What’s new Month on Month to the UK’s top keywords on Etsy

As always, we’ll begin our analysis with what’s on this Top 20 list that was not on last month’s. It’s one indicator of how much instability there is in current trends. Benchmarks: a turnover of fewer than five is stagnant. More than nine is remarkable.

This month? Same as last month, you’ve got nine climbers. On the high side, but with the turnover of Christmas to Valentine searches, it’s expected. Now, three of those climbers are what we call screamers. That is, keywords that didn’t even make December’s Top 1000 searches. Yep: in just one month, these three screamers jumped January’s queue to reach your Top 20.

Here are the top keywords on Etsy most popular with UK shoppers now, listed with their current rank first.

#1 valentine gift (didn’t make December’s Top 1000)

#2 bracelet, up from #34

#5 2024 calendar (didn’t make December’s Top 1000)

#8 furniture, up from #54

#10 mugs, up from #49

#16 art, up from #90

#17 organization, up from #100

#19 valentines gift for him (didn’t make December’s Top 1000)

#20 keycaps, up from #225

The US had these same screamers, by the way, plus one more. We did some sleuthing and determined that two were due to the “ghost in the machine.” Etsy, that is. No doubt the same two were for you, too. Including the No. 1 keyword for both you and the US: “valentine gift.” Let’s have a closer look.

No. 1 (and Spike of the Month) valentine gift

Here’s what your data looks like.

As mentioned in the US report, it’s a first, having the top search be Spike of the Month. Nor do we recall a No. 1 search ever being a screamer. In December, this keyword had a paltry 50 UK shopper searches. In January, there were 60,900! Which means that in one month, “valentine gift” soared a stonking 121,700%.

It’s also way up Year on Year: by 4,772%. But before you dart off to change your Etsy SEO, take a good look at that bar chart. Shopper clicks are lower than searches, with an Average CTR (click-through rate) of 96%. Far from frightful, but given this keyword’s competition from your fellow Etsy sellers? We’d prefer to see more emphatic shopper intent.

Moving on! We delved into “2024 calendar” in the US report, so we won’t repeat that here. And your third screamer, #19 valentines gift for him, is a similar story to “valentine gift.” That is, it got a boost from Etsy. Here’s a snap of what that looks like on Etsy’s UK home page.

So, let’s look at your other climbers.

No. 2 bracelet

Up from ranking 34th in December’s top keywords on Etsy, here’s some data on “bracelet.”

Now, this is more like it! Granted, still heaps of Etsy competition from your fellow UK sellers. But shopper clicks exceed searches (indicating “purchase intent”) with an Average CTR of 107%. We also like to see that there was solid search volume a year ago. It supports our belief that the current popularity is “organic” (i.e., not due to Etsy’s benevolent machinations). With 55,900 searches in January – and 57,850 shopper clicks – “bracelet” is up Year on Year by 342%. Excellent.

Even without the spike, this appears to be a solid product lead. In 15 months, the lowest searches got was April’s 6,350. Which was still enough to rank #187 in that month’s Top 1000. And there were 11 bracelet-related UK shopper searches in April’s Top 1000. That’s how “bracelet” did in its worst month!

Looking for products to sell on Etsy? Then, enter “bracelet” in Keyword Tool and sort the Related Searches table by the Competition column, low to high. Scroll through for those that have the most search volume now. (Spot these by the height of the blue bars in each Trend Graph). Add those to a Keyword List and then let it mind them for you.

No. 8 furniture, up from 54th place

Furniture has been in your Top 20 before. That always surprises us. Shipping costs must be frightful. Nevertheless, it certainly appears a lot of UK shoppers look for furniture on Etsy.

So, let’s take a dip into the search data, shall we?

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “furniture” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “furniture” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search performance over the past 15 months.

Hmm. Searches dropped as low as 1,450/mo three times in the past 15 months. And only once rose above 20,000. That was in January 2024, when yes there were 30,750 searches. But those searches only got 19,616 clicks: 36% fewer.

So, don’t take that 100% Average CTR on the bar chart above at face value. Remember: it’s a 12-month average. Our data shows the apparent popularity seen here in January’s spike isn’t backed by commensurate buyer intent.

On the one hand, “furniture” has made the UK Top 1000 list 12 out of 15 months. But it’s also possible that Etsy’s had a hand in force-blooming this keyword. Has anyone noticed one of those Call-To-Action buttons labeled “furniture” on the UK Etsy home page? Either way, we hope those of you in vintage and handmade furniture are selling well. But this isn’t a niche we’d unreservedly recommend entering.

No. 10 mugs, up from 49th place  in December’s list of top keywords on Etsy

Since we record keyword volume per shopper search, we report singular and plural forms separately. But to judge popularity, let’s look at “mugs” and “mug” data combined. In January, 10th-ranked “mugs” had 28,850 searches and 26,442 clicks. “Mug,” ranked 32nd, had 16,800 searches and 17,674 clicks.

Combined, that means there were 45,650 UK shopper searches on Etsy for mugs. And shoppers clicked through on 44,116 listings they were shown. Not bad! Here are the mugs/mug merged stats.

On the left, a bar chart combining UK keyword stats for “mugs” and “mug” on Etsy. The line chart shows its searches over the past 15 months.

Now, we do like the look of this data better than furniture’s. The gap in January between searches and clicks was not as significant. Overall, Average CTR is 106%. And search volume never dropped below 16,000/mo. For the UK, that’s plenty to be getting on with!

Sure, there’s stiff competition. But “mugs” is a capacious niche! And the price point is right at the sweet spot for casual gifts. Most handmade and personalized seem to be under £20 each, and plenty (POD?) are under £10.

That said, if you’re considering this product line, take note. Competition in the POD mugs niche is likely far stiffer than shown here. Remember, the lower the barrier for entry, the higher the competition. And for all ceramic mug sellers, a significant factor will be packaging and shipping costs. Look before you leap, people! Especially if it’s into weighty breakables.

No. 16 art, up from 90th place

Have we ever seen this one-word search in the Top 20 before? We had a look at recent history.

On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “art” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting UK keyword stats for “art” on Etsy. The line chart shows its search performance over the past 15 months.

Of those five peaks in the past 15 months, three came close. In February 2023, “art” ranked 25th; in April, it was 28th, and August very nearly: 22nd place. That’s as far back as we checked. So, let’s just say that one-word “art” cracking the UK Top 20 is notable.

Year on Year, the Etsy shopper search “art” is up over 200% in the UK. And Month on Month is even more interesting. It’s up 111% over December. Wouldn’t you think there would be more art searches during Christmas shopping?

Yet here, above right, we can see that a year ago also, art searches rose higher that January. And its former 15-mo peak occurred in February. Will it again? Counting just the keywords with the word “art,” there were 31 UK shopper searches in January’s Top 1000. We’ll see.

No. 17 organization, up from 100th place

We talked about this one too in the US report. “Organization” ranked #21 on their list. Here’s what your data looks like.

As you can see, a year ago, “organization” had zero search volume on Etsy in the UK. In the months before December 2023, only three had any, and that ranged from 50 to 150. Then in December, it shot up to 11,400 searches and in January, more than doubled with 24,800. In our US report, we pointed to that colorful pie chart as further evidence that “organization” might be trending.

Another explanation is that Etsy might have its little mitts in this. But we don’t think so. Etsy has an ENORMOUS amount of shopper data. They don’t promote keywords on their site without good reason. Without knowing shoppers want to go where that “Call-To-Action” button leads.

That said, exactly like the US, only one related keyword made your January Top 1000. It’s the same exact one, too: “storage organization,” ranked #160 with 6,700 searches. Once again, we’re going to say: if you’re already in this niche, we’re delighted for you! Hope you’re getting orders as fast as you can fill them. But we’re going to hold off endorsing this niche to newcomers until we’ve seen more data.

No. 20 keycaps, up from 225th place

Another climber that you share with the US; “keycaps” ranked 28th there. Here’s how your stats look.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “keycaps” in the UK. The line chart shows its UK shopper search performance over the past 15 months.

That bar chart! How lovely! (We data geeks get excited when we see such low competition levels from your fellow sellers.) Excellent search/click ratio this past month, too. Average Click-Through 128% … we’re happy for you!

Year on Year, “keycaps” is up a very worthy 35%. But Month on Month? It’s up 205%! And there’s a call-out banner on the Keyword Tool results page saying this search has been popular over the past week. The first week in February, that is. Awesome.

And on that upbeat note, it’s off to Canada’s report we go!
