What’s new Month on Month to the UK’s Top 20 Etsy keywords

We always focus our analysis on the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. We do this because these shopper searches have been climbing highest the fastest. So, what’s new for you lot this month? In terms of Top 20 turnover, lots! In fact, so much so, and for so many months in a row, we’re changing our Etsy benchmarks. For all four of our top countries we report on here.

It used to be that we’d occasionally see Top 20 keyword turnover as low as five new Month on Month. And conversely, that nine+ new keywords meant considerable volatility. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before. Now though? Having nine new is the new normal.

For October, you have 11 shopper searches in your Top 20 that didn’t make September’s Top 20. But no screamers! In September, you had 12 climbers and five of them were screamers. So called because they seem to scream to the top out of nowhere. They hadn’t ranked in the previous month’s entire Top 1000.

For example, one of your September screamers was fairycore. And here’s how it’s faring now.

On the left, a line chart depicting 15 months of Etsy UK shopper search history for the keyword “fairycore.” On the right, a pie chart showing the global distribution of Etsy shoppers using this search. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

::Sigh:: poor fairycore. Therefore, we’re calling your screamerless 11 October climbers within the (new) nicely normal range. Especially given that we’re in the annual upheaval of Halloween and Christmas!

So without further ado, let’s get to them, shall we?

October’s climbers

Here are your 11 climbers, listed in order with their current rank first.

#3 stickers, up from #35

#4 personalized gift, up from #116

#8 halloween decor, up from #108 (but “halloween home decor” ranked 4th)

#9 wreath, up from #216

#11 ring, up from #28

#12 christmas gifts, up from #55

#14 boo basket, up from #956

#15 wall decor, up from #37

#16 mugs, up from #25

#19 christmas decorations, up from #32

#20 bathroom, up from #92

We’ve mentioned before that once upon a time, Canada’s Top 20 conformed closely with the US Top 20. That is no longer true. Instead, it’s the UK list which month after month has drawn closer to the US list. This might in part be due to Etsy machinations. Take your No. 4 personalized gift, for instance.

Ranking 4th: personalized gift, up from #116

The clue is in the spelling. We didn’t believe so many (21,850) UK shoppers would type the US spelling for personalised into search. Rather, we thought it more likely they clicked a promotional prompt on the Etsy UK homepage. And indeed, here’s what we found.

And somehow those clicks were translated to “personalized gift.” But this is all academic: suffice to know your shoppers are interested! Have a look.

Whichever spelling they use, and whether plural or singular, will take them to the right place.

The other two October climbers you share with the US are your #8 “halloween decor” and #15 “wall decor.”

Ranking 8th: halloween decor, up from #108

Now, back in September you had “halloween home decor” as one of your five screamers. Ranking 4th, like “fairycore” it was a single-month spike. Was it another of Etsy’s bright ideas?

Unlike “fairycore” which dropped 94% and out of your current Top 1000, this one’s a different story! “Halloween home decor” is still way up Year on Year; in fact it’s still in your Top 20. And now “halloween decor” has joined it.

Of the two, we’d say this is the more promising one. It had much more search volume last year; it also began climbing earlier, in July with 2,400 searches. And it still has eRank’s trend-alert banner waving that it’s been hot through this past week.

But whoa: this is getting long! And t’is the season to be busy! So, from here on, we’re going to stick to just your climbers that leapfrogged the most in rank. Because we want to leave room for another “High-CTR Roundup” like we did for you last month. (More about all that in a bit.)

Ranking 9th: wreath, up from #216

We can get so focused on what’s new and climbing that sometimes we don’t spot what’s not. A couple years ago, the keyword “wreath” was quite popular, particularly in the UK. Well, we’ve finally got good news for those of you in the UK who specialize in wreaths!

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “wreath” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The green banner indicates it’s popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Nov 4).

Year on Year, this shopper search is up 233%; Month on Month, it’s up 322%! And given that “wreath” peaked in November last year, we expect to see it continue to climb. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

Ranking 14th: boo basket, up from #956

Anyone else asking what’s a “boo basket”? According to The Independent, it’s the latest Halloween TikTok trend. It certainly screamed very nearly out of nowhere. From ranking down at #956, in just a month it shot into your Top 20. Let’s have a look.

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “boo basket” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “boo basket” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.

Even without the Trending Now banner, boo basket’s Keyword Stats are spooktacular (ouch: couldn’t resist). We can’t decide which we love better: that 149% Average CTR? Or the low competition: only 1,990 UK listings are using this keyword. Also, the UK’s slice of the Etsy shopper pie chart is high for you: 28%.

The only downer is “TikTok trend.” They do tend to be ephemeral. Will it rise again next year as it has this year? For those of you viewing on a small screen, that Search Trend spike is 16,600 searches. That’s a Year on Year rise of 1,177%. We’re always wary of spikes with negligible history.

Unless you’re already in the Halloween trinket niche, or bundle cozy items like mugs and plushies. Then sure, add “boo basket” to a Keyword List; see if it starts climbing next August. And even if “boo box” is dead, you can still list them as “gift box” or “halloween gift box.” Those currently rank #73 and #370 for you.

Every month here we’ve been doing quickie tutorials on how even new listings can be found in high-competition niches. That same strategy can be applied in cases like this one too. For those of you who are new to eRank or Etsy, let’s do a short demo.

Demo: finding alternate keywords

Say you want to hedge your bets with “boo basket.” It’s essentially a gift box, so you look that up in Keyword Tool.

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “gift box” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The green banner indicates it’s popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Nov 4).
On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “gift box” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The green banner indicates it’s popular with Etsy UK shoppers this week (through Nov 4).

Unlike boo basket, “gift box” has got a decent history of search volume. And you’ve checked the pie chart showing global distribution of Etsy shoppers using this keyword. The UK’s got nearly 27%: excellent. Above left, you see that three of the four bars on the Keyword Stats chart are in the green. All but the competition: 291,694 is a lot of listings to compete with; especially if you are new to Etsy or the niche.

Don’t lose heart! Scroll down the page to the Keyword Ideas chart. And choose a couple helpful options. For “Keyword Match” type, we selected “Exact,” circled here in yellow. This will show us both words, in order: gift box.

And here’s a tip! The default sort is by Average Searches count. But that can make it easy to miss promising opportunities here. So, sort by the Search Trend column instead. You’ll find low-competition long-tail keywords that are trending now. Downplay the 12-mo data under Average Searches. Especially with seasonal searches, or when trend spotting.

Tips on assessing results

For example, “halloween gift box” has an average search count of only 296. But for October, it ranks No. 2 with 3,350 searches for the month. And compare its competition with No. 1 here. “Gift box” has 291,694 listings vying for buyers. “Halloween gift box” has fewer than 5,000.

Given that it’s a single-month spike, that one’s an excellent candidate if you are hunting new trends in keywords. Just add it with “boo basket” to a Keyword List for next year.

On the other hand, say your mission is to find a keyword with which you can compete with established sellers. First, you need to niche down.

“Niche down” is industry jargon. It refers to the process of identifying keywords (or products!) you can rank for high enough in search for yours to be found.

You like the look of those “gift box” stats. And it’s a comparatively low-skill, low-outlay category. Good for beginners. And low risk, as long as you stick with the proven winners. But what about that pesky competition figure?

For this type of quest, you want keywords that have proven search volume. Preferably for at least half of the past 15 months. In this case, “pamper gift box for her” is the better option. Nine months of search volume well above 1,000/mo. Yes, it’s had some low months recently, so proceed with caution. But again, it’s in a low-risk, entry-friendly niche. And all its stats are in the green.

And with that, let’s get to our insider’s roundup of what your most promising keywords are now. That is, a list showing which of the UK’s top Etsy searches have the highest CTRs.

Roundup! Top Etsy UK searches with 125%+ CTRs now

Why are we excited about these? Because high click-through rates indicate increased purchase intent. UK shoppers interested enough in what Etsy shows them in search results to click individual listings. Are you here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now? Then this lightning round is for you!

Note that of all our top marketplaces, Etsy has by far the most keywords with high CTRs. But even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% or higher are rare. Note too, these calculations are based on their search volume and clicks in October, our last full month of data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs may be, these top-ranked searches should be hot right now. We hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!

One more thing before we begin. Some of these popular search terms could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether it be prohibited by Etsy or protected by intellectual property rights, please look before you leap!

Ranking between 1-50 (these range from 49,850 searches to 8,750)

This month there are just two in your Top 20. Ranked #14, boo basket (with a 150% CTR!), and #18 3d printed. The latter made this list last month too. (To make reading this a bit cleaner, we’ll only shout out the highest CTRs. Just remember: they’re all at least 125%, which is fantastically high!)

Moving on to the rest of your Top 50, next there are two in a row: #25-26 stl (150% CTR), and digital. Then a bit of a gap before #42 keycaps but it’s another with 150%. We skip four more and finish this section with another pair, #47-48 keyring, and book which has 150%.

Ranking between 51-100 (ranging from 8,750 searches to 6,550)

This group starts out slow but at #63-64 there’s a pair that both score high. Invitations with a monthly CTR of 149%, and digital art, which has 150%. Skip one and there’s another pair: #66-67 dnd dice (150%), and candle holder. Next is #71 nsfw with 149%; and at #74 is sword with 150%.

The next is another pair, #82-83 golf, and lingerie. Then we spy September’s 11th-ranked search, now dropped to #86: personalized trick or treat bags. But its CTR has shot up to 149%; it was 96% a month ago. Skip one and next are three in a row: #88-90 digital drawings and illustrations (with 149%), christmas ornaments, and then amigurumi, also with 149%. We skip another one and at #92-93 are magnetic bookmark, and desk, both with 149%. Then at #96 frog, and at #98-99 sweatshirt (150%), and runescape.

Ranking between 101-150 (from 6,550 to 5,450 searches)

Wow, this group opens strong with three in a row, all with 149+% CTRs: #101-103 batmanphoto albumplanners. Skip ahead for #113 candle; and then a couple of pairs. At #115-116 coasters (150%), and charms. And at #118-119 groomsmen gifts, and tapestry.

Skip seven then at #127 you have elden ring with 149%. And then there are four more with 149% CTRs: #130 slime; #132-133 spellsterrifier; and #136 dice tray. That one was the first of a trio; the other two are digital planner, and opal. Then to finish this set, a couple of singletons, both with 149% CTRs: #141 warhammer, and #146 mousepad.

Ranking between 151-200 (from 5,450 – 4,500 searches)

Starting out, we have #156 car. Then nothing until a pair, both with 149% CTRS: #170-171 mens ringsjewelry. Skip four then another pair with 149%: #176-177 iphone 13 casecollar. Skip one and then yet another with a 149% CTR: #179 photography. Next, a trio at #183-185: chainsaw manpress on nailsterrarium. The latter two both have 149% CTRs.

Skip two more and then you have six more with 149% CTRs. #188 shelf brackets; #190-191 saltburnkuromi; #193 lamp; #196-197 arthur morgan journalboo box. And at #199 there is coast with a CTR of 133% which is still exceptional!

And ranking 201-250 (4,500 – 3,750 searches)

The final group starts strong with a pair at #202-203: pink has a 150% CTR, and giftsforwomen (yep, all one word) has 149%. Then skip one and at #205 is god of war, also with 149%. At #209 is pngtuber; then #211 penguin; and at #213 heart has 149%. And then all the rest don’t meet our criterion until the penultimate one. At #249, it’s book nook, with a worthy CTR of 131%.
