Warning: Beware of trademarked terms. This report may contain keywords that are trademarked: USPTO Trademark Database. NOTE: In order to get you this report as soon as possible, search-volume figures are based on eRank’s best early estimates. Keyword search counts and rankings get confirmed by mid-month; some may change a bit but not by much.

G’day, Australians! Happy to report you have the perfect amount of turnover in this month’s Top 20 Etsy keywords. Nine to twelve “climbers” new Month on Month is the ideal rate of change.

Your May Top 20 climbers  – keywords not in April’s Top 20 – are also the ideal blend. We like to see a good handful of shopper searches related to seasons changing and/or upcoming holiday gifting. And we love seeing some at the leading edge of a trend or new ways to get stuff done.

Much as we love those though, it’s just as lovely to see so many familiar faces! Your stalwarts in recent years: wall art; stickers; jewelry (necklace, bracelet, earrings, rings); tshirt; mugs; home decor. And always gifts; it’s year round with you Aussies.

So next, let’s get down to which climbers are which this month.

AU’s top Etsy searches climbing highest fastest

For May, you have 11 climbers, including one screamer. That’s our pet name for current Top 20 searches that hadn’t cracked the previous month’s Top 1000. So-called because some seem to have screamed to the top out of nowhere. Having one or two screamers is normal. And we data geeks reserve a special fondness for them; they can be fun to figure out.

That said, we were taken aback when you had six screamers back in March. Altogether, you had sixteen March climbers. By April though, you were down to 12 climbers – still, five of them were screamers. (After some sleuthing we determined most stemmed from Etsy promos for Mother’s Day on your homepage.)

We can’t wait to see where this month’s take us! [Cue drum roll] May we present: May’s climbers, listed in order by current rank, their rank in April last.

Ranked 6th: “mug,” up from #45 (but “mugs” plural ranked 14th in April)

8th: “prints,” up from #54

9th: “womens clothing,” up from #49

10th: “3d printed,” up from #41

11th: “taylor swift,” up from #70

12th: “vintage,” up from #500

15th: “vtuber,” up from #34

16th: “tote bag” (screamer; didn’t rank in April’s Top 1000)

17th: “art,” up from #24

18th: “press on nails,” up from #27

20th: “wedding,” up from #459

No need to discuss each one; we know you’re busy. Besides, we need to save room here at the end for your Monthly CTR Roundup. Anyone new here? For these, we analyze what 250 of Australia’s top Etsy keywords tell us about what’s selling best now.

Ranked 6th: “mug,” up from #45

We thought we could skip this one, given the plural “mugs” ranked 14th in April. And either mug or mugs (and sometimes both at once) are frequent flyers on your Top 20s. But then we noticed something unusual – and interesting.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “mug.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. That mint-green Trend Alert banner indicates it’s still popular with your shoppers this week (the second week in May).

First though, for anyone who’s new to eRank, we need to point out one crucial distinction. Keyword Tool’s default option is to “Include Near Matches” (circled above). Because this gives you the best high-level overview of product demand. However, our trend reports are based on Top 1000 lists ranking keywords as shoppers entered them in search. So, the singular and plural forms of shopper searches appear separately.

Which brings us to “mug” and what caught our eye in its Top 20 data: its monthly click-through rate (CTR). Back in April, its monthly CTR was 81%, and for Etsy, that’s pretty lukewarm. But for May, it has a CTR of 149%! Piping hot purchase intent!

Tip! Top Etsy searches and purchase intent

Are any of you new to selling online? Here’s a useful tip.

On ecommerce sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs are an indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one who’s just browsing).

So yes, finding out what Australia’s top Etsy keywords are now is helpful. But for insight into which of these trending products might be selling best, look to their click-through rates. Which is why we’ve begun ending our trend reports with a Monthly CTR Roundup. It’s a list of Australia’s top Etsy searches that have the highest CTRs now.

First though, we need to get through May’s climbers. So, let’s see if we can whittle down that list a little. How about we focus on your top Etsy searches that climbed the highest from the farthest down? They’re the hottest. And also we’ll look at the climbers with the best CTRs this month.

Ranked 12th: “vintage,” up from #500

The UK had this climber too; theirs ranked 18th, up from #127 in April. Your “vintage” climbed higher from much farther down.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “vintage.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Etsy shoppers in Australia over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert banner indicates it continues to be popular this week.

The UK’s Search Trend line chart was also far less erratic than this. From a low a year ago, its trajectory was fairly steadily upward. Not so yours! But it’s very possible that this might be Etsy’s doing. Did anyone see a promo on Etsy AU’s homepage? We found this one just now.

Etsy AU homepage about midway down showing a row of promos; the first is labeled “Vintage Finds up to 20% off.”
Etsy AU homepage about midway down showing a row of promos; the first is labeled “Vintage Finds up to 20% off.”

Search volume could clicks on this promo. Because in 15 months, its only other high was in January. “Vintage” ranked 24th then; its CTR for the month was 89%. That was ten percent higher than its 12-mo average. But for May, with searches at their 15-mo high? Its monthly CTR is just 65%.

That lackluster May CTR is another hint suggesting its search rank is thanks to Australian shoppers clicking a promo. Etsy does really enticing homepage promos. Even customers arriving on their website to buy something entirely different will click. But they don’t go on to click many listings in their search results because they’re shopping for other stuff. Because (of course) these shoppers lack “purchase intent.”

Bottom line? We see no signs that “vintage” is the kind of climber that signals the rise of a trend.

Ranked 15th: “vtuber,” up from #34

Conversely, “vtuber” didn’t climb far at all this past month. It’s made our short list for a different reason: “vtuber” has a monthly CTR of 143%. Among the highest of Australia’s top Etsy keywords.

Left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “vtuber.” The line chart shows its 15-mo. search history with your shoppers.
Left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “vtuber.” The line chart shows its 15-mo. search history with your shoppers.

And unlike “vintage,” vtuber doesn’t have eRank’s “Trending Now!” banner waving that it’s popular with Australian shoppers this week. But remember, that popularity stat is based on clicks. And as we said, Etsy’s artful promos easily lure shoppers into clicking. But they cannot make them click through to listings. Therefore, it appears Australian shoppers are sincerely interested in the VTuber niche; just look at that 12-mo 126% CTR.

“Vtuber” embodies the type of climber heralding new ways to get stuff done. In this case, the rising number* of online entertainers who appear via virtual personas. (*In Q1 2025, VTubers reached the newsmaking milestone of 500 million hours watched.) And this novel practice led in turn to the creation of a new business niche. To wit: providing VTubers with avatars and all of their related avatar needs.

As we wrote about in the US report, Etsy is the perfect platform for these provisions. Certainly, VTubers are shopping Etsy for them, and are avidly clicking through to view listings: May’s CTR is 143%!

So, those of you here researching something new to sell on Etsy, this niche is one to watch. Not just for the high CTRs / purchase intent either. Check out that Etsy Competition stat: a paltry 854 Australian Etsy listings!

Ranked 16th: “tote bag” (screamer)

Hmm: back in April, this one failed to crack the Top 1000. Aroused our curiosity: “tote bag” seemed an unlikely screamer.

Left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “tote bag.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with your shoppers this week.

Huh! It appears this is just its nature with Australia’s Etsy shoppers: very up and down. A year ago in May, “tote bag” soared even higher than its current peak. It just wasn’t a screamer then because searches had been 5,000+/mo for at least the previous two months. Ever since then though, looks like “tote bag” has been taking the roller coaster to work.

And while 111% is an above-Average CTR, its monthly CTR for May is just okay: 87%. Unlike this next climber!

Ranked 18th: “press on nails,” up from #27

This one came this close to making your Top 20 Etsy keywords last month.

Left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “press on nails.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with your shoppers this week.

But it did rate a mention in last month’s trend report. Specifically, in the Roundup: “press on nails” had an April CTR of 150% – as high as they go! For May, its monthly CTR is not quite as high at that: 131%. Still, it’s enough to make the Roundup for the second month in a row.

The US has “press on nails” as a May climber, too. And in this month’s UK Roundup, this keyword had a May CTR of 149%. Press-on nails appear to be making a comeback. In some form, they’ve been trending off and on since the 1980s. But shopper demand is volatile!

Early on in the pandemic, “press on nails” used to make a lot of Etsy Top 20 lists. Then those boom times ended. Will this turn out to be one of those bellwether climbers on the leading edge of a trend? For all you Etsy sellers who rode that 2020-2021 wave and have hung on since, we hope so!

Ranked 20th: “wedding,” up from #459

Like “tote bag,” shopper demand for “wedding” is up and down… with one important distinction. While “tote bag” bottoms out as low as 100 searches/mo, “wedding” never drops below 1,200 searches.

Left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “wedding.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with your shoppers this week.
Left, a bar chart depicting Etsy Australia’s keyword stats for “wedding.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert banner indicates it continues to be popular with your shoppers this week.

And now “wedding” is at a 15-mo high! Those three previous peaks you see above right topped out at 3,750 searches. With May’s 5,450 searches, wedding is up 45%. And holy crow, there are 26 keywords with the word “wedding” in your May Top 1000. And that’s without counting all the searches related to bride, bridal, groom, etc.

As for purchase intent, “wedding” has an Average CTR of 100%; for May, 97%. We also looked through all 26 wedding searches in May’s Top 1000. Most have May CTRs that are also right around 100%. Which is quite good, given this category’s typical shopper. While they have plenty of purchase intent (eventually), many of them do a lot of preliminary browsing.

Roundup! Australia’s top Etsy keywords with 125%+ CTRs now

For these Monthly CTR Roundups, we analyze your current Top 250 trending shopper searches. Then we see what their monthly CTRs tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy in Australia now. Notably, of all the big online marketplaces, Etsy does have the most keywords with high CTRs. That said, even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% and above are rare. We calculated these based exclusively on their search volume and clicks in our most recent full month of data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, these are the products that show the most purchase intent now.

Just a word of caution before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be prohibited by Etsy or protected by intellectual property rights, please look before you leap!

Ranked from #1-50

(Note: For better readability, we’ll only shout out individual CTRs above 140% – wildly high. But all qualifiers will have at least 125%.)

There are five qualifiers in your Top 20, which might well be a record! And the first three are sky high: #4 wall art has 150% for May; #6 mug and #11 taylor swift have 149%. The other two are #15 vtuber with 143%, and #18 press on nails.

Moving on to the rest of your May Top 50, the next qualifiers are a trio. Ranked #25-27, mugs (148%), mothers day, and phone case, the latter with a perfect 150%. Then at #33-34, you have a pair, both extra popular with Australia’s Etsy shoppers: digital (150%) and bratz (149%).

Skip down one and there’s a quartet: #36-39 omori, pokemon, phone charm, tshirt; the latter three all with 148%+. But then there aren’t any more qualifiers until #50 home decor.

Ranking #51-100

The first here is #52 wallpaper, followed by a quartet, all in demand with Australian buyers now. Ranked 54-55: rugs has 142%, and the rest all have 147%+: jibbitz, pig, and headphone holder cool. Next, a quintet, the first four of which also have 147%+! Ranked #59-63: beads, cosplay, custom embroidered hoodie, crochet doll pattern, and zine.

Next, a quartet, but one shopper search has an issue, lol: it’s an unmentionable. A four-letter vulgarity beginning with “f”. But since it’s clearly popular with Australian shoppers, we’re including it. So: ranked #65-68, the first two with 148%: f1, f**k (but spelled out), sonic, and keyring; it too has 148%.

And so do the next three in a row! All with May CTRs of 148% are #70-71 pop figures and flower, and #77 record player phone case album. Then the last qualifier of this section of Australia’s top Etsy keywords is #95 the last of us.

Next, from #101 through #150

This group gets off to a slow start, but then it’s absolutely banging! Every single qualifier in this whole set has a May CTR of 142% and up! In fact, all but one (#144) have 145%+!

We start with the pair at #117-118: budgeting and bookstopper. Then the trio at #120-122: bookmark, back patch, ashtray. And the trio ranked #124-126: christian clipart prompts, custom mug photo, and custom plush. Also the pair at #130-131: fathers day and poppy machine embroidery designs. As do #134 planner and #137 severance. And the trio at #139-141: red spider lily, headphone stand, and gt3rs.

And there’s more! But first the only one of this whole section with less than 145%: it’s #144 hannibal, with 142%. (Which is still a LOT!) Then all the rest through #150 have 145%+. Including the rest of hannibal’s trio at #144-146: pallascat and personalised gift box.

Winding up this section (and into the next), at #148-152 is a quintet, all with 146%+. The first three are nails, mens silver bracelet, and mens sterling silver bracelet.

Ranking #151-200

The final two of that high-flying quintet are #151-152 wildflower borders and wildflower borders clipart prompts. And improbably enough, this run of qualifiers with 146%+ CTRs runs all the way through #187! Ranked #155 is wristlet; then the pair at #158-159 the owl house and tailcoat pattern.

The entire quintet at #163-167: stretch tshirt pattern, south park charm, yume nikki, tf2, and fivem mlo. Right after, ranked #169-175, a septet! Dnd dice, mini me 3d printed figurine, padded arming cap, on leaf, poppy embroidery, louis tomlinson, and music posters.

And finishing up this extraordinary run of 146%+ May CTRs: #180 doom, #182-183 colouring book, bella poarch tee; #185 dicetower, and #187 stl files.

Breaking the spell of 146%+ CTRs is qualifier #189 yoto; its partner #190 witch has 140%. Then finishing the Top 200, a trio, all with 145%+ May CTRs. Ranked #198-200: txt, switch mod service and crochet mobile visual arts.

And finally, ranked from #200-250

Crikey, you’ve got another high CTR run! All of these qualifiers through #235 have May CTRs of 145%+. Three singletons: #202 first 4th of july mockups; #206 realistic watercolour procreate; and #208 redson plush. Also the pair at #210-211: jewelery jar and moon. And the next two singletons: #214 motivational poster and #216 led car floormats.

Continuing this run of 145%+ May CTRs, the trio at #221-222: japanese wall art, sylveon pokemon plush, and sneakerheads hypebeast. Then a couple more singletons: #227 car stickers and #230 epic the musical. And the pair at #234-235: adobe and accessories gift.

The spoiler of this run is #237 chatgpt. But the final three jump right back up to 145%+: #239 calendar keychain, #243 airline trolley, and #248 custom rug.

We hope some of these prove to be profitable leads for you!
