What’s new Month on Month to the UK’s Top 20 Etsy keywords
As always, we’ll focus our analysis on the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20. We do this because these are the shopper searches that have been climbing highest the fastest. Benchmarks: on Etsy, a turnover rate fewer than five new is stagnant. More than nine suggests considerable volatility. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before.
For instance, anyone remember how nuts July was for you guys? You had 15 climbers in July! And six of them were screamers. (So called because they seem to scream to the top out of nowhere.) But then, phew! That unprecedented activity has settled down a bit since. In August, you had 12 climbers. Which is a lot but after July’s 15, it seemed less shocking. And only one screamer.
For September, still 12 climbers, five of them screamers– but! We expect to see screamers when the seasons turn and big holidays loom. So without further ado, let’s get to them.
September’s climbers and screamers
Listed with their current rank first:
#4 halloween home decor (screamer)
#5 candles, up from #28
#6 adult halloween costume (screamer)
#7 fairycore (screamer)
#9 3d printed, up from #40
#10 halloween shirts (screamer)
#11 personalized trick or treat bags (screamer)
#12 rug, up from #210
#13 christmas, up from #118
#16 digital prints, up from #67
#17 bracelet, up from #60
#19 storage organization, up from #41
By the way, Christmas came early for our US Etsy sellers too! A full month before Halloween: yikes. Let’s have a look at yours.
As early as it seems, Christmas searches got started even earlier last year. This September’s search volume matches last August’s. Oh boy: hope that doesn’t auger a mad scramble as we get closer.
In any case, just like last month’s report, there are way too many climbers to talk about. We know you’re busy. So let’s focus on your five screamers. None of these made August’s Top 1000, then in 30 days they shot to the top.
The US also had all but one of these. We figured out that “halloween home decor” is being promoted by Etsy. Let’s see what your stats look like, shall we?
Ranking 4th: halloween home decor
Way up Year on Year; you can thank Etsy for that.
And we do! Because that 93% Average CTR (click-through rate) is pretty excellent. Especially for an Etsy promotion featured on their homepage. Why?
Because most shoppers came to Etsy that day for something else. Then they got diverted by that enticing Etsy promo. Some weren’t as likely to click through though; they were shopping for other things that day. Still, they might be back! Especially given how high that CTR is. Because it signals purchase intent.
Quick tutorial: CTRs and “purchase intent”
New to online selling or eRank?
Click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers using a given keyword clicked on listings in their search results. We care about this because CTRs signal purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).
And if you can stick with us until the end here, we’ve got a treat for you. We’ll do a roundup of which of the UK’s top Etsy searches have the highest CTRs now. Let us know if you like it; if you do, we’ll keep doing them for you.
Ranking 6th: adult halloween costume
Interesting!
The US has this same screamer, yet their Search Trend graph is the opposite of yours. Year on Year, for them “adult halloween costume” is down by 46%. For you, it’s up by 63%! On the other hand, their CTR is higher. If Etsy’s doing a promo on the UK homepage, we bet shoppers are clicking just to get costume ideas! And hopefully, they’ll be back.
Because based on your search volume, it’s popular. And whereas US competition is fierce (over 141,000 listings using this keyword), yours is lovely: fewer than 10,000. Anyone here to find out what to sell on Etsy UK? Maybe add this one to a Keyword List for next year; let that tool track it for you.
Ranking 7th: fairycore
Frankly, we’re excited to look up this one. It’s your only screamer the US doesn’t share this month. We’ve seen “fairycore” before, but we can’t recall it ranking so high on any Top 20 list. So it’s off to Keyword Tool for us…
Sweet! Your spike of current shopper searches is higher than the US’s by a 1000. And competition from your fellow UK sellers is a fifth of theirs. As well, you have a larger-than-typical slice of the global shopper pie: over 20%.
For those not up on this niche style, here’s a worthy overview, thanks to the folks at Aesthetics Wiki.
“Fairycore, also known as Fairy Folk, is an Ethereal aesthetic that centres predominantly around fairy (alternatively spelled faerie) and elf mythology. Visuals include nature, soft pastels, butterflies, magic, flowers, soft animals like bunnies, and the vibe of springtime.”
A quick browse shows items range from clothing and jewelry to decor and garden to art – with side quests into fairycore grunge. And yes, it’s for adults. Its roots are in cottagecore, a style that’s had broad and sustained interest. So fairycore might be worth a look if you’re thirsting for inspiration. And “fairycore grunge” seems perfect for late fall and winter.
Just be sure before you take the plunge to research whether you can use “fairycore” or “fairycore grunge.” Either might be trademarked, as happened with “shabby chic,” which morphed into cottagecore.
And now, let’s turn to your last two Halloween screamers.
Ranking 10th: halloween shirts
Normally, the keywords we present here are as shoppers entered them in Etsy search. That is, we consider near matches, singular and plural forms individually. But while this one’s a screamer in plural form, “halloween shirt” ranked high for you in August: #63. So let’s make an exception and include near matches
And we see that plenty were shopping for this product last month and last year. So does it matter which you use? Not when it’s just the singular and plural forms. Because Etsy and search engines treat those the same.
That’s why the default in Keyword Tool is to include near matches. You can better assess demand for the product. Which by the way Year on Year is up 99% in the UK! Along with an excellent Average CTR: 104%.
And now, your final screamer of the month.
Ranking 11th: personalized trick or treat bags
The US had this identical screamer. We did a deep dive in that report if you want to check it out. So let’s just take a quick look at yours to see if it’s the same story.
Classic spike! Whenever you see one of these, we always advise not to act on it. Especially when chances are good the data was skewed by an Etsy promo. Which is all the more likely in this case: “personalized” is the American spelling.
The US results for this keyword led in turn to others which had better search trend history. Notably, “halloween tote bag.” Here’s what that one looks like for you.
Even with “Include Near Matches” selected, this one appears bleak for 2024. But that makes it perfect for a quick tutorial. And note: this method is also handy when a keyword’s competition is high and you need to niche down.
Niche down: a quick demo
Are you new to eRank? “Niche down” means identifying products you can rank for high enough in search for yours to be found. Here’s how to niche down. (Or discover which search terms shoppers have switched to using now.)
We scrolled down the Keyword Tool results page for “halloween tote bag” to the Keyword Ideas table. Next, we employed some helpful filters.
For match type, we had to play around to get the most relevant searches for this product. That’s a step worth doing. We didn’t want to see all keywords with the word “halloween.” Nor all the totes, nor all the bags. But if we narrowed down too much, we’d miss out. What to do?
The “Default” option will show us relevant related terms. Then we used the filter (circled here in lime green). In its drop-down, we entered two keywords, “halloween” and “bag.” And finally, to see the shopper searches that are trending highest now, we sorted for recency. Just click the “Search Trend” header, circled here in red.
The little Search Trend graphs show 15 months of search history for each keyword. Mouse over the bars and you’ll see pop-ups with search volume for any month you choose. (We data geeks at eRank love those trend graphs!)
And voila: for you in the UK, “halloween bag” is the best keyword to use for this item. It had 1,550 searches in August, and 2,250 in September. Ranked second by September search volume, “halloween tote bag” has 300. The next two, “halloween goodie bag” and “halloween gift bag,” only have 50 each. Are you looking for products to sell on Etsy? If this niche appeals, add these and “personalized trick or treat bags” to a Keyword List for next year.
And speaking of treats! Let’s get to that insider’s roundup of what your most promising keywords are now. That is, a list showing which of the UK’s top Etsy keywords have the highest CTRs.
Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now
Here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy? Then this lightning round is for you! Remember, high click-through rates indicate increased purchase intent. UK shoppers interested enough in what Etsy shows them in search results to click individual listings.
Note that of all our top marketplaces, Etsy has by far the most keywords with high CTRs. We aren’t sure why yet. But even on Etsy, CTRs of 125% or higher are rare. Also, we based these calculations on their search volume and clicks in September, our most recent full month of data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs may be, these top-ranked searches should be hot right now. Fingers crossed, we hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!
