Here at eRank, we’re back with Australia’s top Etsy keywords. Let us take the guesswork out of your Etsy SEO and product research. We’ll show you which searches were most popular with Australia’s Etsy shoppers. Then we’ll analyze what these trending keywords tell us about what’s selling best on Etsy in Australia now.Reading time: 14 minutesTip: See what Australia’s top Etsy keywords were yesterday, as well as what’s trending on dozens of other marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, and Google Shopping.
July’s Top 20 Etsy keywordsBut it’s not. On Etsy, a turnover of nine or more suggests volatility. Lots more shoppers searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just a month ago. So, 13 new is a lot. And five of them are what we fondly call screamers. Because they scream into the Top 20 seemingly out of nowhere; these failed to crack June’s Top 1000.And speaking of screamers… All four countries we write about here have this same screamer this month. Here’s what yours looks like.
Want to read about the curious case of the Bruno Mars screamers? The long version is in our US report (their Top 4 searches were all Bruno Mars). The UK and Canada have the same three Bruno Mars screamers as you do. The tl;dr is that Bruno Mars still has lots of fans. And he’s currently on a three-continent tour supporting a new album expected out this month. However! all of that is moot. Now as you know, we are eRank’s data geeks; none of us are attorneys. Let alone intellectual-property attorneys. Therefore, we cannot advise you. However, a word to the wise: warning! (As in: “Warning: Beware of trademarked terms. This report may contain keywords that are trademarked. USPTO Trademark Database”).Top Etsy searches: July’s climbers These 13 are your shopper searches that climbed highest the fastest in July. We’ve listed them in order with their current rank first.#4 bruno mars (nowhere in June’s Top 1000)#5 bruno mars merch (nowhere in June’s Top 1000)#6 prints, up from #71#7 keycaps, up from #73#9 wall decor, up from #252#11 t shirts, up from #417#12 mug, up from #25#13 laser engraving file, up from #21#14 bruno mars shirt (nowhere in June’s Top 1000)#15 halloween (nowhere in June’s Top 1000)#16 mugs (nowhere in June’s Top 1000)#17 jewelry, up from #204#18 home decor, up from #24For the reasons mentioned, this will be the last you’ll hear from us here about Bruno Mars. And for the sake of brevity (we know you’re busy!) we won’t say much about five of the others. Three of them narrowly missed last month’s Top 20. “Mug” is only up from #25 in June; “laser engraving file” from #21; “home decor” was #24.Two of them, “mug” and “home decor” are frequent flyers on your Top 20 lists. About “laser engraving file” though, we do harbor doubts.Ranking 13th: laser engraving file, up from #21 Have a look: anything here seem weird to you?
To us, it’s mostly that pie chart on the right. Being data geeks, we see a lot of pie charts. And we think this one is too evenly-divided among too many countries to reflect an organic shopper search. (Especially for an English-language search!)Nevertheless, “laser engraving file” and related keywords have appeared before on some 2024 Etsy Top 20 lists. Indeed, Canada has this identical one in their Top 20 this month, too. We’re baffled. Laser engraving has been around since the late 1970s and its first use was to create art on wood. Laser engraving software came out in 1996. But before April 2024, we haven’t seen this or related searches charting so high on Etsy.Who knows, though. We found this LinkedIn article published August 9, 2024 that analyzes the US laser engraver market.
“The increasing demand for personalized and customized products, advancements in laser technology, and the growing adoption of laser engraving in various industries are the key factors driving the market growth.” Spark Brilliance Marketing Team, “United States Laser Engraver Market By Applications,” LinkedIn article, August 9, 2024And we all know how gigantic the personalized and customized niche is on Etsy! Maybe these laser-engraver searches will continue to catch on and rise. Just as 3D printing (which originated back in the 1980s) did on Etsy a few years ago. We shall see!Faux climbers: prints and mugsNow, these two searches appear to have climbed far higher than they did. While sixth-ranked “prints” was #71 last month, “print” (singular) ranked 19th. So, not really a climber. (And, ouch, now “print” has dropped to #358.) But there are 16 art print-related listings in your Top 1000, so this category remains a healthy one for you. And the same goes for 16th-ranked “mugs.” That one is even one of your screamers this month. Far from the norm though. Typically, screamers are either early seasonal (like your #15 halloween this month). Or they are flukes. Some are single-month spikes; these we always suggest you hold off from acting upon until we see what develops. But none of that is the case for “mugs.” This isn’t about climbing. Quite the opposite: mugs just bottomed out for no good reason in June.
The norm is for both mug and mugs to rank quite high for you. And indeed, “mug” singular ranks 12th this month. And it’s far from the first time both have made your Top 20. “Mugs” has only dropped out of your Top 1000 once in 15 months. And that was in June, when it sank to 100 searches. But it’s bounced right back up. And check out that Average CTR: 139%! Calculated just for July, its CTR is 148.5%! Mugs are thriving.Ranking 11th: t shirts, up from #417 We assumed “t shirts” was just another faux climber. Yes, it had to climb up from ranking #417 in June. But in June, “tshirt” (no space) ranked third and “t shirt” (singular) was in eighth place. And then there also was “tshirts,” 47th in June’s Top 50. Their respective ranks this past month: tshirt is now 41st; t shirt is No. 2, and tshirts is– oops! Nowhere to be found. So we checked on “tshirt” in Keyword Tool. And we ticked that “Include Near Matches” box to see stats for tshirt singular and plural combined.
Uh-oh. Together, their search trend line is way down. So next, we looked at the merged data for “t shirt” (with a space after “t”) singular and plural.
And it’s a different story! This pair doesn’t have the Trending Now banner that tshirt/s does. But it has just as fantastic an Average CTR: 137%. By itself, for just the month of July, “t shirts” has a CTR of 149%! And the July CTR for your No. 2 “t shirt” is 126%. Overall then, we’d say the outlook for this product appears to still be solid for you.And now, let’s move on to your more conspicuous July climbers.Ranking 7th: keycaps, up from #73 “Keycaps” has been making lists of top Etsy searches for several years now.
Those keywords stats are stellar! Average searches over 5,500/mo; Average CTR 111%; and best of all, that Etsy Competition figure! Only 378 Australian listings are using this keyword. If you’re here looking for a niche to get into, we think this one merits your consideration. Because unlike another Top 1000 frequent flyer “keychain,” keycaps have a higher “barrier to entry.” And that limits competition. It’s simple. Anyone with a pair of pliers and cheap doodads from a mass-market craft store can make keychains. They require minimal investment, time, or skill. But the lower those three metrics go, the higher seller competition climbs.Keycaps are the opposite. For example, resin artisan keycaps require a substantial investment in materials, tools and equipment. Then there’s the skill and time. Time to learn how to make them; time to hone that skill; time to actually make them. At minimum several hours; some types of resin need to cure 8-10 hours.Of course, they can be made of other materials: different forms of plastic, metal; clay; even wood. Polymer clay might be the most beginner-friendly. But all of them present enough of a barrier to entry to keep competition low. And prices for unique, fine-quality artisan keycaps can be high: hundreds of dollars; some even higher!Ranking 9th: wall decor, up from #252 “Wall art,” your current No. 1, is a Top 20 frequent flyer for all four of the countries we cover here. But this keyword, “wall decor,” we don’t see ranking as high as often.
In fact, let’s compare their data. Here’s “wall art.”
Wall art doesn’t take the low dives that wall decor does. Wall art has only dropped below 10,000 searches/mo once in the past 15 months. And wow: giant spike last year in October! Wonder if it will repeat? With both wall art and wall decor in your Top 10, there is considerable Australian shopper demand. And whether you are a maker, sell vintage, or create digital designs, you can get a piece of this. The only trouble is that pesky competition. So, what’s a new or small seller to do? Niche down.Quick tutorial: how to use Keyword Tool to “niche down” Are you new to online selling? “Niche down” is industry jargon for finding products and their keywords you can rank for in search. Keyword Tool can help! Enter your broad search term (in this case, “wall art”) into Keyword Tool. Then scroll down to the Keyword Ideas table. There, use filter and sort to find long-tail keywords. That is, the top Etsy searches with lowest competition. Once you find ones that fit your product best, these will be your “superstar” keywords. The ones you will focus on ranking for in search.Demo: finding superstar keywordsHere, we chose “Phrase” (circled in lime green) for the Keyword Match filter. This shows us keywords with both “wall” and “art.” Then, to see what’s trending currently, we sorted by the Search Trend column. (Just click the header, circled in yellow.)
And look at that! Third from the top, “metal wall art,” is used by only 3,239 listings! And this keyword would have been easy to dismiss if you’d just used the default sort (by Average Searches). Averaged over 12 months, “metal wall art” has only 229/mo. However, it got 2,250 searches in July; in fact, it ranks 70th in your Top 1000 now. However, that’s just a one-month spike. So, enticing as that competition figure is, we wouldn’t recommend acting on it just yet. Add it to a Keyword List; let that watch it for you awhile. See if it retains its shopper enthusiasm. Meanwhile, there are two other contenders with far better search history. “Christian wall art” and “bathroom wall art” both have excellent stats, although the latter does have moderate competition: 26,326 listings.Overall, “christian wall art” would be our pick of these. For five consecutive months searches exceeded 1,000/mo. It ranks #306 in your current Top 1000, with an Average CTR of 101%. And on Etsy, a 12-mo CTR above 100% is a powerful indication of purchase intent.
Tip! Are you new to online selling? Click-through rates (CTRs) reflect how often shoppers using a given keyword click on listings in their search results. We care about these because clicks are among the indicators that signal purchase intent. That is, a shopper who’s searching with the intention to purchase (as opposed to one just browsing).
Ranking 15th: halloweenAnother screamer! But of course Halloween is seasonal. On the other hand, Halloween is huge on Etsy, and it’s no different Down Under. It’s even up a bit Year on Year. And check out that Average CTR: 148%! Given that it’s a seasonal search, for a 12-mo average that’s fantastically high.Every type of Etsy seller can find a way to get a share of this. You’ll just have to niche down. And now you all know how. The steps we just outlined for “wall art” will work for any keyword.Ranking 17th: jewelry, up from #204This one surprised us. Not because it’s trending; rather, that it fell so low in June. So it’s off to Keyword Tool we go.
Indeed, June was a 15-mo low for “jewelry.” But this is another category that normally trends well with Australian Etsy shoppers. And given that 134% Average CTR: no worries. And jeepers, jewelry peaks early for your holiday shoppers: in October! Bet you’re already busy getting ready! So, we’ll leave you to it.As for us, we’re off to see what’s trending on Amazon and eBayAnd Amazon is sure to be interesting.
