Still crazy, Canada – but not as wild as back in July!

As always, we’ll base our analysis on the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20. These are the Canadian shopper searches that have been climbing highest the fastest. Benchmarks for Etsy: fewer than five new is stagnant. More than nine suggests volatility. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before.

Back in July, you had eight screamers. (So-called because they seem to scream into the Top 20 out of nowhere. These keywords didn’t rank in the previous month’s entire Top 1000.) We’d never seen that many screamers on any Top 20 list!

For September, you’ve got still got 13 climbers, four of which are screamers. On the other hand, four of your Top 4 kept their identical rank Month on Month. They are No. 1 halloween, No. 2 wall art, and No. 4 tshirt.

September’s No. 3 though is a screamer, and the US and UK have the same one. Let’s take a quick look at yours.

Ranking 3rd: adult halloween costume

Of these three countries, your click-through rate (CTR) for this search is the worst: only 60%. That’s low for Etsy.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Canada’s keyword stats on Etsy for “adult halloween costume.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

When calculated just for the month of September, the CTR is even lower: only 48%! But we suspect that this screamer is the result of an Etsy promo on your home page. And often, these don’t lead to as many shoppers clicking the listings they’re shown in search results. Why not? Simple: they came to Etsy that day to shop for something else. Then got diverted by one of those beautiful Etsy home page promos.

Which is not a bad thing! Because it plants the idea. Some of these customers will be back when they’re ready to shop for halloween. And with this particular search, there is another factor at play. Lots of these shoppers might be clicking just to get costume ideas.

Speaking of CTRs, if you can stick with us until the end here, we’ve got a treat for you. We’ll do a roundup of which of Canada’s top Etsy searches have the highest CTRs now. If it proves helpful, let us know; we’ll keep doing them for you.

Meanwhile, we know you must be busy. So we’ll focus on the keywords that jumped the most in rank this past month.

Ranking 7th: pet costume

Fun! We were pretty sure we’d never seen this search make any country’s Top 20.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Canada’s keyword stats on Etsy for “pet costume.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months.

Gracious, that’s a spike alright! The only search volume in the preceding 14 months was a year ago in September: 50 searches. On the other hand, it’s got some tempting stats. Average CTR is 117%, and it’s coupled with invitingly low competition from your fellow Etsy sellers. But as ever with one-month spikes like this, we advise caution before investing time and money in materials.

Especially given that there are no other animal costume searches in your Top 1000. We even checked last October’s data. The only notable one was “dog costume” which climbed from 50 to 1,250 in October 2023. Puzzling! You’d think Etsy is perfect for pet costumes! Next, we checked the US data. It’s no different.

Maybe just add it to a Keyword List. Let that tool watch it for you for next year.

Ranking 8th: vtuber, up from #449

For those unfamiliar, vtuber is short for “virtual YouTuber.” Someone who uses a computer-generated avatar to present their content rather than appearing as themselves. And Etsy seems like the perfect place to find an artist to create one. Yet “vtuber” is another climber we don’t recall ever seeing in a Top 20 before. Let’s have a look.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Canada’s keyword stats on Etsy for “vtuber.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Canada’s keyword stats on Etsy for “vtuber.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months.

It sure has soared high before though: twice! “Vtuber” ranked #51 a year ago in July 2023. Then in January, it shot up to hit a 15-mo high. And since then, there have been several nice rises, including September’s 7,750 searches.

Looking for products to sell on Etsy Canada? This is what a better bet looks like. Just feast your eyes on that all-green Keyword Statistics bar chart! We especially love that 123% CTR and low competition rate: only 2,697 Canadian listings use this keyword.

Ranking 9th: lighting, up from #337

Like vtuber, your climber “lighting” covered a lot of ground in 30 days. But unlike vtuber, we have seen this keyword on Top 20 lists before.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “lighting.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canada’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The bright-green banner indicates it’s popular with Canadian shoppers now (October 6).

Everything looks great! Even has eRank’s “trend alert” banner telling us it’s been popular this past week. And we discovered something crucial for those of you in this niche. Look what happens when we click that “Include Near Matches” option, circled below in orange.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “lighting” and its near matches. The line chart shows their merged search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months. The callout banner indicates their popularity with Canadian shoppers now (October 6).

That competition stat jumped from a comfortable 16,467 listings to an alarming 88,096: yikes, right?! So we scrolled down the page to the table and selected the “Near Matches” tab. Doing so shows us what specifically “Include Near Matches” includes.

Aha! The culprit with all the competition is “light.” Despite its far inferior stats! Check it out: Average Searches: 225 to lighting’s 4,592. Average Clicks just 165 to lighting’s 5,483. Average CTR 73% to lighting’s 119%.

This tells us loud and clear: “lighting” is the keyword you want to optimize your listings for in your SEO.

Ranking 12th: halloween shirts

While yes in singular form this is a screamer, its plural “halloween shirt” ranked 40th in August. And by the way, the US and UK had this same screamer this month. We bet there’s a “halloween shirts” promotion somewhere on all three Etsy sites.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “halloween shirts.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with your Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “halloween shirts.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with your Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.

And it’s another one with stats that change dramatically when you tick that “Include Near Matches” option. Have a look.

This nicely illustrates why Keyword Tool’s default is having that “Include Near Matches” option ticked! Now, here in these trend reports we consider keywords as entered into Etsy search by shoppers. That is, individually. But you get a more accurate overview of a product’s popularity by including near matches. This is a useful example of what a difference it can make. We see there actually was a worthwhile number of searches for halloween shirts on Etsy Canada last year.

Ranking 17th: mixed metal jewelry

Yet another one that’s fun for we eRank data geeks! We’ve never seen “mixed metal jewelry” make any country’s Top 20 before. We were so eager to see it in Keyword Tool!

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “mixed metal jewelry.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Etsy shoppers in Canada over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “mixed metal jewelry.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Etsy shoppers in Canada over the past 15 months.

But alas: another single-month spike. And this time, clicking to include near matches made no difference.

Next we checked to see the US stats for “mixed metal jewelry.” They do have more months with appreciable search volume. Of the past 15, they saw five months with about 1,000 searches each. And then they got the same big spike in September you have.

Frankly, your one-month surge could be another Etsy promo. So we checked: Google AI confidently confirms that mixed-metal jewelry is trending.

“Yes, mixed metal jewelry is in style in 2024. This trend is a way to express personal style and add a unique touch to an outfit. It’s also a way to break away from the rules of fashion that have sometimes discouraged mixing metals.”

And Google showed pages of search results to support that conclusion. Accordingly, if the niche interests you, by all means add it to a Keyword List. Meanwhile, you could target the US market where it isn’t just a single-month spike. Here’s their data.

Granted, there’s more competition but for the Jewelry category it’s actually quite reasonable. Good luck!

Ranking 19th: engagement ring

Surprised / not surprised to see this in your Top 20. While it’s unusual, so is this fact. Of Etsy’s top countries, Canada’s the only one having both “ring” and “rings” making its recent Top 20 lists. And in September, you’ve got three ring searches in your Top 20. Here’s “engagement ring.”

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “engagement ring.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. And it has our green banner indicating it’s popular with Canadian shoppers now (October 6).
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Canada’s keyword stats for “engagement ring.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. And it has our green banner indicating it’s popular with Canadian shoppers now (October 6).

Popular indeed! It ranked 11th in July 2024; we mentioned it then. So if rings are your thing and you aren’t offering engagement rings, perhaps you should consider it. Clearly, Canadian shoppers are coming to Etsy for them. And with an Average CTR of 107%, there is substantial purchase intent.

New to online selling? Click-through rates reflect how many times that shoppers using a given keyword clicked on listings in their search results. We care about these because CTRs signal “purchase intent.” That is, customers searching with the intention to purchase – as opposed to those just browsing.

Are you put off by that high competition stat? Then take heart! Because eRank has a way even small and new shops can compete: by helping you niche down. “Niche down” means identifying products you can rank for high enough in search for yours to be found. Here’s how.

Quick tutorial: how to use Keyword Tool to niche down

Simply scroll down the “engagement ring” results page in Keyword Tool to its Keyword Ideas table. Then use filter and sort to see just the engagement ring searches that are popular right now.

Keyword Ideas table for “engagement ring.”
Keyword Ideas table for “engagement ring.”

Since we want to see only engagement rings, we chose the “Exact” filter (circled above in yellow). When we did that, all the competition figures below the top one, “engagement ring,” dropped into manageable range! Next, to see which shopper searches are currently popular, we sorted the results by recency. To do that, just click the “Search Trend” header, circled here in lime green.

Now, the default sort for this table is by Average Searches count. But that can make it easy to miss good candidates with low competition. Like the four shown here right below our broad term “engagement ring.”

The 12-mo average for “aquamarine engagement ring” is only 238 searches; easy to dismiss, right? But wait! In September, it got 2,250 searches. That was enough to rank 89th in your Top 1000 this past month. The next one, “alexandrite engagement ring,” ranks #322 with 1,350 searches and a CTR of 133%. (And when calculated for just the month of September, its CTR climbs to 146%!)

Now, several of these are one-month spikes. So before investing in supplies, it would be prudent to let a Keyword List monitor them awhile. However, if you do have some on hand but believed you couldn’t compete in the engagement ring market? As you can see in this screenshot, you sure can!

And phew! With that, we’ve covered your highest climbers. So we’ll end with that treat we mentioned at the start. Let’s see which of your top Etsy searches show the most purchase intent.

Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now

Of all the top marketplaces, Etsy has by far the most keywords with high CTRs. We still aren’t sure why. But even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% or above are rare.

Note too that we’ve based these calculations on their search volume and clicks in September, our most recent full month of data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs may be, these keywords should be the most popular with your shoppers now. Fingers crossed, we hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!

Highest CTRs in your Top 250 keywords

Many of these will be broad terms. So if you’re new, remember: don’t be discouraged by high competition. Just use that procedure outlined above to niche down.
