What the heck?!

Wow, you guys: we’re shocked! We cannot recall how long it’s been since we’ve seen an Etsy Top 20 list like this. (Seems like ages; at least 18 months.) And to see one with all the familiar favorites and nothing strange: what the heck?

In case you’re new, let us explain. Years ago, average turnover on our Etsy Top 20 lists used to be around six keywords new month-on-month. The only exception was in 2020-2021, during the pandemic. Top 20 keywords were markedly stagnant. From one month to the next, only four or five searches would rise a little or drop down.

But that was the pandemic. By mid 2021, all those mask searches reverted to the old favorites: gift for him, earrings, slime. Plus we’d have some fresh air every month: seasonal searches and the latest trends. Up until about 18 months ago, that is.

That’s when we began seeing unprecedented levels of upheaval in these top Etsy searches lists. The opposite of what we saw early in the pandemic. The new usual became having at least nine keywords make the Top 20 that hadn’t the month before. More often though, turnover was even higher: 12-13 new. And most months, there’d be screamers: shopper searches we’d never seen make even the Top 1000 before.

We data geeks here at eRank had to adjust what had been our longstanding norms. We figured it would just be like this from now on. Welp, not this month!

The top Etsy searches that climbed highest fastest

February’s Top 20 has only four climbers, no screamers, and honestly, we could almost cry. They’re all so normal! Normal as in, the old days of the top Etsy searches. No weird spikes like we’ve been seeing every month. For instance, last month’s was “personalized decor gift.”

Here’s a quick look at how that one looks now.

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for “personalized decor gift” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. NOTE: In order to get you this report as soon as possible, search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best early estimates. Keyword search counts and rankings get confirmed by mid-month; some ranks change a bit but not by much.

Former No. 8 “personalized decor gift” didn’t even make this month’s Top 1000. However, it does at least nicely illustrate why we advise you not to jump on these screamers. Single-month spikes like this, just add them to a Keyword List, let that watch them for you awhile.

Moving on, here are February’s climbers in current rank order, followed by their rank in January.

#3 valentine gift, up from #162

#8 gift for her, up from #389

#11 furniture, up from #62

#12 tshirt, up from #35

As we said: the only surprise here is that there are no surprises! So, we’ll take just a quick peek at each of these. And then we’ll do our Monthly CTR Roundup; see what we can see about what’s selling best on Etsy now.

Ranked 3rd: valentine gift, up from #162

Anyone happen to remember how concerned we were last month about the dearth of valentine searches? Well, they’ve all come crowding back into the Top 20, yay.

But oh boy, down quite a lot Year on Year. Especially for January: yikes. As we mentioned in last month’s report, back in January 2024 “valentine gift” had been the No. 1 search. This January, it ranked #162, search volume down 94%; as we said, ouch.

However, in February it rebounded fairly well. Year on Year, it’s now only down 9%. And while January 2024 had eight Valentine-related searches in its Top 20 compared to this year’s paltry three– Well, again February’s better; it has four, exactly the same as February 2024. So, whatever the heck was going on, it appears to have recovered. We hope your sales did too.

Ranked 8th: gift for her, up from #389

This was another one we were shocked to find ranking so low last month! And even more so back in December. Because “gift for her” was once a Top 20 frequent flyer, especially around every gift-giving holiday.

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for “gift for her” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. That sage-green banner indicates it’s still popular on Etsy this week (through March 3).

Just look at the poor thing compared with December 2023! However, after guttering in January, “gift for her” has rallied. In fact, it’s well up Year on Year now: by 178%! And it’s also got our Trend Alert banner indicating it’s still popular now (the first week in March).

Does it matter though, given how broad a keyword this is, and that hypoxically-high Competition stat? No mere mortal seller is going to rank for “gift for her” on Etsy. It does serve to demonstrate a return to a former norm we assumed was gone for good. But is it back for good? Who knows.

Ranking 11th: furniture, up from #62

When doing our monthly review of keywords in Monthly Trends, we noticed that “furniture” was No. 1 in Craft Supplies. Craft Supplies? And yet it didn’t even make the Top 100 in the Home & Living category: huh.

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for “furniture” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. That Trend Alert banner indicates it’s still popular on Etsy this week (through March 3).

So, being data geeks, we scrolled down the Keyword Tool page and did a bit of digging. And think we see the explanation here.

Keyword Ideas table showing shopper searches and data related to “furniture.”

We used the filter (circled in yellow) to see only searches with the word “furniture.” Then we sorted the results by the Search Trend column. Doing this shows us what’s trending most recently. The top five (not shown) were:

  1. furniture
  2. mid century modern furniture
  3. cat furniture
  4. vintage patio furniture
  5. vintage furniture hardware

Next were three related to Barbie furniture; we scrolled past those. The next seven, though? All but “preppy room furniture” are indeed related to craft supplies! For doing decoupage, rub on transfers, and painted furniture.

“Furniture transfers” and “painted furniture” have excellent search history, too. Furniture transfers has had at least 1,000 searches in 12 of the past 15 months. It’s also got quite reasonable Etsy Competition. And look: “rub on transfers for furniture” has an Average CTR (click-through rate) of 112%!

And unlike furniture, decoupage paper and rub ons are cheap to ship! Are you here looking for what to sell on Etsy? These are worth researching.

Quick tutorial: Click-through rates and purchase intent

Speaking of CTRs, are any of you new to online selling? Here’s a pretty huge tip!

These click-through rates reflect how many times Etsy shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs are an indicator of purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).

Discovering what the most popular search terms are now with Etsy’s US shoppers is helpful. But for insight into which of these trending products are selling best, look to the click-through rates.

And now, back to our short list of February’s climbers.

Ranking 12th: tshirt, up from #35

Well, that “tshirt” is trending is hardly news. It nearly always makes the Top 20.

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for “tshirt” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. That Trend Alert banner indicates it’s still popular on Etsy this week (through March 3).
On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for “tshirt” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. That Trend Alert banner indicates it’s still popular on Etsy this week (through March 3).

All the proof you need of tshirt’s popularity is in that Average CTR: 122%! Even for Etsy, which has the most high CTRs of the ecommerce sites we cover, that is sky high. And that’s without counting the plural form’s data, and all the near matches like “t shirt” and “tee shirt.”

Unfortunately, “tshirt” alone has twice the Etsy Competition that “gift for her” has. So, despite that enticing CTR, we do not recommend entering this niche. But stick with us because we bet we’ll find some better leads in our Monthly CTR Roundup! It’s your insider access to the Top 250 keywords on Etsy that have the highest CTRs now. Are you here to find out what to sell on Etsy? Then this lightning round is for you!

Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now

As mentioned above, of the marketplaces we cover here, Etsy has the most keywords with high CTRs. That said, even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% and higher are rare. We did these calculations based exclusively on February, our most recent full month of data. Which means that regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, these products show the most purchase intent now.

One last thing before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be protected by intellectual property rights or prohibited by Etsy, please look before you leap!

Ranked from #1-50

Only one qualifier in the Top 20 this month, and it’s off-limits: #18 pokemon, with a monthly CTR of 125%. And from here, to keep this easier to read we’ll only shout out the highest CTRs. Like the pair at #22-23: keycaps has 143% and hoodies has 140%. And t shirt, which has 144%. And also #32 dice (we’re on a roll, lol); it has 150%! And the last qualifier in the Top 50 is #40 planner.

Ranking #51-100

First off here: #54 press on nails, #63 cat, and #69 fallout. Then at #72-73 another high-flying pair, both with February CTRs of 150%: severance and pikmin. Next, #75 sweater; #80 vtuber model; and #84 twitch overlay. Skip ahead a few and we have #89 fabric with 150%, followed by #94 clothes with 144%. And that’s it for this group.

Ranked #101-150

At #101 is disney, followed by #104 mousepad and #107 journal. Then two top performers in a row, both with 150% monthly CTRs: #115 one piece and #120 sword. Skip seven and at #128 is dnd, then at #130 there’s bookmarks, another with a 150% CTR for February.

Skip ahead a bit and we have three more high achievers. At #137 is bag (150%) then at #139-140: blue (146%) and mushroom (150%). And then another pair at 144-145: slime (150%) and skyrim.

Next, from #151-200

Here we start with #161 heart, and at #163 green, which has a monthly CTR of 150%. (Incidentally, we’ve remarked before that single-word color searches frequently make this list with extra-high CTRs. Like #140 blue, just mentioned, with 146%.) From here we have to jump a bunch to reach the next: twins at #184-185, magic the gathering and beads. Both have identical 141% CTRs.

Skip just five and there’s another that’s as high as these get: #191 runescape has 150%. As does the entire quartet at #194-197! They are berserk, christmas, print on demand, and seventeen, all with 150% CTRs for the month.

And ranking #201-250

Our final group starts out spotty. Right at #201 is jewelry box, but that’s it until #220 trump i did that. Things pick up again though with the trio at #223-225. Pink has 147% (see? another color), then axolotl, and the third is animated emotes with 150%

Then we have to skip another bunch to get to the next: it’s #228 lighter with 150%. By the way, “lighter” has really been on fire (ouch) for over a year now, anyone notice? Likely due to recreational marijuana being increasingly legalized, state by state. Check out lighter’s related searches table in Keyword Tool; some promising niches, especially for vintage sellers.

Back to our list now, we’ve got just four more for this month. There’s a pair at #239-240: resin and ramadan. Then at #246 we have sewing patterns. And taking us out on a high note with a CTR of 150% is #249 tarot.

We hope some of these prove to be profitable leads for you!
