Etsy’s Top 20 US shopper searches Jan-Mar (Q1) 2024

  • wall art
  • valentine gift
  • jewelry
  • gift
  • stickers
  • bracelet
  • decor
  • earrings
  • necklace
  • valentines gift for him
  • handmade gift
  • home decor
  • rings
  • mugs
  • easter
  • personalized gift
  • furniture
  • mug
  • valentine home decor
  • valentine

Any surprises? Ours was seeing there were enough Valentine searches to push four into Q1’s Top 20. Despite there being none in March’s Top 1000. This shows you how big Valentine’s Day is on Etsy! Altogether in Q1’s Top 1000 shopper searches, there were 33 with the word “valentine.”

Here is Q1’s highest ranked of the four, 2nd-place winner “valentine gift.”

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “valentine gift.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

Well over a quarter million searches just in January! And it’s the same every year; just the phrasing changes. For instance, “valentine gift” didn’t even rank a year ago in January 2023’s Top 1000! Instead, there were these four in the Top 20: #2 valentines gifts for him, #12 valentine, #15 valentines and #16 valentines day. And 29 more in the rest of the Top 1000.

So if you’re here looking for what to sell on Etsy, here’s a solid lead. And it’s such a broad niche, there are loads of ways to get in on this market. As you can see from Q1’s Top 20 Valentine searches, it’s everything from gifts to home decor. Drawing from Q1’s Top 1000, other categories with “valentine” are shirts, printables, clothing, cards, accessories, crafts, svgs, pngs, and mugs.

Easter on Etsy

Ranking 15th in Q1’s Top 20, Easter is also celebrated by lots of US Etsy shoppers. For Q1 2024, search volume for the broad keyword “easter” is 165,470 with far higher clicks. Four more shopper searches made Q1’s Top 1000: easter gift, easter svg, easter png and easter basket.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “easter.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.

So don’t be dismayed at first glance by these stats! Bear in mind whenever you evaluate a seasonal search that the bar chart’s top three bars are 12-month averages. And when the seasonal search regards a holiday which moves around year to year as much as Easter? That’s a major factor to keep in mind.

This Search Trend graph above right is a perfect example. You might see this and think, “Weird: people weren’t into Easter as much this year.” But that’s unlikely. Rather, it’s that Etsy shoppers had a shorter season this year in which to shop. Last year, Easter was April 9th. This year, it was March 31.

By ecclesiastical rules set centuries ago, there are 35 dates on which Easter can take place. The earliest possible date is March 22 and the latest it can be is April 25. The later in the year Easter falls, the more time people have to shop. So just factor that into your inventory planning.

Next, let’s look at which of Q1’s Top 20 most-searched keywords on Etsy made all three individual monthly lists. This will give us a high-level overview of what’s hottest now with US Etsy shoppers. And give you some ideas for what to sell on Etsy these days.

Hottest Etsy shopper searches now

Tip: It’s easier to stock what buyers want than to find buyers for what you’ve got.

Listed in order by their Q1 rank, these made all three months’ Top 20s:

    • wall art

    • jewelry

    • gift

    • stickers

    • earrings

    • necklace

Wow, we thought that list would be longer! Did you? Nevertheless, these six are the only shopper searches to make all three monthly lists, January through March. And notably, all six of these also made 2023’s Annual Top 20.

You can read that report here; the Top 20 list for the year is at the end. On that list, their order high to low was gift (which took 2nd place); stickers; earrings; wall art; jewelry; and necklace, which was 15th.

Wall art

Here is what Q1’s No. 1 “wall art” looks like now.

On the left, a trend graph depicts 15 months of US search volume for the keyword “wall art.” The pie chart shows the countries where eRank found Etsy shoppers using this search term.
On the left, a trend graph depicts 15 months of US search volume for the keyword “wall art.” The pie chart shows the countries where eRank found Etsy shoppers using this search term.

We chose to show you the pie chart because it indicates how globally popular wall art is. As for the keyword stats (not shown), the top three bars are all green. But competition from your fellow US Etsy sellers for this keyword is a staggering 13,433,190. Ow!

That said, this will be true for all of these Top Six. Here though we’re not looking for keywords to use in your SEO. Instead, we are analyzing what these top Etsy keywords tell us about what shoppers want. Because, again, that’s always the best answer to what to sell on Etsy. Sell what shoppers want.

But how do you sell what shoppers want when competition is so intense?

Niche down!

To discover what types of wall art are hottest now and which might have lower competition, “niche down.” Scroll down wall art’s page in Keyword Tool to the Keyword Ideas table. There you’ll find lots of ways to filter and sort the data to reveal opportunities. For instance, here we just sorted by the Search Trend column to see what’s trending highest most recently. And not far from the top, look what we found.

Let’s take a closer peek at this one we circled, “moss wall art.”

Now, that’s more like it, right? All the bars are green – including the Trend Alert banner telling us it’s popular with Etsy shoppers this week. That’s the same Kelly green color (eRank for “as good as it gets”) as the Etsy Competition figure. Yay: only 11,444 US Etsy sellers are using this keyword.

Average Clicks exceed searches; Average CTR is 115%. Wonderful! Remember, click data is an indicator of “purchase intent.”

Purchase intent

Are you new to online selling?

Tip! Here, “clicks” reflect the number of times that shoppers using a given keyword clicked on listings in their search results. We care about these because clicks are among the indicators signaling “purchase intent.” That is, how close a shopper is to deciding to buy as opposed to one who’s still just browsing.

Another good sign is on the Search Trend line graph on the right above. While up and down, search volume for the past 15 months never drops lower than 3,000 per month. And a quick Google search suggests that moss wall art is still trending well in 2024.

With wall art > moss wall art, we’ve shown you how to analyze keywords to discover what shoppers want. Before we move on, let’s do one more of these Top Six hottest Etsy shopper searches.

Earrings

As far back as we’ve been reporting on Etsy’s top trends, “earrings” has been a Top 20 constant. In fact, it’s the only constant! “Gift” is just the runner-up. And in Q1 2024, it has the highest CTR of our Top Six. Here are current stats on our reigning queen.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “earrings.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “earrings.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.

In 15 months, search volume for “earrings” hasn’t dropped below 73,800. However, for all three months of Q1 2024, search volume is down compared with Q1 2023. In March, Year on Year it’s dropped 35%. No need to freak out though! Maybe add “earrings” to a Keyword List; let that monitor it for you.

But meanwhile, rest assured. Scrolling through the Keyword Ideas table, there are plenty of searches with the word earrings that appear promising. Here’s just one, flatback earrings.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “flatback earrings.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “flatback earrings.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.

All bars on the bar chart are green for go. Etsy Competition from your fellow sellers is only 5,435 – that’s mad low for jewelry! Plus a CTR of 129%! And this keyword is just one of many earrings-related shopper searches looking good right now.

For any eRank newbies, here’s how we filtered the Keyword Ideas table to find “flatback earrings.” First, top left (circled in yellow), we selected “Phrase” for the keyword match type. This constrained results to searches with the word earrings. Then, for sort type, we clicked the little up-down arrows beside “Search Trend.” This sorts results high to low by current search count.

And voila: the sixth entry from the top is “flatback earrings,” with 4,520 shopper searches in March.

Top Etsy keywords: the unexpected

Next, let’s have a look at some surprises in Q1’s Top 20. Like Q1’s No. 6 “bracelet.”

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “bracelet.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “bracelet.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.

Another shopper search with the Trend Alert banner! But mostly it’s January’s spike which caught our eye – and what launched it so high in Q1’s Top 20. If you’re on a small screen, that pop-up tells us “bracelet” had 175,980 searches in January.

For those of you neither in jewelry nor the Frozen North, here’s why January’s spike is a surprise. It’s because fewer people wear bracelets in winter. One reason: their arms aren’t as likely to be bare. Also, bracelets are a nuisance (and far easier to lose) when shucking outerwear several times a day for months.

And while bracelet’s 113% 12-mo Average CTR is excellent, when we calculated just for January, the month it spiked? It was down to 90%. So, lately, when we’ve seen an otherwise-unaccountable spike coincide with a drop in click-through rate, we’ve suspected Etsy.

That is, that Etsy promoted a keyword and counted each shopper clicking an onscreen prompt as a search. But since some of those shoppers may have been merely curious, they didn’t click as many search results. Not as many as would shoppers having more purchase intent.

But it’s just a theory! Meanwhile, “bracelet” has sunk back down, now ranking slightly lower Year on Year. However, its CTR has recovered well! In fact, better than ever: for March it’s at 122%. And 32,840 searches were enough to rank it 35th on March’s list of most-searched keywords on Etsy.

Q1’s No. 17 furniture

Frankly, the rise of this search into the top Etsy keywords has baffled us for awhile. Here’s furniture.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “furniture.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Etsy keyword stats for “furniture.” The line chart shows its search trend performance over the past 15 months.

Maybe it’s because we’re thinking like sellers not shoppers. The idea of shipping objects as large and heavy as furniture when freight costs are so high… ugh. But maybe buyers don’t think like that. Or it’s worth it to them to have a unique piece that’s vintage or handmade.

Not to mention custom. Few large online marketplaces can give them that! Custom continues to be such a huge megatrend on Etsy; 13 keywords had “custom” in Q1’s Top 1000. The single-word “custom” ranks 28th. But let’s get back to “furniture.”

Check out that Search Trend line graph. As you can see, search volume was comparatively low in Q1 a year ago. And stayed that way through June. Who knows what drove that spike in August: 131,940 shopper searches! (And to go with it, a reduced CTR of 88%.) Was it Etsy, running a promo like this current one?

What matters is that overall, furniture’s search volume over the past five months has held at around 50,000 per month. For Q1, its CTR is 110%. Are you doing product research into what to sell on Etsy? If you can figure out shipping, why not give it a try!

Concerning? Digital products

Digital offerings have been trending on Etsy for years now. And we know a lot of you hopped on that train. Have you noticed signs of a slowdown?

This is the Keyword Ideas table for “digital,” sorted high to low by the Average Searches column. As data nerds, where our eyes go first is to the little 15-mo search trend graphs. None of them look good; especially compared with Q1 a year ago. Yikes.

Digital planner

On both the table above and our Q1 2024 Top 1000 list, the highest-ranking of these is digital planner.

On the left, a trend graph depicts 15 months of US search volume for the keyword “digital planner.” The pie chart shows the countries where eRank found Etsy shoppers using this search term.

That 15-mo search trend line is discouraging alright. Compared with Q1 2023, digital planner’s search volume is down by 65%. But we do see some positives!

One is this “Searchers by Country” pie chart. The US has only half of the pie, which means there is strong global interest. And since digital doesn’t involve snail mail, sellers have more range. And this keyword’s got our Trend Alert banner; it’s been popular this week (the first week in April).

Digital planner’s 12-mo Average CTR is 126%, which is great. For Q1 it’s not quite so high, but still above 100%. We’ll be keeping an eye on this; good luck, digital sellers! Meanwhile, speaking of great Click Through Rates…

Most-searched keywords on Etsy with high CTRs

Let’s finish with a quick spin through Q1’s top shopper searches for most-promising CTRs. Here, we’re identifying keywords with the likeliest purchase intent. Remember, as explained above in the “Niche down!” section, these will be too broad / competitive to rank for. If you’re researching what to sell on Etsy, you can niche down from these.

From Q1’s Top 150, in order by search rank, these keywords all have CTRs that exceed 120%. Mugs, keycaps, ring (150%!), tshirt, hoodie, wall decor. The next three have 150% CTRs: cat, dice, painting. The rest: candle, wedding dress, pins (150%), dog, press on nails (151%), charms, heart, prom dress, wallet, dress, slime, nails, jewelry box, phone charm, bookmarks, dragon, and stl.

And with that, we wish you good luck on the hunt, our fellow Etsy sellers!
