In the wake of Prime Day
First a bit of backstory. Our first Amazon trend report was in September a year ago. Therefore, early August this year was our first chance to see Prime Day’s impacts on Amazon’s top keywords. Since it’s Amazon’s biggest sale event of the year, we data geeks were excited! (We covered Prime Day in much more depth here.)
As it turned out, we were surprised – even a little disappointed. Because the answer turned out to be: not much changed! July’s top keywords stayed largely the same. The big difference was simply increased search volume.
And in spite of Prime Day, July’s No. 1 search was “the boys” with over two million searches. True, The Boys is one of Amazon Prime Video’s phenoms. Season 4 of The Boys had just debuted in mid-June. The season finale was July 18. So we had expected it to rank high in July.
Backstory: July 2023 vs. July 2024 search volumes – a bit of a mystery!
And its 2,112,720 searches did seem like a lot – until we checked Amazon’s top keywords for July 2023. That Top 1000 list, again despite Prime Day, also had a Prime Video TV series take the top spot. Have a look.
That Jul 2023 spike is “the summer i turned pretty.” And it got close to four million searches!!
Ranked second, “prime day deals today 2023” got 2,769,370 searches. Third place “prime deals of the day today only” had 1,890,490. Next was “monitor,” the first product search. And even in fourth place, it still got well over a million searches.
Compare that search volume with July’s this year. July 2024’s No. 1 search got fewer than half what July 2023’s No. 1 did. July 2024’s No. 2 search was worse. “Laptop” garnered just over a million. Which means that Year on Year, the keyword in second place is down 63%. And by the way, this year the top search related to Prime Day, “prime day deals today 2024,” ranked sixth with just 833,440 searches. Compared with its 2023 counterpart “prime day deals today 2023,” Year on Year its search volume is down by 70%.
TL;DR
Prime Day doesn’t affect the Top 20 Amazon searches much. What does change is search volume: Month on Month (MoM), the Top 20 got a lot more shopper searches in July. However, Year on Year Amazon’s top keywords got notably fewer searches this July than in July 2023.
Will this hold true for the next sale event, Amazon Prime Big Deal Days? Those were recently confirmed for the second week of October. They are being billed as a sneak peak of what Black Friday offers might be. We’ll see.
On to August’s Amazon trends
That Year on Year decline in Top 20 search volume also applies to August. Back in August 2023, the seven highest-ranking keywords each amassed over a million shopper searches. Whereas this August’s No. 1 got just 871,480 searches; No. 7 only had 598,200.
Let’s have a look at that No. 1.
August 2024’s No. 1: laptop
In August, “the boys” dropped from first to sixth place and now “laptop” is No. 1. Here’s a quick peek at it in Keyword Tool.
In August, laptop’s search volume dropped from over a million that it had in July to 871,480. Nothing surprising about that; lots of people shop Prime Day for laptops. And while a year ago in July “laptop” ranked eighth, it had 1,152,760 searches. Year on Year though that’s just ten percent more than this July’s high of 1,037,640. Its rank changed YoY; actual search volume much less so. Interesting.
Now let’s compare August search volumes for laptop: back in August 2023, it ranked fifth with 1,087,690 searches. This August, it’s No. 1 with 871,480 searches. Year on Year, that’s a twenty percent decrease in searches for laptop. Yet even so, it’s got the top spot. When we compare search volumes of Amazon’s August No. 1s Year on Year? That’s a 55% decrease. Huh.
We’re not sure what these Year on Year drops in Top 20 search volumes mean. (We’ve seen it on Etsy too.) Could it be that shoppers are searching for a wider array of items? Being much more specific? Because most of these top keywords are broad. We’ve been tracking this and will keep you apprised.
August 2024’s back to school shopping
While MoM “laptop” is down 14% from July’s peak, it’s still about 8% above where it hovered Feb-Jun. Probably that lift is thanks to back to school shopping. And we think this next one is also related to back to school. Here is “backpack.”
Backpack ranks fifth now, up from 18th in July. You can see on the Search Trend line above right that it peaked these same months last summer. Backpack also had two lesser bumps (still: half a million searches each!) in November and January. For Christmas gifts and then for second semester back to school? Overall, backpack looks like a product worth researching if you’re looking for what sells well on Amazon. And it’s one that even Handmade sellers can get in on.

Amazon’s most popular products: August’s climbers
This is where customarily we start our trend reports! New here? Climbers are what we call current Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. We focus on these because they’re the shopper searches climbing highest the fastest.
Over on Etsy, having nine new MoM is a higher than average rate of change. (That said, Etsy’s had way more lately! For months now, Etsy’s Top 20 lists have had the highest turnover we’ve ever seen there.) Conversely, over the past year Amazon’s Top 20 lists have proved to be far more stable than Etsy’s. Amazon’s typical rate of change is about five searches that weren’t on the previous month’s list. Not even Prime Day shakes it up!
And indeed, Amazon’s August Top 20 has five new. Here they are, listed in order with their current rank first.
#10 office chair, up from #23 in July
#14 water bottle, up from #35
#16 mouse, up from #24
#18 mouse pad, up from #39
#20 paper towels, up from #21
As you can see, none even had far to climb. And these are all what we call “frequent flyers:” they often make Amazon’s Top 20 searches. In fact, we checked Amazon’s top keywords for its second quarter (Apr-Jun). Here’s where these five ranked in Q2.

See? Amazon’s most popular products are remarkably stable compared with Etsy’s. And there is another way Amazon’s top keywords significantly differ from Etsy’s: click-through rates.
Amazon’s CTRs
To save you scrolling up, here again is the data we showed you for August’s No. 1, “laptop.” This time, we’ve circled the Average CTR in red.
For those of you viewing small screen, that Average CTR is just 51%! Seeing one of Amazon’s most popular products with a 12-mo CTR of just 51% can still startle us. Until we remember: a CTR this low is not at all unusual for Amazon. (Incidentally, eBay’s typical CTRs are even worse!) And speaking of even worse, when calculated for the month of August, “laptop” has a CTR of just 48%. And yet it’s August’s No. 1!
Quick tutorial: “purchase intent”
New to online selling? Click-through data reflects how many times shoppers using a given keyword clicked listings in their search results. We care about these stats because clicks and CTRs signal purchase intent. That is, a customer who’s searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).
So next, let’s help you spot which top shopper searches should have the most purchase intent now.
Amazon’s Top 500 keywords with 100%+ CTRs now
Here to learn what’s selling best on Amazon now? Then this insider’s roundup is for you! These click-through rates are drawn exclusively from this past month’s search and click data. Which means they should indicate which searches show the most promising purchase intent with Amazon shoppers now.
Of the Top 500 of Amazon’s most popular products, these all have August CTRs of 100% or higher. (Remember: for Amazon, CTRs this high are crazy high!) And as we go, we’ll shout out the ones with 150% CTRs.
Ranking 1-100
Of this month’s Top 20 Amazon searches, there is only one keyword with a qualifying CTR. It is #8 “the boys” with an August CTR of 103%. Not much we third-party sellers can do with that one. But stick with us! There are some good prospects, including those back to school supplies we mentioned. You can add them to a Keyword List for next year.
Next: #31 shower curtain; #34 mattress; #38 pens; #39 notebook; #46 macbook; #47 owala. Then two with 150% CTRs: #51 pencil case and #55 crocs. Next: #57 shoe rack; #59 pencil pouch; #69 pencils; #70 standing desk; and #98 iphone 13. And that’s it for the Top 100.
Ranking 101-250
We start this group with two in a row: #103 rice cooker, and #104 bed frame. Next, #108 shower caddy; #112 rug; #114 binder; and #118 desk lamp. Then another pair #127 pillow, and #128 hangers. And yet another pair: #133 macbook pro, and #134 trash can.
After those: #139 lunch box; #141 electric bike; #148 bookshelf; #155 toys; #157 luggage. Then #163 colored pencils; #164 floor lamp; #166 stanley; and another pair: #171 macbook air, and with 150% CTR: iphone 13 case. Next are #187 folders; and #189 umbrella. Then, ranking #191-193, three in a row: water flosser; water filter; bookshelf.
Starting out the Top 200 at #201: coffee table; then with a 150% CTR is #203 blackout curtains. Next: #205 yoga mat; and ranking #209-211 another three in a row: command hooks; airtag; iphone 15 case. Then, ranking #214-219, five in a row: mirror, cat food (with 150% CTR!), shelves, wallet, and sunglasses.
At #221-222, another pair: jansport backpack and iphone 12. Then #225 sofa; #227 hair dryer; and ranking #241 is another with a 150% CTR: planner. And we finish out the Top 250 with #247 macbook air 13 inch case.
Ranking 251-500
Our final group begins with #251 roku; #255 anker power bank; #259 monitor arm; #261 tissues; #265 fire tv stick; #267 usa; #270 iphone 14; #279 protein bars; #282 cutting board; #287 nike socks; #289 blanket; and #296 prime.
Starting out the Top 300 is #302 markers. Then #309 bathroom rugs; #313 airpods pro; #323 travel essentials; #342 pull up bar; #347 honey; #354 full size mattress; #358 rings of power; #366 mop; #371 desk mat. Then two in a row: #374 meta quest 3, and #375 kitchen. Next is #377 electric kettle; #381 pixel 9 pro xl case; #383 drone; #386 beauty; #389 ipad 10th generation case; #391 womens tops. Then we close out the Top 300 with four in a row ranking 394-397: pimple patches, notebooks, iphone 14 case, ipad air.
First in the Top 400 ranks #410 bike lock. Then #414 cat tree; #417 surge protector power strip; #419 pepper spray; #423 ring; #433 wall decor; #438 mechanical pencils; #442 can opener; #444 scale; #448 tripod. And ranking #452 halloween. Halloween is August’s No. 2 search on Etsy US: just another way these two platforms differ!
Back to Amazon: #461 planner 20242025; #463 laundry hamper; #464 fish oil; #475 walking pad; #476 pen; #478 ipad pro. Then yay, another with an August CTR of 150%: #487 twister. And finishing out the Top 500, just two more: #489 l shaped desk, and #500 dish drying rack.
Reminders!
We calculated these CTRs using our latest month of data which means they’re hot right now. Their 12-mo average CTRs will likely be different.
Also, our usual words to the wise: a good number of these are trademarked. And others are otherwise off-limits or tricky to sell on Amazon. But a good number are not; we hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!
