We’ve got 11 climbers – that is, Top 20 keywords that weren’t in the Top 20 a month ago. A turnover rate of 11 is on the high side of average for Etsy, but expected for March. Valentine searches have left the field, replaced by Easter and early Mother’s Day shopper searches. We see this every year.

Tip! Are you new to eRank or Etsy selling? Add any holiday-related search terms of interest to a Keyword List. Then six+ weeks ahead of the holiday, review them. That way, you’ll be a step ahead on switching Christmas to Valentine to Easter and Mother’s Day shoppers.

There is one climber we didn’t expect. In fact, this is the first time it’s made a US Top 20 list.

Ranked 15th: “png,” up from #121

On the left, Etsy’s US keyword stats for “png.” The line chart shows its Etsy search trend performance with US shoppers over the past 15 months. The gold badge indicates “png” has had high conversion over the past 30+ days.

As you can above right on the search history chart, “png” search volume is way up! In just the past month, it has shot up 257%! And see how it hit a peak a year ago in March? This March, it beat that high.

Even better, did you notice the “High Conversion” badge we circled in orange? That tells us lots of shoppers using this keyword in the past 30 days added to carts and purchased. Being data geeks, we had to check what its monthly click-through rate (CTR) was for February: 125%. Seeing all that listing clicking in February convert to sales in March – well, it just never gets old, lol.

If you’re here for ideas of what to sell on Etsy, the png niche shows promise. Can you make out the CTR score on the Keyword Stats chart above left? It averages 124%: that’s way above average purchase intent. For those of you new to online selling, we’ll talk more about that in a bit. But first, let’s take a quick look at all 11 of this month’s Top 20 climbers.

Top Etsy searches climbing highest fastest

In current rank order, here are March’s climbers, their rank in February listed last.

Ranked 2nd: “shirt,” up from #21

8th: “phone case,” up from #49

9th: “resident evil,” screamer (didn’t make February’s Top 1000)

10th: “keychain,” up from #29

12th: “womens clothing,” up from #33

14th: “ayn thor,” up from #34

15th: “png,” up from #121

16th: “easter,” up from #57

17th: “personalized gift,” up from #162

19th: “press on nails,” up from #80

20th: “t shirt,” up from #31 (but “tshirt” was #2)

This month’s single screamer is “resident evil.” No mystery there; Resident Evil Requiem was released at the end of February. In five days, five million copies sold. However, since “resident evil” is protected intellectual property (IP), let’s move on.

The only other climber to leapfrog 100+ searches to reach this month’s Top 20 is “personalized gift.”

Ranked 17th: “personalized gift,” up from #162

Left, Etsy US keyword stats for “personalized gift.” The line chart tracks its 15-mo search volume. And it’s got both gold badges: for high conversion, and for continuing to trend in search this week.

As you can see above right, “personalized gift” dropped to a 15-mo low this February. Then in just a month, it shot up 299%! And this one has both gold badges. For high conversion for the past 30 days, and another for continuing to trend in search this week.

Those of you here researching what to sell on Etsy, this might be a lead. See how last year from March on, “personalized gift” climbed steadily, reaching its 15-mo high in June? Close to 170,000 searches! As it turned out, June had about 45,000 more searches than it did in December; surprising, right? On Etsy, June is “Dads and Grads” month: Father’s Day and graduation gift shopping. Will “personalized gift” keep climbing through April and May this year?

Of course, being among the top keywords on Etsy is about more than search volume. At least as important is knowing which are the Etsy top sellers. For that, we need to see stats on purchase intent.

Top searches on Etsy and purchase intent

For those of you who are new to selling online, here’s a quick explainer.

On ecommerce sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs are an indicator of ‘purchase intent.’ These are people more likely searching with the intention to buy, as opposed to those just browsing.

You’ll want to keep up with the top keywords on Etsy now, yes. But for insight into which are selling best, look to their click-through rates. It’s why we end all these trend reports with a Monthly CTR Roundup. You’ll see which of the current Top 250 keywords have had the highest CTRs most recently.

Analyzing monthly CTRs is how we spot opportunities for you. What we prize above all is an established, high-ranked product that’s selling well in a niche with low competition. We call these unicorns (because people claim they no longer exist on Etsy). Hogwash, we say! In every Roundup so far, we’ve found some. So, let’s go see if we can find more, shall we?

Roundup! Top keywords on Etsy now with 125%+ CTRs

Here for ideas of what to sell on Etsy? Then this is for you! Your insider access to which of this month’s 250 top searches on Etsy show the most purchase intent. Keep in mind, these calculations are drawn exclusively from our most recent full month of data. Which means, whatever their 12-mo CTRs, most of these products are what’s selling best now. Any related to Easter, add those to a Keyword List for next year.

Ranked from #1-50

There is just one qualifier in the Top 20 this month. It’s #9 resident evil and it has a 150% CTR for the month; that’s as high as they go. But as already mentioned, it’s protected IP. No mere mortal Etsy seller could get licensed to use it. But never mind, because at #21 there’s another CTR high flyer.

#21 “sticker” – March CTR: 150%

Left, keyword stats for “sticker.” The line chart shows its 15-mo search trend performance. And “sticker” has both gold badges: for high conversion and for continuing to trend this week.

Its 12-mo average CTR is also stellar: 127%. So, don’t let that Competition stat deter you! Instead, use the data here to assess shopper demand and purchase intent. In the past 15 months, searches haven’t dropped below 20,000/mo, which means plenty of demand. And both Average and Monthly CTR stats are superb, which tells us that stickers are among Etsy’s top sellers.

From here, you just “niche down.” How? Here’s a quick demo.

How to use Keyword Tool to niche down

Has everyone seen Keyword Tool’s newest upgrade? For any given keyword, you can now see a score for “Keyword Difficulty.” Take “sticker.” As shown above, apart from that dratted “Competition” score, “sticker” has promising stats. So next, we just scroll down the page in Keyword Tool to its related searches table.

Table in Keyword Tool showing searches related to the broad term, “sticker.”
Table in Keyword Tool showing searches related to the broad term, “sticker.”

Here we’ve sorted the data by clicking the header, “KD” (circled in orange). This “Keyword Difficulty” score is the ratio between search volume and competition. The lower the number, the more opportunity this keyword may have compared to how many listings are competing for it. Sorting the related keywords this way, we found plenty with both high CTRs and low Competition.

Of course, stickers can be tricky to sell without violating IP. Even so, ranked fifth here is “neuvillette sticker;” Neuvillette is a character in Genshin Impact. Which, as discussed in last month’s trend report, is the rare exception. Maker HoYoverse allows fans to create and sell fan-made merchandise for Genshin Impact. As long as you adhere to their guidelines, you can use their characters.

And these were just the top six results. There’s so much more to explore! And you can use this niche-down procedure for any keyword with high competition. Meanwhile, let’s get back to our Roundup! Next up is #25 easter shirt, followed by #31 jewelry box (with 150%!), and #34 cat. The last three in the Top 50 are #42 chiikawa, #45 anime, and #50 digital, all high flyers.

Ranking #51-100

In last month’s trend report we talked a lot about crochet; crochet pattern ranked fourth in the Top 20. Since then, “crochet pattern” has dropped to #58 but boy has purchase intent soared! Its monthly CTR is up by 892%! Our next qualifier is #62 vtuber model (a repeat unicorn!) followed by five high flyers in a row. These are #68 kirby, #73 tumbler, #75 bag, #79 fivem, and #95 dice.

#95 “dice” – March CTR: 150%

Left, keyword stats for “dice.” The line chart shows its 15-mo search trend performance. “Dice” is another with both gold badges: for high conversion and for continuing to trend this week.

Nice! “Dice” has both gold badges, and also the highest Average CTR stat we’ve seen here so far: 141%! (Wildly high for an Average CTR.) But it’s got way too much Competition to count as a unicorn. You’ll have to go hunting through its related searches table to find one, and now you know how, yay!

Next, ranking #101-150

We open with a pair, #104-105 disney and mirror, and another pair at #111-112: riftbound and candle. Next, three with sky-high monthly CTRs: #118 custom plush, #121 spiderman, and #137 license plate frame. And we wind up this section as it started, with two pairs: #145-146 books and furry, and #148-149 dog and umamusume.

#148 “dog” – March CTR: 150%

Left, keyword stats for “dog.” The line chart shows its 15-mo search trend performance. And “dog” has both gold badges: for high conversion and for continuing to trend this week.

“Dog” is another with an Average CTR that is way above average: 135%. But so is its Competition stat. So we took a brief glance at its Related Searches table. If you sort results as shown in our “sticker” demo above, you’ll find a unicorn: “dog crate cover.”

Ranked from #151-200

At #152 we have suncatcher, followed at #155-156 by a pair: love spell and limbus company. “Love spell” is way up Year on Year. You may scoff but look under “love spell” in Etsy’s search dropdown. You’ll see “love spells with immediate results.” And “pay a witch” ranks 9th now in Monthly Trends’ Home & Living category.

Next up, five in a row with sky-high CTRs for the month. The first four: #162 gachiakuta, and #164-166 homestuck, resident evil requiem, banana. (Yep, it appears bananas are trending.) And the fifth is #179 anime phone case.

#179 “anime phone case” – March CTR: 150%

Left, keyword stats for “anime phone case.” The line chart shows its 15-mo search trend performance.

No gold badges but who cares: “anime phone case” is a unicorn! Our pet name for a high-ranked product with established search history and low competition that is selling well. As you can see, “anime phone case” hits every metric. And it has beat #95 “dice” for having the highest Average CTR stat we’ve seen here so far: 144%! Which means multiple months of significant purchase intent.

As for the “anime” in “anime phone case,” we talked about that in last month’s trend report. Anime products can be tricky to sell due to IP; it’s popular characters that are what shoppers want. Here’s one option. Look through the related search table for “anime phone case” in Keyword Tool. Are there any characters from “Genshin Impact” or “Honkai: Star Rail”? If so, go check out the HoYoverse website for its guidelines for selling fan art.

Resuming the Roundup now, up next are four more CTR high flyers in a row. These are #181 sonic, #183 cats, #188 pngtuber (a unicorn featured in January’s Roundup), and #189 dnd dice. Next up is qualifier #191 bookshelf, followed by two more March top sellers: #194 coloring book and #196 phonecase. Note that “phonecase” is one word. It might be worth trying; when entered as one word, Competition plummets and its Average CTR soars to 149%!

Finally, ranking #201-250

Slow start here; the first qualifier is #213 gold – but worth the wait: its March CTR is 150%! Then we have #218 helldivers, #225 crochet patterns, and #228 silver jewelry. Just two more for this month: #245 pearl and #248 earth day shirt.

#248 “earth day shirt” – March CTR: 150%

Left, keyword stats for “earth day shirt.” The line chart shows its 15-mo search trend performance.

“Earth day shirt” is another unicorn! While it only sells a few months a year, it sure looks worth it! All Keyword Stats are in the green and can you see that Average CTR? It’s 149%!

And that’s a wrap for this month, fam. Hope some of these prove to be profitable leads for you!
