As always, we’ll begin our analysis with what’s on this Top 20 list that was not on last month’s. It’s one way to measure how much instability there is in current trends. Benchmarks: a turnover of fewer than five new is stagnant. (On Etsy, we only saw this early in the pandemic.) More than nine new is quite a volatile rate of change.

Well, hello Canada! Gone it appears are the days that your Top 20 conformed hand and glove to the US list. Whether you’ve launched out of the nest by choice or Etsy’s given you a push – or both? You’re on your own now.

Back in March, you had 12 climbers, five of which hadn’t made your previous month’s Top 1000. We call those screamers because they seem to scream into the Top 20 out of nowhere. And five was a LOT.

Now here you are in April with 14 climbers, four of them screamers. Such turnover suggests many Canadian shoppers suddenly searching Etsy for many products they weren’t just a month ago. So let’s get right to them, shall we?

Mother’s Day

We’ll grant you, three of these are due to a predictably-popular keyword we expect to see here every year. As a holiday-related search, Mother’s Day is second only to Halloween on Etsy. (And Halloween is HUGE on Etsy.) In fact, no other holiday keywords made 2023’s Annual Top 20 list. “Halloween” ranked 9th and “mothers day gifts” took 20th place.

Note though: that data was drawn from Etsy’s US shoppers. And you’ve got us wondering now: maybe you’ll be different this year? We shall see anon about Halloween.

Certainly, Mother’s Day has been big for you. Last year, “mothers day gifts” (“gifts” plural) was your No. 1 keyword with 37,850 shopper searches. One related keyword, “mothers day gift,” made your Top 20. Together, the two totaled 54,650 searches.

This year, you have three Mother’s Day-related keywords in your Top 20. But together they only added up to 39,200 searches. Huh: that’s down 28% Year on Year. And with just 15,800 searches, your top Mother’s Day keyword has been relegated to second place. First place was snatched by this screamer.

No. 1 laser engraving bundle

Here it is in Keyword Tool.

The UK had this same screamer, just not quite so high; for them it ranked in 8th place overall. But you are not alone; Australia also has “laser engraving bundle” as their No. 1 this month. If Etsy’s AI is promoting these, we figure it has its reasons. However, that one-month spike on the 15-mo Search Trend graph above right gives us pause. So, for those of you looking for products to sell on Etsy, hold off on this one. Maybe add it to a Keyword List and let that tool monitor it for you.

And while we’re on the subject of arcane searches with the word “engraving”… We are going to advise that you do with same with your 12th-ranked screamer “3d illusion engraving.”

Screamers with no prior search volume over 15 months are seldom a good bet.

Not so with your other two April screamers, though. Here is No. 5 “mothers day gifts.”

As you can see, search volume for holiday keywords is not just ahead of the big day. In June 2023, “mothers day gifts” still got 1,200 searches! And another 50 that July. That is what you want to see in a screamer: demonstrable search history. And bear in mind that this keyword’s search volume is being siphoned off by near matches.

No. 10 anniversary gift

Here is your final April screamer; it ranked 10th overall with Canada’s Etsy shoppers in April.

As you can see, it’s got search history. Erratic yes, but other factors compensate. For one, this is a roomy niche. By which we mean, lots of products make suitable anniversary gifts. And not just the traditional ones like paper for the first anniversary or tin for the tenth. (Tip: if you didn’t know about these, look them up. You might already stock items in your Etsy shop that work!)

Another exceptional asset “anniversary gift” has: that Average CTR of 112%! A 12-mo click-through rate above 100% is powerful indication of “purchase intent.”

Purchase intent

Are you new to online selling?

Click-through rates reflect how often shoppers using a given keyword click on listings in their search results. We care about these because clicks are among the indicators signaling “purchase intent.” That is, how close a shopper might be to buying as opposed to one who is just browsing.

Gifts

Etsy’s been vocal about its promoting gift buying. As we’re writing this, here’s what we’re seeing at the top of your Etsy homepage, Canada.

“Gift” appears eight times! And we’re certainly in favor. You have 68 searches with the word “gift” in your Top 1000. That’s up from 43 in April 2023. Hope it’s helping you make sales!

No. 17 groomsmen gifts

Speaking of gifts and handsome CTRs, here is your April climber “groomsmen gifts,” up from ranking #677 in March.

Last month, you had “wedding gift” as a screamer. Ranked 20th, it was way up both Year on Year and Month on Month. And it had this same happy green trend-alert banner. Last year, this keyword only began climbing in May and peaked in August. We hoped it was getting an early start; it’s another that’s a roomy niche to get in on. But it sank back down to rank #750 in April.

On the other hand, this month we have “groomsmen gifts.” And it’s yet another of those roomy niches we like! We bet many of you have products that could be suitable.

And check out those Keyword Stats! A 12-mo CTR of 107%. Competition from your fellow Canadian sellers rated green for go! Only 10,570 listings are using this keyword. Also, over on the right, the line chart’s just as promising. In 15 months, “groomsmen gifts” has only fallen below 4,000 searches twice.

Also popular with Canada’s Etsy shoppers

Last month we mentioned we’d be watching this March screamer for you. And indeed, in a month your other four screamers have dropped back down substantially in rank. But not this one!

No. 16 furniture

Yep, it’s got the bright green banner telling us it’s been popular this week (the first week in May).

On the left, a bar chart depicting Canada’s keyword stats on Etsy for “furniture.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Canadian shoppers over the past 15 months.

In March we were concerned about you guys getting into this niche because of shipping costs. Since then, we’ve heard from furniture sellers that Etsy customers readily pay high shipping fees for the right piece. And everything else about this search looks good. While “furniture” bottomed out two Februarys in a row, otherwise it does well. And that 12-mo average CTR of 108% indicates excellent purchase intent.

Tip! New to eRank? Don’t be discouraged if you scroll down in Keyword Tool to the related searches table and see something like this.

Because just by changing up the filters and sorting different ways you can find so many opportunities! Here, we made just one tiny change: we clicked the Search Trend header to sort by what’s trending now.

See the difference? One keyword popped out: “wabi sabi furniture.” While the meaning of wabi sabi is wonderfully nuanced, think of it as a synonym for shabby chic. And it’s not just popular with Canada’s Etsy shoppers right now. It’s also got a 12-mo click-through rate of 129%!

Round-up of Canada’s top Etsy keywords with high CTRs in April 2024

Speaking of high CTRs, this year we’ve begun wrapping up some of our trend reports with these. Now, you likely won’t be able to rank for the highest of them; many will be too broad. Instead, use those as indicators of what your Etsy shoppers are currently most motivated to buy. (Remember, click-through rates indicate purchase intent.)

Then, just as we did above with furniture, take the broad searches into Keyword Tool to “niche down.” That is, identify long-tail keywords for products you do have a chance to rank for in search. “Wabi sabi furniture” is a perfect example of a long-tail keyword for the broad keyword furniture. Whether you’re researching SEO or products to sell on Etsy, you can use that same procedure.

Your Top 125 Etsy shopper searches with 125%+ CTRs this month

Click-through rates exceeding 125% are exceedingly good! So these are the best of the best right now. From the Top 50, we’ve listed them in rank order beginning with laser engraving bundle (150% CTR!). Mugs; 3d illusion engraving (another with a 150% CTR); rug; ring with 149% and taylor swift with 150%. Next, four in a row: jewelry; wedding dress; digital prints; then bridal shower games with 150%. Finishing out the Top 50 are another four in a row: digital planner (150%!); helldivers; lamp; and lightburn engraving png with a CTR of 149%.

Ranked between 50 and 100, you have twitch overlay; name necklace; stardew valley. Then engagement rings; paintings; and these three all with 149% CTRs: wedding invites, clothing, crochet. Next are ferrari jacket and laser engraving file, both with 148%. Two in a row with 149%: templates and tote bag. Then beaded necklace; mermaid; and #79 tea has 148%. The last two in your Top 100: #88 custom portraits with a 132% CTR and #95 sunglasses with 148%.

Finishing out your Top 125, you have two in a row with 148% CTRs: mehndi decor and vtuber. Then at #110 you have fountain pen with 147% and gold filled ring with 144%. And at #114 wedding band set has a CTR of 148%. Then prints, followed by six more keywords with 148% CTRs: abaya, bathroom, chalk bucket, chatgpt, emotes, and ranking #125 ffxiv.

Note that these CTRs are calculated just for April, which means they’re hot now. Their 12-mo average CTRs will most likely be different. Also, just our usual word to the wise: at least a handful of these may be trademarked. But most are not; we hope some of those prove to be profitable leads for you!
