What’s new Month on Month to the UK’s Top 20 Etsy keywords

As always, we’ll begin our analysis with what’s on this Top 20 list that was not on last month’s. It’s one indicator of how much instability there is in current trends. Etsy benchmarks: a turnover of fewer than five new is stagnant. More than nine reflects volatility in the Force, lol. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before.

In your last report, you had eight climbers. Just enough to keep things fresh. And only one of those wasn’t at least in your Top 1000 the previous month. And the US had the very same “screamer.” None of which is the case this month!

Now, one way the UK differs from Etsy’s other Top 4 countries is the date you celebrate Mother’s Day. For the rest it’s in May. Therefore, for them March is a month without major gift-buying holidays. So in March we got a clearer overview of what shoppers were searching for on Etsy.

You lot get that opportunity in April. And your Top 20 has a dozen shopper searches new Month on Month, including three screamers! None of which you share with the three the US has. So without further ado, here are your hottest shopper searches.

April’s climbers and screamers

These searches climbed highest the fastest in April. We’ve listed them in rank order with their current rank first.

#4 birthday gift, up from #600

#5 gift for home (didn’t make your last Top 1000)

#7 fallout, up from #144

#8 laser engraving bundle (didn’t make your last Top 1000)

#9 tshirt, back up from #45 yay

#10 furniture, up from #24

#14 taylor swift, up from #25

#16 clothing, up from #184

#17 anniversary gift (didn’t make your last Top 1000)

#18 prints, up from #265

#19 storage organization, up from #114

#20 keycaps, up from #26

Some of these we can see Etsy is promoting. We think every shopper click on one of these Calls to Action (CTAs)  gets recorded as a search. Here for instance is the source of your No. 4 climber “birthday gift” and your #17 screamer “anniversary gift.”

Wondering why these show as plurals on Etsy’s homepage yet in singular form on our Top 20? Because Etsy records them as such. It’s easy to prove: we clicked on the plural “Birthday Gifts” CTA and its landing page showed this.

Yep: it switches to the singular “birthday gift” in both the browser address bar and in Etsy’s search bar. And it does the same exact thing with “Anniversary Gifts.” Why does this matter? It doesn’t! Singular or plural keywords should bring the shopper the same results. In fact, this shows it doesn’t matter to Etsy’s algorithm. And also supports our theory that some of these top-ranked keywords are boosted by Etsy promos. Like this next one.

No. 8 laser engraving bundle

You what mate? For ranking #8th overall, that’s crazy, right? Reminds us of your lone March screamer “14k gold chain necklace.” The one you shared with the US. And which dropped straight back out of both of your Top 1000s this month. Let’s have a look at this new screamer.

We call them screamers because they come screaming out of nowhere to the top. The US Top 1000 does have this new search too, but it’s ranked #105. Whilst Canada? SPOILER ALERT: it’s their No. 1 search! And Australia’s to boot!! Check out this pie chart showing the global distribution of Etsy shoppers using this search.

We don’t even need to check. We are sure this is the most colorful Etsy shopper pie chart we’ve ever seen. Austria and The Netherlands have the largest portions, but it all seems pretty evenly distributed. Suspiciously so?

Be that as it may though, you can’t deny that 150% CTR! Whatever brought 18,600 UK shoppers to Etsy to search for these, they went on to click 27,837 listings. And a 12-mo click-through rate of 150% is powerful indication of purchase intent!

Purchase intent

Are you new to online selling?

Clicks and click-through rates refer to the number of times shoppers using a given keyword click on listings in their search results. We care about these because clicks are among the indicators signaling “purchase intent.” That is, how close a shopper might be to deciding to buy as opposed to one who’s still browsing.

Some clicks we bet were made by people like us, clicking to see what these are! So we’ll save you the click. They are designs to use with laser cutters. Which in turn are used for cutting and engraving materials like metal, wood and acrylic. Now, laser cutting is definitely not a low-barrier passive-income niche! But there’s far less overhead in supplying bundles of digital designs for them.

If Etsy’s AI is promoting these, we figure it has its reasons. However, that one-month spike on the 15-mo Search Trend graph above does give us pause. So, at least for now, we don’t recommend this product as one to jump on just yet. Maybe add it to a Keyword List and let it monitor it for you.

No. 5 gift for home

Speaking of spikes, here’s another of your April screamers.

That spike represents 19,800 UK shopper searches in April. But look what happens if we tick that “Include Near Matches” box on the Keyword Stats chart.

This data is for six searches: gift for home, gift for the home, home gift, gifts for the home, home gifts, and gifts for the home. We talked here in December about “home gift;” ranked 4th, it garnered almost 99,000 searches that month. So if you are using that keyword and your listings are performing well, stick with it. “Home gift” still ranks #23 this month.

Also hot with the UK’s Etsy shoppers now

First, let’s take a quick minute to consider your April No. 1 keyword, “gift.” Remarkably, it garnered close to 77,000 searches in just the one month. Remarkable because No. 2, wall art, only had 38,850. That’s a substantial hike between the two! A year ago in April, your top two searches were 6,000 searches apart. There’s 38,000 between this April’s top two.

And yet, guess what? April 2023’s No. 1 search was also “gift.” (Wall art was No. 5.) So, you had the exact same search in the No. 1 spot exactly a year apart. But in 2023 it had 42,850 searches. Year on Year, “gift” is up 79%!

Think that might have something to do with it?

Round-up of your shopper searches with high CTRs in April 2024

This year we’ve begun wrapping up our Trend Reports with these. Now, you likely won’t be able to rank for the highest of them; many will be too broad. Instead, use those as indicators of what your Etsy shoppers are currently most motivated to buy. (Remember, click-through rates indicate purchase intent.)

Then take the broad searches into Keyword Tool to “niche down.” That is, identify long-tail keywords for products you do have a chance to rank for in search. You can use the same procedure whether you’re researching SEO or products to sell on Etsy. So for those of you who are new to Etsy or eRank, we’ll step you through the first one.

No. 3 stickers

Stickers has an April CTR of 150%! Here it is in Keyword Tool.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “stickers.” The line chart shows its UK shopper search performance over the past 15 months.

As you can see, “stickers” has the green banner alerting us it’s been popular over the past week. Well, we knew that! But it’s got competition from your fellow UK sellers to match!

Tutorial: How to niche down with Keyword Tool

First, tick that “Include Near Matches” box in the top right corner of the Keyword Stats bar chart. Doing so will show us results for singular and plural sticker keywords. Then we’ll scroll down the page to the related-searches table.

This is the default view, and it doesn’t offer much hope, does it? But wait! There is so much you can find just by sorting these related keywords. Have a look.

Here is the same table sorted by the Search Trend column. This shows us keywords that are trending now, in order by current search volume. And that alone changes the Etsy Competition odds considerably! “Pride stickers” had 1,400 searches in April. And wow, check out that Average CTR: 140%! Good to know for next year! Be sure to get them up at least six weeks in advance. And see? Competition on that keyword is in the green: just 3,962.

Next is “bin stickers” with many more months of good search volume: seven with over 1,200 a month. Plus that spike back in February 2023 of 2,250 searches. 12-mo average CTR is 100% and Competition just 1,857. Excellent!

Now, “wall stickers” does have competition in the red: over 69,000 UK sellers are using this keyword. But it’s got quite good stats otherwise. Average Searches are 1,608; Average CTR 112%.

Even “small stickers” could be worth researching. It’s had two months exceeding a thousand searches, and you can always click it to see which of its related searches might have higher CTRs.

Your Top 125 Etsy shopper searches with 125%+ CTRs in April

Click-through rates exceeding 125% are exceedingly good! So these are the best of the best right now. Then, all with 149-150% April CTRs: keycaps, 3d illusion engraving, helldivers, laser engraving file, digital planner, chain. And at #50 garden ornament has 135%.

Note that these CTRs are calculated just for April, which means they’re hot now. Their 12-mo average CTRs will most likely be different. Also, just our customary word to the wise: a handful of these are protected Intellectual Property. But with close to 40 that are not, we hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!
