ahead six more for #73 league of legends; it has 141%. And then the next two both have CTRs of 150%: #75 funny secret santa gifts and #77 dice. After that, there’s a pair, also with 150% CTRs: #83-84 jewelry box and vegan. The last in this section is #95 phone case.

Ranking 101-150

First here is #106 cat mug with a December CTR of 150%, then #110 3d print. Skip four and you have three in a row, all above 149%! #115 incense holder and at #117-118 snoopy and book embosser. Skip a bunch more for #127 mens bracelet, and #132 crystals with 143%.

Then all the rest of the qualifiers in this section have CTRs above 149%! The pair at #134-135: coffee and dice tower; another pair at #144-145: dandadan and cyberpunk; and then #147 shoes.

Ranking 151-200

The first of this group is #161 frog; it’s got a CTR of 142%. Skip ahead just a few and there’s #166 album poster with 149%. Skip a few more and there’s a pair: #171-172 mens necklace (144%) and book (149%). Next is #173 hamper for her, then at #177-178 another pair, both with 150%: custom and rude xmas jumper.

At #181-184, a quartet of qualifiers, the first three of which have 149% CTRs: rugs, rangers, rome, and 3d printing. Skip just one and there’s a pair, both with 149% CTRs: #186-187 plant and dice tray. Skip ahead three for another quartet, all four with 149% CTRs! #191-194 chocolate, vampire, kuromi, and blue. And the last in this section is #196 lamp.

Ranking 201-250

This final section is off to a sleepy start: no qualifiers until #219 engagement ring. Then skip ahead to #224 for arcane merch (149% CTR). Skip two and there’s a pair at #227-228: scented candle (149%) and portrait (142%). At #232 you have passport cover and at #235 mama sweatshirt. The last in your Top 250 is #249 sea glass; it has a 149% CTR.

We hope some of these prove to be profitable leads for you. And that this next year is your best yet: Happy New Year, UK sellers!
