What’s new Month on Month to eBay’s Top 20

We like to start with what we call climbers. These are the month’s Top 20 eBay searches that weren’t on the previous month’s Top 20 list. We do this because they are the shopper searches that have climbed highest the fastest. And while there is always some turnover, how much change varies quite a bit between marketplaces. Etsy’s norm is to have six to nine keywords new Month on Month to its Top 20. Amazon’s average is a bit lower: four to six that weren’t on the previous month’s list.

But eBay is surprisingly different. Its top shopper searches are typically far more stable. Several even keep their identical rank from one month to the next. On eBay, a turnover of three or four is about it.

Back in both April and May, eBay had four climbers each. In June, it only had three. July is the same: only three climbers. So we’ll look at those first. Then we’ll end with our analysis of eBay’s Top 500 to identify which products indicate the best purchase intent.

These eBay searches climbed highest the fastest in July

Here are the three climbers; we’ve listed them in order with their current rank first.

#12 rtx 3070, up from #32

#17 3080, up from #21

#20 camera, up from #23

As you can see, none of these had far at all to climb. And four others in July’s Top 20 kept the identical rank they had in June. One of those, nintendo switch, ranks fourth for the third month in a row. As we were saying, eBay trends are remarkably steadfast.

Ranking 12th: rtx 3070, up from #32

This is NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3070, a gaming graphics card. Here’s what it looks like in Keyword Tool.

On the left, a bar chart of eBay keyword stats for “rtx 3070” averaged over 12 months. The line chart depicts 15 months of US shoppers using this keyword to search eBay. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

Want to know how popular these NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards are on eBay? Three make July’s Top 20: 10th-ranked rtx 3080; this one ranked 12th; and 3080 in 17th place. There are five more just in the Top 50.

So, given how highly sought-after these are, the rtx 3070’s Average CTR – just 32% – seems startling. Especially to those of us used to Etsy’s CTRs (click-through rates). One so low for an Etsy top search– well, it just doesn’t happen. Yet it is the norm on eBay.

Click-through rates and purchase intent

If you’re new to online selling, are you wondering why we care so much about CTRs? It’s because shopper clicks and click-through rates are a useful indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, how close an online shopper is to making a purchase (as opposed to one who’s still browsing).

CTRs on both Amazon and eBay are typically much lower than Etsy’s. We data geeks at eRank are still theorizing as to why. In researching Amazon’s trend report this month, we found these stats from Amazon:

“Customers complete 28% of Amazon purchases in 3 minutes or less and 50% of purchases in less than 15 minutes.” Toogood, Mickey, “Amazon Selling Stats,” Amazon Selling Partner Blog, Grow Your Business, May 10, 2024

Shoppers who purchase in three minutes or less must arrive already knowing exactly what they want. The specificity of many of the top Amazon and eBay trending searches suggests the same. Compared to Etsy’s, more of their shoppers can tell by just the title and thumbnail whether they’re interested. And so, for example, those eBay buyers shopping for an RTX 3070? They may not need to click as many listings before they find what they want and purchase.

Please note though: this is just one theory. Another is that much of what eBay or Amazon serves them in search results doesn’t match their query. We’ve heard that frustrated shoppers on both platforms report search has gotten worse. That would certainly affect click-through rates.

Just to test, we typed “rtx 3070” into eBay search, selecting “new” and “open box” as filters. The seventh-ranked listing was for an NVIDIA Quadro M4000. These are not the same. The M4000 is five years older; the RTX 3070 substantially outperforms the M4000. Those frustrated shoppers might have a point.

Ranking 17th: 3080, up from #21

Speaking of RTX, here’s another of those, the 3080.

On the left, a bar chart of eBay keyword stats for “3080” averaged over 12 months. The line chart depicts 15 months of US shoppers using this keyword to search eBay.

This one’s down 27% Year on Year. The RTX 3070 was also down a bit YoY. However, that may not reflect a decline in popularity with eBay shoppers. Rather, it could be due to there being fewer eBay searches overall.

The top product on eBay a year ago in July (“nintendo switch”) got 210,820 searches. This July, “ps5” reached the top spot with just 176,780 searches: 16% fewer. And it’s not just the No. 1 products. Ranking 20th in July 2023, “xbox 360” had 95,700 searches. July 2024’s No. 20 is “camera” with 75,680: 21% less than last year’s 20th-ranked search. A falling tide lowers all boats?

Ranking 20th: camera, up from #21

And speaking of No. 20 camera, let’s have a look.

On the left, a bar chart of eBay keyword stats for “camera” averaged over 12 months. The line chart depicts 15 months of US shoppers using this keyword to search eBay.

Finally! Here is a climber that’s well up Year on Year: by 38%! And of these three climbers, it also has the best Average CTR: 37%. Not all that great, but wait! When calculated just for July? It’s 150%!! (Geez, we’ve exceeded our quota of exclamation points: oh dear.) But we’re happy to see it for you camera sellers out there.

And with that, we’re done with July’s climbers. To close, we’ll give you an insider’s look at which eBay trending searches have high CTRs now. Let’s see if we can shed some light on whether specificity (how niche they are) plays any part.

eBay trending searches with 100%+ CTRs in July

Here to discover what’s selling best on eBay now? Then this is for you! We’ll do a lightning round of eBay’s most popular products that had the highest CTRs in July. Which means these should have the most promising purchase intent on eBay now.

Note though that most of these shopper searches will be too broad and/or competitive to rank for. So if you’re researching products to sell on eBay, just niche down from these.

Tip: Are you new to eRank? “Niche down” means identifying products you can rank for high enough in search for yours to be found. Here’s how to niche down. Enter a broad keyword (say, “camera,”) in Keyword Tool, then scroll down to the “Keyword Ideas” table. There you’ll find lots of ways to filter and sort your results to reveal opportunities. Here’s a short YouTube video we made to show you how.

Remember, CTRs above 100% are rare on eBay. We even see high-ranking eBay shopper searches having CTRs in the single digits. Here’s an example. Perennially-popular “pokemon cards” ranks 49th in July, yet its July CTR for the month is only three percent. Or take #209 “necklace.” Its 21,180 searches in July garnered just 76 clicks. So a CTR of 100% or more is fantastically good for eBay.

From the Top 500 of eBay’s most popular products in July

As was true in June, in July’s entire Top 100, there are only three searches with a CTR of 100%+ for the month. As mentioned, the first is #20 camera with its remarkable 150% CTR. Ranked #46: roblox account with 119%. (We’ll just point out here that some of these shopper searches may cause an eBay seller problems. Whether it be prohibited by Roblox, eBay or IP rights, please look before you leap on any of these leads.) The third is #98 airpods pro with a July CTR of 117%. And from here on, we’ll only shout out specific CTRs if they exceed 140%.

These shopper searches rank between 101-250. At #124 meta quest 2; #149 jordan; #152 mm2 (this is Murder Mystery 2, a game). Next, at #166 nintendo 64 has a 150% CTR for July. After that, there’s #179 omega, then three in a row with 150% CTR! #181 leica; #238 anime defenders; and #244 valorant account.

These rank 251-500. #253 zippo; #266 ipad pro; #286 pixel 8 pro; and with a July CTR of 150%, #296 s22 ultra. At #313 nintendo ds, and then at #315 microsoft surface with a 149% CTR. Next are two more of NVIDIA’s graphics cards: #335 rtx 2070 and at #336 2080. And then we have another keyword with a 150% CTR: #355 milwaukee (the tool brand). Next, at #418 dior; and at #422 surron. Then a frequent flyer on this list, always with a sky-high CTR: #445 gi joe with 150%. And the last one in the Top 500 is #469 hp victus.

Reminder: these CTRs are drawn from their search volume and clicks in July. Which means that regardless of what their 12-mo average CTRs may be, these keywords are hot right now. We hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!
