First, an update on September’s No. 1

Since we started writing monthly reports for Amazon (Aug. 2023), “outdoor plastic straw rug” made every Amazon Top 20. In September it reached No. 1. Here’s a quick update on how it’s doing now.

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for the Amazon search term “outdoor plastic straw rug.” The line chart shows its trend performance with Amazon shoppers over the past 15 months. NOTE: All search-volume figures in this report are based on eRank’s best estimates.

Well, the big news is that “outdoor plastic straw rug” has dropped completely out of Amazon’s Top 20. It ranks #32 now. Which, if you’re more accustomed to Etsy’s Top 20 turnover, doesn’t sound exactly earth shattering. However, Etsy’s Top 20 list is way more volatile than Amazon’s, and only getting more so. For the past year, it’s averaged nine to twelve keywords new Month on Month. The top searches on Amazon and eBay (especially eBay!) are way more stable.

Honestly, we’re glad to see the back of “outdoor plastic straw rug.” It’s always had an abysmal Average CTR (click-through rate). Just 24%: wow. While Amazon’s CTRs do run lower than Etsy’s, even for Amazon 24% is shockingly low. (We’ll talk more about CTRs in a bit.)

Amazon’s top keywords climbing highest fastest this month

Amazon’s Top 20 turnover averages about five new Month on Month. “Climbers” is our term for current Top 20 searches that weren’t on last month’s Top 20 list. The reason we focus on these? Because in terms of climbing the ranks, these queue jumpers have outperformed their fellows. They indicate way more shoppers searching for stuff they weren’t as much just 30 or so days ago.

For October, Amazon has six climbers. A slightly higher rate of change – but expected. In October, Amazon hosted its fourth annual “Big Deal Days,” a 48-hour sale for Prime members. Held seven+ weeks ahead of Black Friday / Cyber Monday sales, it’s intended to get the jump on gift buying.

And according to Amazon’s reporting to its 3P sellers:

“More Prime members shopped this year’s Prime Big Deal Days compared to last year’s event, with higher sales and more items sold during the two-day event than any previous October shopping event.” Amazon, “Prime Big Deal Days was our biggest October shopping event ever,” Seller News, October 31, 2024

The sale was marketed as featuring early holiday deals from popular brands and categories. So we’ve been eager to get this data. See if we could spot what the hottest gifts and Black Friday buys might be this year. Without further ado then, these are October’s six climbers, listed in order with their current rank first.

#7 lego, up from #27 in September

#10 halloween costumes, up from #74

#12 creatine, up from #30

#14 water bottle, up from #23

#18 mouse pad, up from #22

#19 xbox controller, up from #42

Next, we’ll see what light that Keyword Tool can shed upon these six. Then, here at the end, we’ll see what Amazon’s top 250 keywords tell us about what might be selling best now.

Ranking 7th: lego, up from #27

“Lego” is a frequent flyer on Amazon’s Top 20 lists.

“Lego” is slightly up over its performance on July’s Prime Day (which actually lasts at least a week). But it is down Year on Year – albeit only 13%. (A drop from a million+ searches down 758,360 just seems like a lot.) We expect “lego” is already on its way back up to the two million+ it had last November and December.

Ranking 10th, halloween costumes, up from #74

Given our being used to how HUGE Halloween is on Etsy, we were shocked last month by Amazon. No Halloween searches in its September Top 20? The September before, Amazon’s No. 2 search had been “halloween decorations” with 1,171,780 searches. This September? “Halloween decorations” was still the highest-ranking Halloween-related search. But it only ranked 40th. And Year on Year, it was down 70%.

So, we’re eager to see how October’s No. 10 “halloween costumes” looks.

Ugh: that Average CTR stat: only 54%! Now that’s scary. Otherwise, it’s not terrible. But it is down 23% Year on Year. Maybe more Halloween fans have figured out that Etsy’s best for Halloween?

Ranking 12th, creatine, up from #30

Now this is more like it!

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for the search term “creatine” on Amazon. The line chart shows its trend performance with Amazon shoppers over the past 15 months.

All the bars on the bar chart are green – and our first stellar Average CTR! In case you’re reading along on a small screen, that’s 94%! And when calculated just for the month of October, it’s even better: 106%! For Amazon, that’s exceptionally high.

And over on the right, the 15-mo search history is the steadiest yet. It peaks in January; haha, creatine’s a fitness-related product, so probably New Year resolutions at play. Even without that January spike, search volume is fairly steadily excellent. The lowest it’s gone was around 320,000 searches/mo last spring.

Ranking 13th, water bottle, up from #23

Even better in some significant ways!

For one, unlike “creatine” we think more of you might be able to get in on this niche? (Selling consumables on Amazon as a small business strikes us as daunting, risk exposure-wise: brrr!) Also, we know many of you are creatives; could water bottles offer you some scope to compete?

We took a quick look, having scrolled down the page to water bottle’s Keyword Ideas table.

A couple here could be of interest. “Pink water bottle” had over 3,000 searches in October; 5,245 Average Searches; and an Average CTR of 102%. And how about the fourth one down, “cute water bottle.” That had 1,380 searches in October; averages 4,736 searches and has a darling CTR of 118%!

Another one that’s intriguing is the last one, “flat water bottle.” Those have 4,510 Average Searches and a truly remarkable Average CTR of 132%! We googled. This seems like a product that could lend itself well to painting or otherwise customizing / personalizing?

And by the way, there were literally a thousand of these “Keyword Ideas” in this table. So, if you’re here for ideas of what to sell on Amazon, have a look!

Ranking 18th, mouse pad, up from #22

Another Amazon product niche in which we could see an artistic eye might give you an edge.

Close to half a million searches in October alone! And quite a worthy Average CTR of 96%. By the way, are you new to online selling? If so, by now you may be wondering why we care so much about CTRs (click through rates). It’s because on marketplaces online, these are among the indicators of purchase intent.

FORMAT AS QUOTE. Tip! Click-through data reflects how many times online shoppers using a given keyword clicked listings in their search results. This matters because CTRs can signal purchase intent. That is, a customer more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).

And now, our final climber.

Ranking 19th: xbox controller, up from #42

Have you heard that, whether willingly or not, more PC gamers have been switching to Xbox controllers?

On the left, a bar chart depicting US keyword stats for the search term “xbox controller” on Amazon. The line chart shows its trend performance with Amazon shoppers over the past 15 months.

This one is up both Year on Year and Month on Month. Not by much but note that between October and November last year, search volume rose by 300,000. Up 83% in just 30 days. T’is the season. Buckle up!

And that’s it! As promised, we’ll finish with a lightning round of Amazon’s most popular products that show the most promising purchase intent.
