NOTE: In order to get you this report as soon as possible, search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best early estimates. By mid-month, all keyword search counts and rankings get confirmed; some ranks may change a bit but not by much.
What’s new Month on Month in your Top 20
What’s new? A lot! You have 12 climbers for January that weren’t on your last Top 20 list. And of those 12, seven of them are screamers! (So-called because they scream to the top seemingly out of nowhere. Keywords that didn’t manage to crack even the Top 1000 just the month before.)
Remember in December you were screamer-free? Seven screamers are a lot! So let’s get right to them. These were the top Etsy searches that climbed highest fastest in January. We’ll list them in current rank order, followed by their rank – if any – in December.
#3 passive amplifier (screamer: didn’t make December’s Top 1000)
#4 valentines gift for him (screamer)
#6 valentines gift for her (screamer)
#7 personalized decor gift (screamer)
#9 valentines (screamer)
#10 housewarming gift (screamer)
#11 3d printed, up from #54
#12 home decor, up from #81
#17 tshirt, up from #43
#18 jewellery, up from #149 (but “jewelry” ranked #47)
#19 crochet, up from #51
#20 galentine gift (screamer)
Anyone wondering what’s gotten into UK shoppers? Don’t: over half of these made the US list too and we’ve already caught Etsy red-handed. Posting those enticing Call to Action promos on their homepage, that is. We bet they’ve been on the UK homepage too. But not for this first screamer; this one appears to be the real deal. An organic shopper search that shot off like a rocket without any prompting by Etsy.
No. 3: passive amplifier
We’re certain it’s never made any country’s Top 20 list, although these have been around for years. What are they? A passive amplifier amplifies sound without the use of power; basically, the same way a megaphone works.
Might the origin of this sudden spike have been an influencer – a UK influencer? Because behold:
You lot have got practically all the shopper pie! And did you notice: it’s got an Average CTR (click-through rate) of 150%! Along with UK listing competition too low to count!
However, as we advise with any single-month spike, be prudent. Add “passive amplifier” to a Keyword List first; let that tool observe activities for awhile. Especially in light of the fact that all but one related search are also single-month spikes. That sole exception is the last one here, “passive speaker.” It got 1,250 UK shopper searches back in March 2024.
Of the rest here, we also like “wooden amplifier.” It got 1,550 searches this January – and just feast your eyes upon that 147% Average CTR! So, if this niche appeals, add that one and “passive speaker” to your passive-amplifier Keyword List too. We must say, as a product these look pretty neat! (And not too hard to make.)
Moving on…
You’ve got way too many climbers this month to cover here: we know you’re busy! And we want to leave time for your insiders’ Monthly CTR Roundup. (New here? For these, we analyze what your current top searches tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy UK now.)
These valentine screamers appear annually and Etsy’s promoting them hard, too. So, let’s just look at the one showing the most “purchase intent:” a January CTR of 114%. It’s the third-highest monthly CTR in your Top 20.
No. 9: valentines
And it’s also up 21% Year on Year.
“Valentines” also got a cute wee bump in July of 1,550 searches. All we could find out about that was what Google AI had. That the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates St. Valentine on July 6 and Hieromartyr Valentine on July 30th. The latter was a bishop martyred circa 270 AD, around the same time that St. Valentine was.
But it seems neither feast is an occasion to exchange valentines? (AI seemed offended at the very suggestion.) If you know, please clue us in! Meanwhile, let’s look at some of your non-Valentine screamers.
No. 7: personalized decor gift
The US had the same screamer. Here’s yours.
We see all the signs that an Etsy promotion explains this spike in searches. Have a gander at the “Searchers by Country” pie chart. We think Etsy’s showing the same promo on these countries’ homepages too.
Weirdly, there are 430,000 UK listings using this keyword. In spite of the fact that, until now, there’s been zero search volume for “personalized decor gift.” Therefore, we sure don’t see promise here. Nor for this two related searches.
Personalized decor / personalised decor
Here is “personalized decor”.
Despite that banner telling us it’s trending this week, its January search volume was too low to register! And lest you think the problem is the American spelling, nuh-uh. We checked. Here is personalised decor spelled with an “s”.
Poor “personalised decor” got skunked two months in a row: no searches in December or January. And see that spurt back in April and May? It denotes just 50 searches per month. And yet UK competition for this keyword exceeds half a million listings! Which is mad!
By the way, the US data for “personalized decor gift” is similar. A mountain of competition for a morsel of searches. Could it be these keywords did well years ago and so for a million+ sellers, hope still springs eternal? Or maybe they need eRank. Because in any form, these keywords are duds.
No. 10: housewarming gift
Let’s zip through this one quick. Because it’s another the US has too, which we think is due to the same conspicuous Etsy homepage promo. Here’s yours.
We had to swipe twice to get these, but they’re placed high on the page. (The US even had the identical image for Housewarming.) Let’s have a look at your data.
Your Search Trend history looks very like the US chart. Like theirs, a year ago yours peaked in December, then plummeted in January. Then, this past December, it slumbered through the month and soared in January. We think an Etsy promo was behind both countries’ spikes last winter too. Wonder if we’ll see the same in Canada and Australia? Stay tuned.
Whatever the case, Etsy has access to all the data. Which means they are more often right than not when it comes to these promos. Also, Competition is less than half that of “personalized decor gift” – for 91% more Average Searches! So, don’t let that competition figure discourage you.
As a data geek here at eRank remarked this week regarding Competition stats:
The fact that many listings use a given keyword doesn’t mean all that much. Because slews of those listings have yet to get a view, let alone a sale from it.
So, go forth and use “housewarming gift” if it fits your product. Just use the start of your title to niche down.
No. 11: 3d printed, up from #54
Now this is one the US did not have in their January Top 20. That alone suggests its rise is more likely due to UK shoppers entering it in Etsy’s search bar.
As you see, “3d printed” has eRank’s callout banner waving that it’s trending now. Quite a lovely 113% Average CTR, too. And the UK has 14.6% of the global Etsy shopper pie for this keyword. For anyone here looking for what to sell on Etsy, this might be a category worth researching.
And next, let’s do one more climber. It has a 112% CTR for the month: quite a nice comeback after such an unexpected downturn in December.
No. 18: jewellery, up from #149
Kind of shocking really, that no keyword with the word “jewellery” (nor even “jewelry”) made your December Top 20. Historically, jewellery has always been huge on Etsy. But here it is now, bouncing back.
Over the past 15 months, the lowest that searches got was 6,700 last September. The second-lowest was this past December’s 7,450. That’s just startlingly bad. And now, this close to Valentine’s Day, there’s another bad sign. No banner waving at the top of this screenshot saying “jewellery” is trending now with UK shoppers.
Take heart that jewellery’s Average CTR is still good: 102%. And when calculated for just the month of January, it’s even better: 112%. That’s solid purchase intent!
Are you new to selling online? On marketplace sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs can be an indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one who’s still just browsing).
Speaking of which: it’s time for your Monthly CTR Roundup! We’ll analyze the UK’s top 250 Etsy keywords to find which had the highest CTRs in January. Are you here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now? Then this lightning round is for you!
Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now
Of the top online marketplaces we cover, Etsy has the most keywords with high CTRs. That said, even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% and above are rare. We based these calculations on their search volume and clicks in January, our last full month of data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, most of these keywords should still be popular with shoppers now. Add the Valentine’s Day gift searches to a Keyword List to revisit in early December for next year. (Yes, that far ahead!)
One last thing before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be protected by intellectual property rights or prohibited by Etsy, please look before you leap!
Ranked in January’s Top 1-50
Interesting! In both November and December, there were no keywords in those Top 20s that qualified. But in January’s, yay, you have two, both with stunning 150% CTRs: #3 passive amplifier and #14 mugs.
Then right at #21-23, a trio: candle with 131%, and stl and desk, both with 150% CTRs. So we’re off to a fine start. (And from here, for the sake of readability, we’ll only shout out individual CTRs of 140% and up. Because that’s sky-high!) At #29 is rug, at #31 bookmark, and then there’s just one more in the Top 50: #48 passive amp. (If you started a Keyword List for “passive amplifier,” add this one to it.)
Ranking 51-100
The first here is #57 and it’s got a CTR of 150%: birthday. Then no more qualifiers until #75 blanket. Skip just one and at #77-78 there’s a pair, quilt and phone case. Skip one again for #80 bedside table; it’s got 150%, as does #82 desk organiser.
At #86-87 are damascus (149%!) and liverpool. Skip just one and you have a trio, all with 149%: 12 week year notion, artisan keycap, and arsenal. Then we finish out the Top 100 at #100: it’s bluey, and it too has a 149% monthly CTR.
Ranked 101-150
At #107 is trench crusade; at #112 cv template; then none until #125 soap but it has 149%. Skip just one for a sextet at #127-132, all well above 140%! With 149%: star wars, digital planner, and pottery. Then arcane with 143%, airsoft with 149% and akira with 150%. Again skip one and you have #134 miffy, also with 150%! The last two in this group both have 149% CTRs: #138 booktok and at #144 zelda.
Ranking 151-200
A big gap before the next qualifier: it’s #169 gifts for her. Then at #172-174, a trio: valentines gifts for him, wedding guest book, and monitor stand. Skip ahead a few and you have twins at #177-178, both with 149% CTRs: lingerie and ita bag.
Then the pace picks up. At #180-181: steam deck, and save the date which has a 146% CTR. Skip one for #183 bride. Skip two more and at #186 there’s lanyard with 149%. And the Top 200 finishes strong with a quintet at #190-194. The first is elden ring, then all the rest have 149% CTRs: ferrari jacket, cyberpunk, bookshelf, and orgonite.
Ranking 201-250
We start these off with another quintet, four of which have 149% CTRs! At #202-206: shelf brackets has 149%, then pngtuber. And the rest have 149%: personalised wax seals, ralph lauren, and rgh xbox 360. Skip ahead to #210 for bakelite; it too has a 149% CTR, as do the next two: #215 pilates and #225 weird items. (Gotta love that one.)
No other qualifier until the pair at #242-243: dining table and framed art. Then skip one for a trio at #245-247: compact mirror, bookmarks (149%) and ceiling light. And that’s it for your Top 250… but here’s a bonus! Just over the line at #251-252: personalised mug, and wedding placecards, the latter with a 148% CTR.
We hope some of these prove to be helpful leads!
