G’day, Australia! As always, we’ll start with your climbers: Top 20 keywords not on last month’s Top 20 list. Because these are the searches climbing highest the fastest most recently. For September, you are back up to 15 climbers. That’s an exorbitant rate of turnover, even for Etsy! On Etsy, a turnover of nine or more suggests volatility. Lots more shoppers searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just the month before.

These top Etsy searches climbed highest the fastest this past month

Here are your September climbers and screamers, listed in order with their current rank first.

#4 mugs, up from #26

#5 crochet, up from #63

#6 halloween home decor (screamer: didn’t make August’s Top 1000)

#7 tapestry, up from #225

#9 poster, up from #24

#10 rug, up from #86

#11 spiderman (screamer)

#12 womens clothing, up from #50

#13 vtuber, up from #269

#14 pins, up from #163

#15 sapphire (screamer)

#16 stickers, up from #46

#17 shirt, up from #115

#18 rings, up from #45

#20 earrings, up from #159

Three of your climbers are what we fondly call screamers. Because they scream into the Top 20 seemingly out of nowhere. These failed to crack August’s Top 1000. Which means they not only climbed highest the fastest most recently; rank-wise, they also covered the most ground.

We data geeks at eRank love to analyze your Top 20 list, Australia. It tends to be the most unique of Etsy’s top countries. And this month is no exception! That said, with so many climbers we need to whittle them down a bit. Because we have a treat in store for you at the end of this report. We need to leave you time for that.

And especially because it’s getting to be that time of year: we know you must be busy! So we’ll focus on just the top shopper searches that jumped the most in rank this past month.

Ranking 6th: halloween home decor

This is the one screamer you share with other countries we cover here. No mystery about it either; it’s a seasonal search. The US and UK also have it this month. And based on our research, we think it likely arose from an Etsy promo somewhere on its homepage. So let’s have just a quick look at yours.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “halloween home decor.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

Yep: your data looks much like the UK’s. Only the US had appreciable search volume for this keyword last year. So, as we always advise when it comes to single-month spikes, don’t go changing your SEO yet. Add it to a Keyword List for next year. Let that monitor whether it starts to climb next June or so.

Ranking 7th: tapestry, up from #225

Fun! We’ve never seen this shopper search make any Top 20 list before!

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “tapestry.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. Above, the trend-alert banner tells us this keyword is popular now, (Oct 2-8).

And yay, this is more like it! Plenty of months with search volume, especially December through January. Also nice rises in seven other months. And currently at a 15-mo high.

Turning to the keyword stats chart, all the bars are green! Just like that bright green banner up top telling us this has been popular this past week.

If you’re here to learn what’s selling best on Etsy in Australia, this product is worth a look.

Pssst! Hot tip: “custom tapestry” is even better! More months with good search volume. A superb click-through rate (CTR) averaging 123%. And far lower competition from your fellow Aussie sellers: crikey! only 442 listings are using this keyword.

That said, when we searched Etsy Australia for “tapestry,” we were surprised. Rather than proper tapestries, most results were just flimsy cloth wall hangings. Including thumbnails showing a blank polyester cloth printed with “Your Photo Here.” So it appears people aren’t handweaving the majority of these, lol.

Instead, looks like lots are POD. And the keywords they’re using? Custom tapestry from your photo; personalized picture or text wall tapestry backdrop; tapestry for room decor; wall art decor.

We know “wall art” has been a top search for you for ages. And this month you’ve got 16 keywords in your Top 1000 related to wall art. In Q3 (2024 Third Quarter), it’s your No. 1. So yes indeed, “tapestry” is clearly a promising niche for product research.

Ranking 13th: vtuber, up from #269

(Dang! Sorry, gang. We have to skip #11 spiderman. You’re the only one to have it but it is so SO off-limits due to intellectual property protections.) Moving right along, then! Here is “vtuber.”

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “vtuber.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “vtuber.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.

For those unfamiliar, vtuber is short for “virtual YouTuber.” Someone who uses a computer-generated avatar to present their content rather than appearing as themselves. And Etsy seems like the perfect place to find an artist to create one. Yet “vtuber” is another we don’t recall ever seeing in a Top 20 before.

And it’s another extra nice one! Currently at its 15-mo high. Nine months with search volume ranging from good to very good. And even more spectacular stats than “tapestry” has! Especially that Etsy Competition figure: only 890 Australian listings are using this keyword.

Ranking 15th: sapphire

Sapphire is September’s birthstone. So maybe we should be surprised it isn’t on any other Top 20 list this month.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “sapphire.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.
On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “sapphire.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.

Way up Year on Year! September to September, it’s up 9000%! We can see it was up back in August 2023; probably people shopping ahead for September birthdays. Even so, comparing August 2023 to September 2024, it’s still up by 194%.

These peaks we see in the Search Trend graph coincide with gifting. September birthdays; December; February for Valentines. Therefore, it’s understandable that the bar chart’s 12-mo average search count, 554, isn’t green.

So next, we checked sapphire’s related searches table in Keyword Tool. No buried treasure there. Without more search volume from somewhere, we hesitate to recommend this niche if you aren’t already in it. Maybe add it to a Keyword List; see where it goes from here.

And for anyone new who’s here looking for ideas of what to sell on Etsy, here’s another tip.

Pro tip! First identify what shoppers are searching for and then make that. Because making whatever you want first and then seeking buyers for it is far less certain to work. The same applies for vintage and supply sellers. First step: find shopper searches with good purchase intent. Then go forth and source those products.

Quick tutorial: “purchase intent”

New to online selling? Click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. We care about these stats because CTRs signal purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).

And to help you do just that, as we mentioned up top, we’ll end with our insider’s roundup of your most promising keywords now. That is, which of Australia’s top Etsy keywords have the highest CTRs.

Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now

Here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy? Then this lightning round is for you! Note that even on Etsy, CTRs above 125% are rare. Note too, we did these calculations based on their search volume and clicks in September. Which means that regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs may be, these should be your hottest keywords now. We hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!

Highest CTRs in your Top 250 shopper searches

Holy cow, Australia! This is the second month that we’ve done these for our four countries, and are we gobsmacked! We just now went through your Top 250 to ID these and wow! Same as last month, you have way more than the US, UK or Canada. Haven’t a clue why Australia’s Etsy shoppers do so much more clicking through for you. Do you?

Meanwhile, we need to make this massive list less cluttered with distracting rank numbers and percentages. Remarkably, nearly all of these have September CTRs of 145% or higher! So we’ll only shout out the ones with 150% CTRs (that’s as high as they go). And we’ll group yours by rank in batches of 25 rather than 50 as we’ve done the others.

One last thing before we begin. Some of these popular search terms could certainly cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether it be prohibited by Etsy or protected by intellectual property rights, please look before you leap!

The next three all have the word sublimation: sublimation acrylic design; sublimation designs; and sublimation pokemon. Next, another two in a row: tshirts, tumbler wrap png. And lastly, ranking 249: wallet.
