G’day, Australians! We have to say, we love looking at your data. Yours often diverges from the rest. Of course you’re in a different hemisphere, so seasonal trends are different. And we’ve noticed that some Christmas shopping searches tend to climb closer to the date for you. Sometimes though, you just march to a different drum. And for us data geeks, that’s fun.

Take December’s 14th-ranked search, lingerie. It’s the first time that search has made an Etsy Top 20 in the US, UK, Canada, or yours, until now. We love seeing shopper searches make their first summit.

As we begin, here’s a suggestion. While December is still fresh on your minds, we recommend adding some of December’s top searches to a Keyword List. Then revisit them in August; see how they’re doing. Of course, the seasonal ones won’t show much activity. But there aren’t all that many of those here.

Most are products that were sought and bought as gifts. Prioritize the shopper searches with high click-through rates; they indicate the best purchase intent. (For anyone new to online selling, we’ll explain more about that shortly.) Here at the end, we’ll analyze your top 250 keywords in December. See what they tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy in Down Under now.

These Top 20 searches climbed highest fastest

As always, we’ll start with your climbers: Top 20 keywords not on last month’s Top 20 list. These hiked farthest most recently. You’ve got 11 new Month on Month; high for sure but expected this time of year. And same as last month and the one before, three are screamers. (So-called because they scream to the top seemingly out of nowhere. Just a month back, these didn’t even crack the Top 1000.)

No. 2 gift (screamer: didn’t make November’s Top 1000 – but “gifts” ranked 3rd)

No. 4 mugs, up from #79

No. 5 pokemon (screamer)

No. 9 3d printed, up from #69

No. 11 crochet, up from #635

No. 12 taylor swift (screamer)

No. 14 lingerie, up from #258

No. 16 journal, up from #694

No. 17 posters, up from #39 but “poster” ranked 13th)

No. 18 digital, up from #41 (but “digital prints” ranked 1st!)

No. 19 keychain, up from #100

We need to whittle this list down to leave time for your insiders’ Monthly CTR Roundup. For a change, let’s choose them based on climbers with the best CTRs, either 12-mo. Average or for December. Because they show signs of purchase intent.

Are you new to selling online? On marketplace sites, click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how many times shoppers clicked listings in their search results. Therefore, CTRs are an indicator of “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper more likely searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one who’s still just browsing).

Let’s get to them!

Ranked 4th: mugs, up from #79 in November

Mug singular ranked 80th in November. So either way, this is a climber for you. For the US, UK, and Canada, mug/s is a Top 20 frequent flyer. Here’s yours.

Left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “mugs” and its near matches. The line chart shows their combined search trend performance over the past 15 months. The moss green Trend Alert banner indicates they’ve been popular with Australian shoppers this week (through January 14). We want to gauge shopper interest, so we opted (where circled) in the bar chart to include near matches. By the way, anyone new to eRank? Ever wondered what exactly that option includes? Just scroll down the results page to the table and select the tab labeled “Near Matches” (circled in red).

As is often the case, here it is just the singular and plural forms of our search. But not always! Sometimes you might even find variations of the keyword that haven’t occurred to you to use; it’s worth checking.

And as we can see, both mug and mugs have unusually lovely Average (12-mo) CTRs. 135% for mug and 127% for mugs: nice. And calculated for December, mugs’ monthly CTR is 120%, and 56th-ranked mug has 148%! Definitely a candidate to add to a Keyword List; these don’t just trend at the holidays.

Competition from your fellow Aussie sellers is stiff of course. You’ll need to niche down. Some leads: seven other mug searches made December’s Top 1000.

  • personalised mug
  • ceramic mug
  • custom name mugs
  • pet mugs
  • giant coffee mug
  • flower mugs
  • wicked musical mug

Good hunting!

Ranked 11th: crochet, up from #635

There are 15 shopper searches in your Top 1000 with the word “crochet.” We were surprised! The US and UK have just four each; Canada has nine. But you lot rule! So let’s see why “crochet” ranked so low in November.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “crochet.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert indicates it’s popular with Australian shoppers this week (through January 14, 2025).

Huh: guess the broad term “crochet” is just a volatile keyword. And the related searches seem to be, too (we took a quick look). But “crochet” does have a monthly CTR for December of 130%, which is why it made this short list.

Ranked 14th: lingerie, up from #258

As mentioned up top, we’ve never seen “lingerie” on any country’s monthly Top 20 list before. Let’s take a peek, shall we?

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “lingerie.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert indicates it’s popular with Australian shoppers this week (through January 14, 2025).

First, we checked that spike (above right) a year ago in November 2023. High as it appears, “lingerie” wasn’t quite high enough to get a spot in that month’s Top 20. And it didn’t make December 2023’s either. Last year, lingerie stayed high through February for Valentine’s Day. Will it again this year?

Notably, in 15 months search volume hasn’t dropped below 1,000 a month. It certainly has both a lovely Average CTR (110%!) and low competition from your fellow Aussie sellers. So if you’re here for ideas of what to sell on Etsy, this niche looks worth researching.

Ranked 18th: digital, up from #41

“Digital” has a December CTR of 129%! Let’s have a look at the rest of its stats.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “digital.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months.

Decisively up Year on Year: by 46%. Of course “digital” is almost too broad to be helpful, apart from reflecting your Aussie Etsy shoppers’ interest. Last month, we were surprised “digital prints” was your No. 1 search. That placement was so unusual for the peak of holiday gift shopping. It’s always been something like “gifts,” in Australia and in the US, UK, and Canada.

So we did a bit of digging…

These were your top five searches just over a year ago in November 2023.

  1. gift for her
  2. wall art
  3. personalized gift
  4. gift for him
  5. gifts

Back then, the first shopper search containing the word “digital” was “digital planner,” all the way down at #56. “Digital prints” was #72, and the single-word search “digital” was #657.

A month later, December 2023, the first appearance of any digital search was again “digital planner,” up a little to #47. “Digital” was up more: from #657 to #221. But “digital prints” had dropped well down to #386. What a difference a year makes, eh? Now “digital prints” is No. 7; “digital” is No. 18.

It’s also interesting that a year ago in November, your No. 2 was “wall art.” This past November, wall art was No. 17, with digital prints now in the top spot. And in December, No. 7 digital prints was still outranking #10 wall art.

So: will digital prints take more and more of wall art’s market share in Australia? We’ll see, but another factor bears mentioning: for December, digital prints has a monthly CTR of 94%. Which is decent but wall art’s CTR is 141%!

Ranked 19th: keychain, up from #41

Speaking of phenomenal December CTRs, keychain’s is 150%! Here’s the rest of its data.

On the left, a bar chart depicting Australia’s keyword stats on Etsy for “keychain.” The line chart shows its search trend performance with Australia’s Etsy shoppers over the past 15 months. The Trend Alert indicates it’s popular with Australian shoppers this week (through January 14, 2025).

Keychain has been a frequent flyer on your Top 20 for years. Albeit somewhat erratic: in November, it was up Year on Year.  Then in December, it’s more than 50% down. Its 15-mo high was in January last year. We’ll see how it does this coming month: fingers crossed.

It’s a product with a low barrier of entry. That is, materials are cheap; skill required to make them are basic and easily acquired. Therefore, it’s pretty amazing that Etsy Competition from Australian sellers isn’t higher. (Competition is well into the red zone in the US, UK, and Canada!) There are only 32,126 Australian listings using “keychain.” And even including near-matches, not many more: 32,706.

Quick tutorial: how to niche down from a broad keyword

And look what happens to that competition when we scrolled down to keychain’s Keyword Ideas table.

We clicked “Broad” as the Keyword Match (circled here in yellow). That shows us results with the word “keychain/s.” To see what’s trending most recently, we clicked the “Search Trend” header (circled in lavender.)

Second-highest is “film roll keychain.” It got 1,750 searches in December. It has a 12-mo CTR of 96%, and best of all, Etsy Competition below 20 listings! Not to mention that it’s got a stunning monthly CTR of 146% for December!

And speaking of sky-high December CTRs, time for your Monthly CTR Roundup! We’ll analyze your Top 250 keywords to determine the highest CTRs in December (our last full month of data). Are you here to find out what’s selling best on Etsy now? Then this lightning round is for you!

Roundup: Australia’s top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now

As mentioned earlier, of all the marketplaces we cover, Etsy has the most keywords with high CTRs. Even on Etsy though, CTRs above 125% are rare. Keep in mind too that these calculations are drawn exclusively from their December data. Therefore, regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs are, some of these keywords should still be popular with shoppers now. Add the seasonal searches to a Keyword List to revisit ahead of 2025’s holiday shopping season. We hope some of these prove to be profitable leads for you!

One last thing before we begin. Some of these shopper searches could cause an Etsy seller problems. Whether they be protected by intellectual property rights or prohibited by Etsy, please look before you leap!

Ranking 1-50

Australia, you have seven qualifying keywords in your Top 20! Way more than the rest! (Canada had three; the US just two; and the UK none!) They are: #5 pokemon with a 150% CTR for December; #10 wall art (141%); crochet (130%); #15 candles (149%); and a trio. At #18-20, they are digital (129%), keychain (150%) and baby gift (138%). From here, to help keep this as readable as we can, we’ll only shout out CTRs above 145%: wildly high.

Next in your Top 50, a sextet! Ranked #27-32: jewelry gift, wall decor, taylorswift (148%), mystery box pokemon (also 148%), bracelet (149%) and charms. Another CTR high flyer ranks #35: y2k with 149%. Then there’s #37 candelabra at 149%, #42 belt (148%) and #47 charm bracelet.

Ranking 51-100

Straight out of the gate, a pair at #51-52: home decor and pet portrait (it has 149%). Skip just one and next you have a quintet, all with December CTRs of 148%! At #54-58, they are prom dress, maplestory, mug, miniature, and aboriginal art. Again, skip just one and next is a pair ranked #60-61: tet (with 147%) and van cleef (148%).

Then we keep skipping just one in between for these next three, all singletons and all with CTRs above 147%. They are #63 lana del rey; #65 watch; and #67 splatoon. Skip just one again for the pair at #69-70: phone case and car seat covers, both with 148% CTRs.

At #75 is arcane merch; skip two and at #78 there’s flight simulator with 148%. Also with 148% is #80 plotter.  Skip two and you have #83 twitch panels. Skip three and at #87 is katana with a CTR for the month of 148%. And that’s it: no more qualifiers from #88 all the way to #114!

Ranking 101-150

We go from that desert to a lovely pool of high CTRs, the quintet at #114-118. First is film roll keychain (hey, we spotted this one when we did your niche-down tutorial); that one has 146%. The rest: chess set, cross stitch, cross necklace (148%) and headphone stand. Skip just two for the trio at #121-123, all with CTRs above 146%. They are supernote a6x2 case, slaanesh, and stretchy key lanyard.

Then we have to skip five, but that takes us to a dozen straight, ten of which have CTRs above 145%. So, just for these 12, we’ll indicate the two keywords that don’t. From #129-140: aurora poster, bezel ring, wingspan, wedding gifts (128%), wooden keyboard, airpod case, altar table, aesthetic stickers, 3d printer files, acrylic sign (138%), tf2, and twitch emote.

And of the last of this Top 150, only two have CTRs too low to qualify. And all that do, have CTRs of 146%! From 142-145, a quartet: tshirt, vision board stickers, personalised pokemon card, and picnic basket. Skip one and at #147 is preserved flowers in vase blue. Again skip one and there’s a trio at #149-151: product photography, protein shaker, and ps3.

Ranking 151-200

This section begins with the last of that last trio, #151 ps3, with a December CTR of 146%. Then skip one and we have a singleton at #154: iridescent; it’s got a CTR of 150%! Again skip just one and next there’s an octet, all but one of which have 146% CTRs. So again, we’ll just shout out the one that doesn’t. From #155-162, they are hoodies aop, book sleeve (with 138%), cessna switch, dice, f1 merch, deltarune, dayz, and dd.

Skip one for the trio at #164-166, all three with CTRs of 146%: mlp, custom necklace, and clock.  Skip two then a pair at #169-170, also with 146%: ogryn, and genshin impact. Next, a couple singletons: #172 teacher gift and at #174 template, which has a 147% CTR. Skip ahead for another trio, all with CTRs above 146%; at #177-179: japan, gundam keychain, and dog gifts.

At #181 and 183, a couple singletons with 146% CTRs: the story of civilization set, and porsche poster. Skip one and there’s a trio: #185-187 folding knife, fivem car pack (146%), and sapphire ring (147%). Skip ahead two for another trio, this one at #194-196: makeroomforkids (all one word, with a CTR of 146%), matcha bowl, and finally pug, also with 146%.

Ranking 201-550

Another section off like a shot: #201-202 christmas pregnancy announcement and cap, both with December CTRs of 146%. And so has the next one: it’s #209 tetrahedrite. And the next one! #211 vodka lava lamp.

And we’re on a roll, because so do the next seven! They are #218-219 italian charm bracelet and keycap; #221 lanyard; #223 kaeya; #227 wallet; #231 attack on titan, and #235 techwear. Then #236 opal rings has 145%. The next two singletons also have 145% CTRs: #240 selenite; and #242 sapphire. Skip ahead one and we finish with the trio at #244-246: cat crochet, camera (145%), and christmas decorations.

And with that, we wish all our seller friends Down Under a very Happy New Year! We hope this next year is your best yet.
